Project Penny - All good things must come to an end

Jealous!!! Next year I WILL be at Blazer bash!!

Are you still thinking of coming to AK next year?

I would absolutely love to!

That said, I've been invited to be part of a pit crew for a local buggy entering the King of the Hammers next year. I think that could be lots of fun too, and won't destroy all my vacation time in one go. I haven't said yes to no to the invite yet.

I may just help with the wiring this winter and forgo the trip down to the race if I am able to find a company that will ship my Tahoe up your way, and bring it back down here at a reasonable price. I have just enough vacation time to drive all the way up there, stay for 14 days and drive back, but I would be stuck at work solid for the rest of the year. If I luck out and get put onto a spring shutdown when I get back from school, then I may be able to bank enough OT to make the trip that way instead.

I guess we'll see how things work out!

well your more then welcome to store it at my place and I'm sure we can get loaded our unloaded for you.

Cool, good to know!

I may just have to build the K5 up a bit more and take it up there instead. Much better equipped for a bit of bogging, and I don't mind if it gets a bit beat up! Tahoe is much more comfortable, but I don't want to wreck it just yet

Well either one would be a good choice . if nothing else you can always fly in and ride with one off us.

Dude! Holy crap! I had never seen the "finished" pics of the Tahoe! Looks awesome! I want to do exactly what you did but with a suburban of the same era. Bad ass!

I know it has been a long time since I updated this, but I finally got my rear bumper from TAG the other day...

To tell the truth, I am actually quite pleased with it! The swing out carrier needs a few mods (sent me one with a 6 bolt pattern carrier and a single gas can carrier on it instead of the 8 bolt and dual gas can I ordered, doh!) but I really like the bearing assembly for the swing, latching assembly and over all fit and finish of the bumper. The install was a HUGE PITA due to some very tight clearances for installing the bolts in the brackets. Took me quite a few hours to get it in... Either way, it looks good, and while it was a bit late, I am happy with the purchase.

I still have plans to get hydro assist on the truck, and definitely need to do some work on the pinion angles to fix some driveline vibes. I also need to work on the front end a bit... The camber, castor and toe are all outta whack and cause the truck to handle a bit odd. It is driveable, but can be much better with a bit of work. I found that most of the bump steer is caused by the front axle moving around. I am going to install a track bar to keep the axle centered.

For the rear, I have decided to install a triangulated 4 link to replace the leaf springs. I'll get started on that in a few months.

I took the Tahoe out wheeling the other weekend but only got about 10 minutes into the run when my heater core let go. That was not a fun thing to replace! Have to take the whole dash out to get the HVAC stuff out just to get at three little screws along the back side of the cover. I did not re-install those screws on re-assembly. Next time the heater core will only take an hour or two to change instead of most of the day.

I'll get some pictures for you guys tomorrow when I have it out next :D

So, I took some nice pictures of my Tahoe today, but totally forgot the camera in the Tahoe, doh!

Here it one of the rear bumper that I took a while back on my cell phone though :D

Happy Cody?:haha:

So...

I am thinking about buying this thing... It has an LB7 6.6L duramax and a ZF6 6 speed manual transmission in it (with an NP261XHD floor shift t-case). 145k miles on the odometer. Runs like a top, shifts good. Nice and quiet.

Duramax swap into the Tahoe and a 6 speed swap for the daily driver? Maybe....

Either that, or a coil/link front suspension :D

I think the drivetrain would be a better bang for your buck. Have you really actually felt significantly limited by your leaf spring suspension? I suspect that most folks who want a coil/link front suspension just want it for coolness points. Certainly, there are folks who really need a suspension that performs that great, but a properly set up leaf spring suspension works great for the vast majority of us... and it's cheap! :D

Actually, I am more impressed with the leaf suspension offroad than anything! My biggest issue is that I have too much side to side movement in the suspension. My front and rear axles move side to side +-2 inches at least and cause all kinds of problems with steering, wandering, etc

There are bandaids for that on the cheap-ish for leaf spring suspensions. I still think you're better off to improve your drivetrain than your suspension.

Yeah, I am thinking I am just going to put track bars and sway bars in for the time being. My front axle is also bent, need to take it out and get it trued up, get the pinion rotated up, castor set properly etc. Most of my wandering issues are related to the alignment being all out of whack

so Russell, what happened with that 241 in Moab? Chain or something?
