Project Smoke Wagon

1984 GMC Jimmy 383 Stroker | SM466
Only thing I am seeing being difficult is lining the cross member up to be drilled to the frame.

Without some measurement I am guessing I’ll have to install everything sans cross member common to frame. Lift the trans/tc through the floor with my hoist. Bolt the trans up and mark out the holes on the frame rails drop the cross member Drill and reinstall cross member and remove hoist. This will be annoying and difficult as the legs of my hoist will be where I need to lay to drill the frame rails at least on one side. I got a big a** electric drill I use for this though so should do it quickly maybe stepping up the bit 2-3 times.

2 days and I will have the new trans and TC combo.

Need to get some kerosene for the garage for heat. Thinking of buying one of those harbor freight nibblers for the shifter hole. My hole saw set screw stripped out (cheap one I got years ago). Need to get that to cut the holes in the firewall. Also, need to grab some seam sealer.

it’s going to be hard for me to not scrape and clean the underside of the truck with the trans out. It’s too cold to really paint or do much here but it would be nice to clean that up while I have the room. Just worried the paint won’t stick from the cold. Maybe clean it up best I can and use rust converter and a top coat.

I think I pretty much have my plan set. Going to take measurements off the donor truck for the firewall holes. I plan to do a really great write up on this. Might even have my wife shoot video while I do it and post it up on YouTube.

Plan on removing front seats, mat, steering column, center console, and trans tunnel. Possibly even the door(s) to make access with the hoist even better. I will likely route the wiring for my speakers at this time as well and possibly prep the floor for a coat of roll on bed liner depending on its shape under the mat.

Would like to take the rubber mat to the car wash and pressure spray it clean. Make for a really clean reinstall.

Anyways, I am super excited to get this set up in the truck. Merry Christmas to all you out there and a Happy New Year!

T minus 16 hours until I get my manual swap set up.

Can you tell I am anxious? Might not even sleep tonight.

Won’t be posting much until later tomorrow night. Taking the wife out on a Christmas/shopping date tomorrow so won’t have any pics of the new set up till later in the evening.

I’m hoping to have this swap done by mid January but I am going back to never ending overtime starting on the 3rd. I’m hoping to have the old units out and the sm465 prepped to be placed in before I am back to work from Christmas vacation though.

I got busy and missed the best possible thread update ever! Damit!

hey @skunked look, it’s a #dumptrucktrans :haha:

I think long run it’s best
I bolted mine in a reverse fabbed the mounts. It’s a bit labor intensive but probably the easiest

as for the linkage, I have shorty headers, so there’s no interference

Im not sure what headers I have they are some eBay cheapys I imagine. They don’t seem like they will interfere. plenty of room across from the bell housing. So hopefully won’t have any issues there.

Yeah I don’t have any other forms of social media so this is kinda like my ‘Facebook’ if I had one lol lots of random posting from me, I know. #CK5diary. Doesn’t help because I am a bit neurotic.

You fit in well here

This is my only place too and plus one for the dump truck transmission.
I ran them for years and now all my Chevy trucks have automatic transmission but I am working on fixing this. I have a crew cab I will be building soon and I already have the nv4500/np241 ready for it.
Just need to get some pedals and figure out my cable setup

Mild discouragement.

found a repair done to the adapter years yonder. Couldn’t tell because of the amount of mud caked to the thing.

got a ton of it off though. I was kinda expecting this adapter to be shit out. I know they are the weak spot. I let the dude know, who sold it to me. See what he says. Hopefully he’ll be generous and toss me back a couple bucks. We’ll see.

Although.....this was in a running driving truck.....

what you guys think?

get a new adapter or Send it?

I honestly can’t tell if it was done as a preventative measure or to fix a crack. I don’t see why anyone would do that unless something broke though lol

that’s some old school farm welding right there haha

Clean ir super good and check for issues. Maybe give it a little extra if you can

I don’t see anywhere where the actual adapter is or was cracked which is super odd. It also leads me to believe they put so much weld in it that it never recracked....... kinda makes me want to send it. Lol

for sure. I’m going to have this thing clean and painted. I think I’ll grind down the welds and the excess hanging off see what it looks like.

Talked to dude.

He said he is sorry and that he doesn’t like to sell broken parts as it is his business. Both of us didn’t notice it. It was really hard to see.

I told him I’m looking for a crack and if it is cracked through he is going to make it right. Said even if I use this one he will give me another one when he picks one up. He has a graveyard of squares so that could be anytime really. I doubt you could find one in good shape really though.

He’s a good guy and I have faith he will make it right.

That's reasonable enough. Better than about 90 other responses

That 465 into a 208 should be more than capable

Forgot to snap a pic of the pedal assembly, bell housing, and linkages.

the only part I need in order to have the complete set up is the bracket on the frame that mounts the Z bar. He sent the truck to the wrecker before pulling it. I might just fab something up out of some angle steel though as it seems easy enough.

Pulled some pics offline of the part and I’ll only need to drill one hole in the floor which is really nice. Have the boot and everything for that as well.
