Just finished reading through the whole build. Very nice work throughout, and even better story. Hopefully we can meet up sometime at one of those hidden falls runs. I've always wanted to get out that way and wheel but don't have my blazer where I want it to be at. Keep up the good work!

Free-ninety-nine is a very nice price. Great score. I'd definitely go that road if I came across a smoking deal like that. Since we're building from scratch, a Garrett is more economical and has the widest array of adjustments.

Funny thing, I hope this turbo whistles like your 40. I want that soundtrack.

Hidden Falls is a great spot. It has a wide range of trails with great views, and your blazer would do just fine. I haven't been out to the new Katemcy K2, either. Really liked the old one with its wide open granite trails.

Great build David. I am a big fan of all the custom work you did on the core support. Great ingenuity!!

Pretty sure all the Duramax variants use an IHI turbo with later versions using the variable exhaust geometry. The Holsets are great for our engines because they're widely available as a takeout, and they are decently efficient at boost pressures below 20psi. The 12cm housing is what most folks pick as the compromise for low end response and top end EGT control.

The turbo shop is happy to build a 35/40 combination or an S300, but the parts bin for those is significantly smaller than Garrett, and geared very much toward the 30+psi type folks. As well, it's difficult to find compressor maps for Holsets or Switzer turbos - held back as trade secrets I guess. Garrett's are all out in the open, and for every compressor wheel (of which there are dozens), there are a few different trims to choose, each with it's own compressor map. We'll see where I end up.

Towing up a hill usually is a 3rd gear activity and the best balance of EGT and power has been at 2500-3000RPM. With that in mind, here are some measurements I've taken and duplicated several times, all at 2700RPM:
  • Exhaust pressure pre-turbo: 27psi
  • Boost pressure at turbo: 14psi
  • Boost pressure at manifold: 11.5psi
I haven't setup for temperature drop across the intercooler, yet, but the above is useful in specifying a turbo.

But next: time for these tires to see some dirt. I've got 400 miles in the intercooled and associated changes, and all is running well, so I'm headed to a local-ish spot in Bridgeport, TX for some basic 4wd exercise. I haven't wheeled the truck since December 2015.

I'm in the DFW as well and although I can't do it yet in the Jimmy I sure as heck don't mind slinging whatever comes out the back wheel with my DR650 and that isn't a crazy riding distance away. Maybe we can revisit on PM's sometime and exhchange some notes for future riding/offroading endeavors.

Because it's a requirement to get into several parks, both private and public. I want to wheel without driving 3 hrs, and I'm willing to pay $20 to do it for a year.

But, I reserve the right to whine about it.

Put my permit to good use. This was supposed to be just a light bit of trail running. Ended up accidentally running the 'no winch trail', aptly named because there are no winch points along its 200yard length of loose mid-size boulders. The 13 bolt still likes to grab a rock every now and then in an effort to halt forward progress.

It was just two of us, and we didn't get many photos. I prefer to just drive, and tend to forget documentation.

Need to pull out a leaf or two from the front and shim the rear. Then, more testing.

Aside from an iPhone and work laptop, I'm nearly a Luddite. It might be time for an upgrade, so I will look into this 'GoPro'.

It's a long drive to Canada. Let's compromise and meet in Moab next September.

Ok, it's like a camera...but it shoots MOVING pictures. Pictures that move with you. So you don't hafta remember to push the button every time you want a picture, you just let it record the whole day and then pick out the clips that you want to keep. :wink1: :haha:
