One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

Loads of small tasks before I hit the road Monday.

Finally mounted the switch pro.

My dad pitched in and repacked the bearings. 10,000 of highway and a lot of dirt, and they were ready.

Trimmed the Reid knuckles to where I get the original 35ish degrees of turn back. I kept forgetting to do this.

Made up some rack mounts…

I’m borrowing the shade cover from a friend, and I bet it’ll come in handy. Also, I’m now 110% overlander.

No, that requires a roof tent of silly proportions.
My wife wants one. I’ll get okay with it.

All you need is a portable grille hitch receiver
Keith beat me to it on that one. Nothing quite as slick as cooking hotdogs and burgers at the top of yellow hill.

your truck gets me so excited and motivated to get mine back together.
Yours is going to be so nice when it’s all done. Enjoy the process.

David

Packed, stacked, and ready to go.

Ready to put a bunch of miles on this dude.

I hate putting on decals, but they did come out nice.

And who doesn’t pack a spare set of heads?

Safe travels. Despite the batwing 270 awning, I doubt most overlanders would be as forward-thinking to carry a spare pair of cylinder heads. Most would have had a mobile kitchen that slides out on that spot instead.

3 weeks out from my own adventure. I can't wait.

Ha! I’ll note this as setting a new trend.

I actually do want to make more room for actual camping/cooking gear, but just didn’t want to build in too many dedicated setups for this trip. I’ll see how I use what I’ve got, and take notes. That corner is where I see a Coleman stove and chuck box fitting quite nicely.

Also, one of the younger Watsons is taking delivery of these heads, and I’m getting work space back in the shop.

Much like you have revisions on your truck I find myself revising camp gear every trip. I take mental notes and make adjustments for the next trip. It’s taken a few but it’s pretty dialed in now.

Though my chuck box/pelican case is a mess that really needs some attention.

It is indeed cool and dry here in Raton.

It’s actually a fairly easy 10 hour stretch from Dallas. Best part is the fuel economy so far. Gaining elevation the whole way and bucking a headwind 1/3 of the time, the 6.5 is doing 14.5. That’s 2 and 3 better than the 6.2 ever did on this same leg. Pretty pleased with that.

Now, for a beer and emails.

David

If your route to ORD has you coming through Denver. The shop I work at is only a couple miles south of I-70.
