Project Camo Reaper - Brake lines made - post #144

Added longer brake lines to the front and got the axle truss welded back together.
Decided I had better wait on the new rear shackles before I weld on the spring perches. Kert said he was shipping out the rock rings and shackles today so it looks like it will stay on jackstands for another week.

Did a little sanding on the passenger side and got most of the base coat laid down for the desert camo paint. Had to quit because I'm doing this in the driveway and the wind was basically blowing the paint away from the truck. Will try again in the morning before it gets too windy
 
Got my order from Kert so I was able to finish the rear shackle flip, got the gas tank and skid plate back in and the rear set at the angle I need. Just need to weld on the spring perches, bolt it in and then weld on the mount for the anti-wrap bar. Was hoping to get that knowked out this weekend but they are calling for rain everyday.

Rock rings also came in so I need to weld those in too

List of other things to do:
Make rear brake hard line
measure for driveshafts & order
Flex suspension to measure for shocks - order - make shock mounts
Gather parts for hydro assist. Need 2wd box, lines & ram
 
Got 2 of the rock rings welded in today. Was almost finish grinding the welds when either my grinder overheated or it died. Depending on when the wife gets home tomorrow and if it's not raining, I will weld in the other 3 rock rings. Hopefully the grinder isn't trashed. I really don't want to buy another one when I still have a BIG shock order to make soon :doah:
 
Could go cheap for now and get a HF grinder till after shocks. I think dremu runs like 5 of them so he doesn't have to change wheels.
 
BIG............................this is gonna be good.

Yeah lots of grinding requires cool down. Progress is good, better than have done lately.
 
Good news / bad news
Good news: grinder still works..woohoo
Bad news: i was in such a hurry to start welding yesterday i neglected to put on a long sleeve shirt. Left arm got a nice welding burn. Now i know what that burnt hair smell was that i've been smelling all morning..haha

Today I plan to finish welding the other 3 rock rings in. I am going to do something different on these 3 though. The first 2 I welded all the way around. In hindsight that wasn't a great idea because if it fills up with mud behind there then there is no way for it to drain out. I think on the other 3 I will leave an inch or two between welds. As for the 2 already done, going to hit them with a cutoff wheel to open some drain holes.

Thoughts?

I may also wash out the tires today to make sure they are free of oil/grease since I plan to use Dyna Beads inside
 
No welding but did mount one of the tires. My wife was doing laundry and I needed to unplug the dryer to plug in the welder. Didn't want to interrupt her train of thought :D

Decided to 'borrow' the ram assist setup from the truggy since I won't be working on it until after Blazer Bash. I'll piece together another setup for that later..maybe full hydro
 
After work todat I am welding on my other 2 rock rings and the spring perches..finally.

Did some welding Saturday. Added 4 new D-rings to the side rails of the car trailer. The welds on the top side look great. The underneath welds not so much.
Is there a trick to mig welding upside down???

Thought I was done welding cause I had other stuff to do so I shut down the welder. Did my other stuff and decided to weld the spring perches onto the 14b..finally.
Since the welder was still in the driveway I turned it back on and got busy. I did it with the axle housing still under the Jimmy. The welds looked like they were getting decent penetration and it sounded like it was cooking bacon like it should. When I was all done and putting the welder away I noticed I forgot to turn the gas on :doah::doah:

I'm content with letting them be. They don't look so great but I'm over it. If they break then my bad and I'll cut them off and start over.

After that I started work on the wifes Miata. I've been putting off replacing the convertible top for months even thought we've had a new for since before X-mas. Got the old one off and the new one back on the frame. Just have to remount onto the car. I'll probably have about 5 hours into the job. Not terrible for a first timer
 
Not sure. I did kep the settings the same. Might have been too much heat that wayas it was dripping hot, molten metal onto the ground and splashing me..in my t-shirt..haha

Nah man... That's too much material, or moving too slow.
Material builds up, and stalagmites down, or drips.

It's the difference between NorCal_Chris' good welds,
and my chitty ones.... :haha:
 
Yeah, sounds right. I must be somewhere between you two. Great welds on top..****ty upside down :-)
 
Another piece out of the garage

Finally got the bumper and winch mounted. Still need to wire it but not today. It was 100*
