rattle can paint jobs...show em off!

Who was that guy that rolled his paint on and sanded it smooth with a D/A and then buffed it? I read that about 4-5 years ago, but can't remember other than it surprisingly came out good.

We used to roll on the cheapest sears house paint on our derby cars :haha: no DAing or sanding for us though :doah: :woot:

about 40 bucks worth of spray paint and 2 days to paint it. Well one day to paint it and another day to hand paint the 1000 little rivets on:doah:

More pics of the blonde on the dirt road!

I don't have any more of her on that dirt road, but I do have a few different ones of her in my other random spray painted vehicles.

In my 1988 V10 Suburban.

Her and another friend in the back of my 1978 Olds 88. The paint was rolled on this one, not sprayed on like the others.

The link to the Corvair paint job.... What is Mineral Spirits? Sounds like a fancy drink :)

it's a petroleum based solvent... available ANYWHERE... hardware stores, homo depot, etc...... it's a little on the thick side, kinda like a kerosene... usually used for reducing cheap non catalyzed enamels like Rustoleum, etc...

My dad did this one on the 1st Gen we've been working on. Still need to paint the hardtop.

When I first got it. It was had so much surface rust on it that it looked terrible. Went to a store they were having a close out sale on one color of paint, looked pretty good. 15 bucks later you have what you see here

Interesting pictures here. I think this would have been very interesting to show and to learn in order to really make things good on your paint job! Well done!:)

IMHO the best way to make a rattle can paint job look real nice is to not use rattle cans.

You can still use inexpensive paint but spray it through a gun, use automotive style paint that uses hardners etc.

I have used the tractor style paint before but we used hardner and reduced it some lasts pretty good and went down pretty good.

My orange actually takes alot of effort because you have to paint the truck twice. It has to be all white for the orange to look like that before you even start with the orange. I have finally found an orange I like that is really close to mine so hopefully next year or two I will do a bit of work and spray it with real paint not just rattle cans

Rattle cans certainly do have their place though.

If you are going to rattle can it best advice I can give is pick up one of the handle thingys so you just have to pull a trigger.

For those who have never rattled canned before, here is some tips. IF you spent some extra time, you could come up with a good paint job.

1) If you spray outside, dont do it on windy days or cold days

2) Try to buy all your paint at one time from the same LOT # from manufactor, since your not mixing your own, this will give you the best consistancey

3) Paint it all at once. It seems paint doesnt match up if you do part of it one day and the rest another.

4) Do light coats back and forth and go about 6-8" Past your panels so you dont build up an "edge" .

5) The color of your primer will effect how your top coat turns out, especially if your topcoat is a light color. I used a Black Primer to get my Blue darker, my truck is actually T155 / Light Blue from advanced auto.

6) Mask the crap out of everything, cuz the paint will get everywhere, especially over spray.
