Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

eh, I think it'll be pretty tame compared to a bunch I've seen in here....

3 x 4 isn't overly huge.. but it'll take up a fair amount of room in the LAB™, fo sure...

I'm guessing, it'll probably be like 325 to 350 lb's or something done up with the vise and drawers... guessing... I don't know, could be 400...

now if it was 4 x 8? yeah, than it would be stooopid heavy! :haha:

Ryoken - getting a headache hunting casters... :doah:

boy, steel prices really seem to have dropped... $137 for that 4' x 4' of 3/8.... not bad...

it's around 30 miles.. about a 35, 40 minute ride up the parkway..

I used to get better deals from my welder bud who was about 10 miles away.. but he retired...

You know...occasionally I wish I did live in a more urban area...only occasionally though:haha:

St. Louis being 2hrs away, Chicago being like 6hrs, Louisville being 4 hrs....not many big metal retailers around here. Just the small local weld shops and such. Same goes for other kind of go fast/4x4 parts places.

On the welding table, thought I'd put this here while I was thinking of it. Offset the shelf about 1" or so to one side with hinges at all four corners. Mount the shelf to a piece of tube between each pair of legs with a piece inside that so it can extend and retract slightly as the legs extend. Then you raise one side with a host/jack, pin it, then raise the other end and the shelf will adjust.

it's not a bad ride, all highway... Fazio is THE distributor for mid/south joysey pretty much.. they also have a place in Pottsville, PA and New Castle, DE.. but they DON'T do tube...

I'm sure there's a couple still in north jersey in the heart of the poo still... but than your talking 1 1/2 hr's or so into congestion/ghetto he!! of the likes of Newark/Elizabeth, etc....

we don't have sh*t for truck places or speed shops anymore.. THE only place around is Monmouth Truck Equipment... they bring the ghey.... it's all about moto metals and circle jerks...

ingenious.... logged in the cranium... :waytogo:

Kind of a derail but I was afraid if I didn't get it in writing I'd forget it.

nah, it's fine, I brought it up... we'll be back on track big time after Friday... :pimp: :woot:

fab table... just thinking out loud here... when I go to build it, I'll start a thread in the Tool Shed..

I'm thinking something like this.... should give me a range from about 28" to 40"

weld_zps1dd5612d.jpg

probably a dumb suggestion, but could you rig bottle jacks or pulleys and a come-a-long to lift the table and then pin it in place?

I don't think it's gonna be needed.. I think a floorjack is gonna work great.. way more convenient than anything else... and it may very well stay in one position for long periods of time..

funny thing is...been hunting welding table pics for a few hr's, saving them to a folder for ideas.. some I like.. like putting a receiver tube under the top.. than you can just make up different fixtures real quick out of 2 x 2 for different holding, etc..

one thing I definitely want is to have the legs, and substructure in like 4" from the edge... I'm huge on clamping sh*t to edges for grinding, etc... don't want a thick perimeter to it..

but I've yet to see one with adjustable legs.. adjustable feet yes, but not height more than than an inch or 2..

and I definitely want 4 swivel casters, locks on 2... so it's very mobile, it'll need to be moved often..

here's the casters I'm thinking of running..

Paul I can probably get you tube now from work if it coincides with a pickup we do. Also your making me want to cut down my wooden bench and build a welding table for the personal shop... Its so nice to have a legit place to weld at work.

I would want to incorporate some slide in tubes to strap an axle down too also for narrowing and bracket work

What if you hung a tube or bar down from the center of the top, through a hole in the center of the shelf, to just the height to slide your floor jack under.

Slide it under, lift enough to get the pressure off, pull the pins and crank it up. You aught to be able to get the balance close enough to move it up and down fairly easily.

right.. you could have vertical receivers too for jig's, V stands for an axle, etc..

just worried about the basics for it now... don't even have a decent vise for it.. wouldn't waste my time mounting the busted one from the workbench to it...

it looks like I wont be getting the table materials till next week.. looking like I'm only gonna have enough coin on Friday to get all the truck stuff.. but that's a TON of work.. mounting tabs, 8 under supports, etc... should keep me busy till march easy...

gotta get Kert on that mounting tab order soon too, gonna need them in a couple weeks.. can't afford it till next week either...

I think the jack will work great.. I'm gonna have a 2 x 2 between the legs at each end.. pump, pump.. do one end, than the other.. stable..

my biggest dread at this point will be drilling all those leg holes for the pins! drill press'll be getting a workout... gonna totally fab the leg's prior to putting any of that sub structure on the plate..

How do you know when you are getting quality casters these days? Last few I have bought fell apart and the bearings went everywhere....

may be these? http://www.hamiltoncaster.com/Heavy_Duty_Casters

ugh... was giving myself a friggin headache looking at them things, musta spent an hr looking thru McBible..... some of em are freakin spendy.... I want to keep the total height at 6" or less...

really don't want to spend a fortune on em.. I mean I'm not gonna go buy the cr@p horrible freight sells, but I don't want to spend $50 a caster either...

$75 total tops.. I'd be happier with $50 or less tho..

I can always change them too at a later date if they esplode...

cool site tho, I'll look thru there tomorrow.. thanks! :waytogo:

used some hf castors on bretts fab table. They roll fantastic. I think they were $25 a piece.

The table is heavy as hell, put any kind of side force on it, and it rolls..

Gonna do some type of leveler system to make it immobile.

cheapest thing they have in a swivel with brakes is about $60 a piece.. but they get WAY more than that if ya put a fancy wheel on it... not a lot of models have brakes available either.. it's high end stuff tho...

yeah, I've used horrible freights before.. they blew up after a couple years.. the only thing they have in a size I want, with a lock, is a light duty thing... I'd rather get the eghey ones..

I was originally gonna do the whole, leveling pads, wheels slighty higher outside for moving if you pick an end up type deal.. and said fug it, quick mobility is more important.. I'm sure I could come up with some outrigger feet deal, but it's not that important to me.. the table will be level, and my floor is pretty level.. good enough...
