Second draft on the bed base on actual measurements.





The square tube back would end roughly 3-4 inches below the back window of the cab for height proportion. Sides are going to be 16in tall. I didnt model them in this because Im going to try to make separate pieces and get them swinging on hinges in solid works.
 
I like the bed idea, was actually thinking of building something similar on my 81 Toy. If you weren't so far I could ask you how many R150's you need as they're quite abundant here as well

Thanks. I actually started building it at work. Boss was way cool about it. Its getting all tig'd as practice. Im actually coming along with it. the square tube frame and back piece behind the bed is done and fully welded. I went with a stringer front to back instead of numerous side to side. Then Im gonna add a few lighter pieces in.

I tried to go get steel to build a fab table today but everything is shut down with the snow so Im actually going to go on solid works and make some revisions to my design. Im thinking about making the rear of the bed fixed and having a spare tire and cooler holder back there.
 
Not much exciting stuff going on. I had today off so I went and bought the remainder of the square tube for the bed and built a fab table to make the bed sides on because Im sick of back boning everything I make with tube to get it straight. I keep forgetting to snap a pic of whats done at work too.

This is the final revision for the bed. The back will be fixed with a spare tire, highlift and cooler mount. The sides will fold down.



I picked up weld on hinges and spring releases at the steel supply too.






Im going to try to cut the vertical pieces open on the gates and build the spring release into them. Now that the snow has melted off and its not a mud puddle at my shop anymore I should get a serious amount of fab going on this thing. Then ive just gotta pony up for drivetrain stuff.
 
Began tackling this dreaded task of latches tonight. Been really busy at work trying to wrap up bobbing this duece :D

So I decided I wanted the spring latches to not look/be a ****ty latch I just welded onto my side gates. So I took them apart and basically built them into the tube. The piece of tube shown is the side piece of the side gates for the bed. I needed to get these latches in them before building the actual sides so I could drill them in the press.





They're all trimmed down and fit for the gap that will be in the frame of the bed. I was going to build a cover plate for them but after seeing how well and basically fool proof it turned out I said screw it and decided I would weld the tube back shut.



Im just going to drill a small 1/8 hole in there so I can douche it with wd40 through the straw.
 
Finished up tig'ing the side gates at work the other day. Took them to the shop, put all the latches in, welded them holes back shut and ground them smooth. Now I've got to get the back wall on the bed and the gates swinging on it. I bought some steel door style hinges from Fazzios the local metal supplier the other day but I'm not sure if I'm going to use them. They're a little bit loose so I might have my boss walk me through spinning up something on the lathe.


I did finally get a lead on a front axle Im going to pick up tomorrow. That will donate its outers for the full floater conversion on the rear and the C's for a future high pinion build. Center section and 3.73s will probably get canned unless someone on here can use them.

I also spoke with someone about picking up a TBI 305 early next week for $100. Ive decided to just go this route exactly like was suggested earlier in this thread. The harness is there and can run the v8 and the stock 305 will have the same output as a hopped up 4.3 but w/o spending $1200 in parts on the 4.3. Im trying to do some of this budget w/o going was overboard TBH. I may even look into some other doubler options to save from having to spend $800 on adapters.

Brought the bed frame back to my shop from work. Still gotta put the rear wall on it but I wanted to get it over there so I can move on to making mounts. Also gotta shoot the back of my cab.





 
Well I got the square tube basically done on the bed and the doors thrown in place for effect. The bed is going to get mounted about 4in higher for tire clearance. That will put the top rail even with the back window. Im also going to do a notch in the tube for the tire.






Its slightly odd looking at the moment IMO, but I think the tube will really make it.
