Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

yeah, I'll pull the shaft and spy it in the morn... that bearing was freakin toast, had like a 1/4" of slop in it...

well, got the old one off, and yes, it was pressed.... nothing a vise, some fire, a cold chisel and 3lb mini sledge wouldn't take of... I'll ride down to the shop in the morn to press the new one on...

sheesh, what a vacation.... :doah: :haha:

After watching the build these past days, I started planning on taking a week vacation next month to knock out the body work in the rear of my K5.

Then again... maybe I'll take a "real" vacation :-)

I'm committed to going back to taking an actual vacay next yr.. all my fishing/golfing buddies keep buggin me, this'll be the 5th yr in a row I've missed... next yr this time, I'm there... as a matter of fact, they left today for the fishing trip...

sweet, good reminder, doing that order next week.. all the door stuff, grill and a coughduckcough....

well, no need for "the odd guy carrying a driveshaft on his bike moment", a foot long piece of 2" DOM, mini sledge, easy peezy...

back shocks and brake line in the morn, some odds and ends and touchups and it will have been a successful, albeit challenging week, ummm vacation.. :haha:

little more paint, a badarse tubebed and a kennel and I'm golden! :haha:

I know everyone really wants to see me on the tubebed, but as you guys know, it's gonna be a huge amount of work, all-consuming project... it may take 3 or 4 months for the bulk fab... with additional projects down the road like the winch, gooseneck, toolboxes...

so I REALLY wanted to get this done first going into winter... which Gus reminded me of, need to see what I need to get the front shaft in this thing before we start getting weather.....

also, having the bed/winch plate being built with the suspension in place I think will work better than vice versa...

on that note... being an insomniac, here's a build note...

I figure the way I'm gonna need to do the bed thru the winter while DD Mutt is gonna be to.....

1 - prefab tube bed mount angle iron prior to weekend... also short tube "feet" to weld to em and rear x-member/winch mount material..

2 - pull bed. drill and install angle iron.. tack feet.. fab and tack rear x-member..

3 - do initial outer tube bends... slug/roset outer perimeter and tack to feet...

4 - remove.. reinstall bed... drive...

5 - continue main tube fab, C-hoop, angles, etc and final x-member welding in Dungeon open bay...

6 - periodically reinstall as needed

rinse, repeat...

26 - new fuel tank

31 - Kert's gooseneck box

42 - template, cut and fit 1/4" alum plate using panel mount tabs...

83 - zombie apocolypse... :zombie18: :zombie19: :zombie15: :zombie3: :zombie17: :zombie18:

Here I am thinking that welding seat belt mounts to the rollcage, finishing up the LS ECM wiring, and changing some bulbs was a lot of work for tomorrow :-)

You have a LOT of work ahead of you.

Do ya think that you could make a full size jig for the rear frame rails, maybe out of wood or steel? That way you could build the entire thing in the extra bay without needing to flip flop the wood bed around? Gonna be getting cold in your neck of the woods. Closed garage doors are pretty neat that time of year IIRC..

just a thought... ;)

eh, good thought... but I'll be much more comfortable doing an initial perimeter tube/mount gig on the truck.....

I'll do as much fabbing inside as I can..... but at some point logistics takes over.... the main lower tube area, that'll be finish welded to the mounts, etc in the garage, will start to get unwieldy and heavy... so it'll have to go on permanently at some point, than tubes cut in the garage, fitted and welded outside...

if i had our giant boat forklift on call at home, i could pull it off and on no prob.. that's how it'll haver to be done down the road if it needs to come off, at the marina with the fork...

anyway, thanks for the idea... :D

well, she's working amazing so far... steering is incredible and she rides like a $2 ho in a Caddy.... :pimp:
