Project "RESPAWN" - 1972 K5 Blazer

Cool stuff here!
Funny, just noticed that on this K5 for sale at 35k is the same way, http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5680617698.html looks like they either cut down a pickup door or used a repop. Do the drivers side doors normally rust out faster than the passenger side?

From what I've seen, both doors are rusted about the same as the others if they do rust out. Fun factoid, the blazer doors ARE cut down truck doors from the factory. The factory assembly manual gives you measurements on how to do it. Only difference is that latch plate and brass bumpers.

Maybe I'm only judging from CA trucks? Don't seem to be much rust on the doors here. The rockers and the footwell is another story though.

Probably depends on whether the drain holes are blocked with pine needles and leaves and dirt or not.

It seems like it's the same failure mode as you get in the fresh-air vent pockets.... wet crud collects, and packs in there and never dries out.

Makes sense. I can still go to pick n pull and find reasonably decent truck doors sometimes. Both my doors were about the same, little bit of rust in the back corner.

Holy giant mirror batman! I haven't seen one of those multipane rear view mirrors since like '93.

As far as rust on the doors goes, I'm betting it has to do with where it is parked too. After I cleaned up all the rust in mine I had to still park it outside for 10 years and the passenger side was toward the weather. I've got rust issues in several spots on the passenger side now while the drivers side is still good.

Haha I laughed at that mirror to, I bought a 68 Camaro back in the late 80's that had one of those stupid things... he is never going to get 35K for that thing unless he keeps it for another 20 years I guess.

I think I am going to rattle can the top white to make it a little more presentable for now... any suggestions on paint?

I like the rustoleum enamel stuff the comes in the tall can. Available home depot, lowe's, walmart, etc, and sprays at any angle. Not expensive and durable in my experience. Available in white!

Shall I assume you want "stock" white?

Duplicolor makes a perfect match for WA-5111 which is what I'd assume you want. It's the same "pure white" that is used on factory wheels.

I put the Duplicolor cross-reference numbers in the MAW thread..... but I'm going to make you search for those. It's somewhere between page 252 and page 309... :haha:

100PPP FTMFW!!!

You probably should seek out a larger can..... unless you want to buy 20 of these. :yikes:

And I just found in your build thread! lol

I like dupli color spray paint, they have a good nozzle that gives a real good fan pattern and if you take your time you can get a real nice paint job. Done several trucks that way. Other rattle cans just spray in a round crappy pattern that is hard to work with.

I never liked Dupli-Color paint much, but I've used it a few times to do touch ups..it matches pretty well, but the paint is always thin and runny, and smells gross..it also likes to lift old paints..

Some of the cans of it I had, were equipped with spray nozzles you could turn the little "jet" where the paint comes out,so you can have a horizontal or vertical spray pattern...which is useful and cool..but if one clogs,no other brand uses the same nozzles..I still have a dozen "half used" cans hanging around due to that...

Is this the brass bumper your talking about? The piece above the latch looks like stainless. Also a corresponding rubber bumper on the B pillar.

Pretty sure that is to keep the gap between the doors and b piller somewhat even while off road. I painted over mine but it gets rubbed off so I know it gets used to align the doors once it's latched and your rolling down the road.
