Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

x-mas K5 time seems a LONG ways off.. and I suppose that's good thing... not sure how much coin I'll have left in the offseason for the K5.. but that's the plan...

if I can do that schedule I'll be impressed.. as usual, it's always more a mullah thing, than labor/motivation.. the tentative plan at this point is after the kennel build next spring/summer I'll be able to throw all coin at the K5 next summer/fall/winter for the joy.... I can hope anyway... :doah: :haha:

still waiting on Mig tips, sanding belts and the other door.. but most of the hardware is here and the most important parts, the fills are here...

the green dizzle caps came free with the necks... i'll throw em in the parts bin and put on some black gas ones till I do 6BT......

looks like the recess boxes will be about 2.5" deep or so... If I can have all the alum welding/fitting done this weekend, happy, joy, joy...

Will those filler necks take the larger diesel nozzles? I don't mean the ones that are ~1/8" bigger than regular 3/4“ gas nozzles like some of the diesel cars use, I'm talking about the ~1 1/2“ truck nozzles. The smaller nozzles suck balls whereas the bigger ones will fill my truck's 36 gallon tank up in maybe 3 minutes.

Hey Paul,

Now that you have the spool gun and the ability to weld aluminum in the Lab(TM), have you given any thought to trying to build the full tank yourself?

$2000 is a lot of cheddar to give someone else.... I can't help thinking that with a little more aluminum welding experience, you could build a leak-free tank by yourself and put that money back in your pocket. :waytogo:

nope.. sorry, no intention.. knew I would farm this one out..

and I'm guessing the tank will be 1000 to 1200.. than another 800 or so for the drawer work..

the recess has about a 5 degree angle to the fill face..

on to box #2.. I'll burn em in after both are made and fitted... the top lid is made too...

Yep...I really like that. :waytogo:

What can you hide in the doghouse? Secret compartment....pistols with no serial numbers...you are in Joizy after all...:haha:

thanks guys! :D

I think it turned out pretty trick....

both boxes are ready to be burned in... change of plans for the gas neck mounting.. since I want to run 6 around the perimeter.. 1/4 is just too large on the countersink side.. 1/2 of it will be under the cap.. it'll look goofy... and overkill..

I'm gonna drop that down to 6 10-32's.. but I'll have to order them this week..

but hopefully I can have the doghouse somewhat thru fully burnished by the end of the day tomorrow and bolted back on with 1 door mounted.... and the top lid, gasketed and bolted up.. (summit says i'll have the other door tues)

I'll have to come back in and mount the necks next weekend... also, only 6 out of 10 gas door bolts will be black for now.. 4 will be ss till next weekend when I get shorter ones in from McBible.....

schtuff morrow..

Actually, I'm probably being dumb, but how to you open them? I don't see anything to grab.

Why did I think those were gonna be locking doors? Or did they end up costing too much?

it was asked.. I didn't want locking.. they where available at the same price... didn't want that 80's cheesy locking gas door look.. if I feel it's an issue, I could put a locking cap on...

push in, spring loaded pops out... magnetic latch... vid tonight hopefully...

late lunch.. killed fab all day... just trying to get it sanded, burnished out now and back on the rig...

How far's the reach to the filler? Can you get to it flat footed from the ground?

I'm 6'.. I have to be on my toes to undo the cap, but I can pump flatfooted... obviously if I go up in the bed I can sit and do it....

Mutt got a bath this evening........ :pimp:

eventually.... :haha:

it's creeping up the priority list...

gonna try to sneak it in by the end of the summer.. I have the materials... just need to dedicate a long weekend to do it.. oh, and I want the new roof lights prior to that weekend...

but to be honest, if I don't get to it cuz I'm busy fabbing the lower boxes? well, it can wait till next summer... you guys know, but the majority of society doesn't even realize it's fugly up there....

finishing the tubebed fab takes priority... :saweet: that way I'll be able to start on the dual bat setup and get the winch in, etc...
