Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

I think those latches loo on pretty good. Fits the truck well. Only thing is is that the front one looks crooked, could just be the angle of the picture too.

I just didn't bother straightening it when I snugged up the back nut, being it has to come apart for burnishing...... the holes allow for a little bit of wiggle room...

Looks great! You don't think you could get away with a single latch? Two latches and two locks seems like a PITA. But looks awesome.

thanks... with the width of the panels, I felt 2 was better looking/more proportionate, and much more secure in it's actual closing...

they all have locks cuz I had to get all 10 with locks to get a deal... for the most part, I'll just lock one on each door at night..... you don't need to "unlock" em every time you open it..

but it'll be nice to have that added security if I think I need it, considering 1 or 2 of the drawers could have thousands in Snappy tools in em...

30k, I would build another in a heart beat, well I would just sell that one and buy another one with a 6bt already in it.

pffft, I'm talking building a bed for 25, 30 g's.. not the whole rig.... :haha:

I know this goes against the sites "valuing of rigs", but I wouldn't take 30 g's for Mutt.. even with the gas motor.. my time/effort is more valuable than that.. 5 to 600 hr's of my labor at $50 an hr in the bed alone, do the math...

a 6BT install ain't d*ck compared to the effort going into that tubebed IMO..

I think I might hold off on the front corners till you get the bottom box. Everything is nicely integrated but those bottom boxes always look like add ons. Would be nice to do as much as possible to make them look integrated and that front corner will be key in that I think

they are going to be the same construction as the rest of the rig.... framed in the 1.5 tube with mitered corners, and all the panels will be the 1/4" alum set 1/2way in...

Look real good as always.
Enjoy see your progress.
I understand the time verses money thing that most just don't get when someone make an offer for with you have built.

thanks bud... :D

oh, I'm sure the haters of what I build would sit there saying "I wouldn't give you 5 grand for the rig, the bed is stoopid, it doesn't have hubcaps, yada, whine."

this whole subject is really based on what I think the minimum kinda coin I'd have to charge to duplicate the bed would be... and whether people will/do spend that kinda coin..

which I'm pretty sure happens all the time... the tool drawer company I used builds all kinds of crazy service bed deals for joe contractor with a new work truck... I bet they run serious coin..

it's all hypothetical, cuz as I've said, I have ZERO desire to do/sell fab work for other people..

I also have zero desire to see another bed similar to it... my brain pic is mine, not something I wanna see sold at Pep Boy's...

Exactly

oh... and what does everyone think of my latch choice? :ears:

I think the look is spot on IMO...

I think they look super!

I like the ones on my box...but yours are cooler with the hidden fasteners. :thumb:

thanks.. :D

I think the paddle latches where definitely the way to go..... those are actually medium sized.. with the panel height, the larges would have looked stoopid...

1 down, 3 to go...... slutfest ensuing....

here's a few without the drawer in to show the sick slides and the mounting, 3/8 button heads

to Kert's panel mounts.... 1/4" spacers... all that will be hidden by the hangin boxes and underskin...

here you can see the hinge setup...

you can also see in this shot why I'm going to put a top on the units when I have dividers put in... note the 1.75" space above the open top drawer...

Nice work on the truck! So much want. On a side note, I just found the visors I never shipped. Shoot me a p.m if you still want them.

thanks boys...

hopefully the others will go quicker now that I've done one.... hopefully I can bang em out and get to the doghouse soon.. kinda anxious to get to some serious alum welding/fab with that project.....

I didn't think you would leave it like that. :D was more wondering if I was seeing it right.

Setup looks bad as with the drawer in it! Truck just keeps getting better and better.

thanks fellas.... :D

can't wait to get the other one on that side done!

So tell us the truth - did you stick something in there this morning just because you could ;) ?

ow! quit it!

ow! quit it!

ow! quit it!

:haha:

nah, it'll be awhile before I actually start using them.... the goal is to be having the fuel tank made, and thus, the drawers modded in aug sometime... once that work is done, I'll be setting them up with the liners, magnet, etc and begin outfitting them right away...

next on the Mutt purchase list when I can ride out to Fazzio's (mon thru fri is tough for me) to get hopefully one last 4' x 8' of 1/4" for the doghouse pieces and lower box walls..

One thing I didn't see any mention of it and you may have thought about this. The drawer covers ( not sure what to call em) the aluminium with the latches and hinge on it. Might be a good idea to have a limiter on that. I realize the tube probably stops em just fine. And since it's hard to see its hard to tell if you actually need it or not. Might help to keep stuff off the paint on the tube too

Also I dig the latches. Here is another reason 2 is better than one. Wind. I built some side boxes out of steel a while back. Put one latch on em. At certain speeds with certain crosswinds the wind would try to open the box. 2 latches solved the problem. That and we put some 1/8 rod around the edges to stiffen up the outer cover

for now using the tube as a stop seems to work pretty good... it is laying on the tube in those pics... it was kinda dumb luck that they seem to open just about a perfect amount... plenty for the drawer to clear, but not excessively hanging...

if it starts to become a wear issue or something, yeah, I'm sure I could come up with something so they sat an inch higher at the end or something to keep off the tubes...

good eye.. :waytogo:
