Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

We use quite a bit of the Magnum Magnetics stuff. That eBay price is about the same as my cost on it from our vendors. Only advantage being I can get just a foot if that's all we need.

they looked to be a good reputable manny from my cursory research... just gotta work on foam now........

picked up consumables this morn (man i can't afford that chit these days... 2 rolls of DA paper, scuffpads and contact tips.. $100)

working on getting box #2 enclosed....

Did you see this offer?

$10 shipped for assorted 10 pack of flap disks.

Wasn’t it you raving about this brand?

Drawers look great!

thanks man, it's fun to be working...

don't think I know that brand... that's a smoking deal... I need to re-up sooooooo much stuff in the LAB™.... but I need to pick and choose were the funding goes these days...

Good to know. So, that is a good quality product in the Ebay ad?
Yeah, seems to be good stuff. Several of our vendors sell it.

Only problem we ever had was a guy that left them on his car over winter. When he went to remove them they were stuck like they were a sticker. He had to use a heat gun and plastic scraper to get them off. So lesson is, if you are buying magnetic signs use them like they're intended and take them off from time to time. We advise people to wax the back of them to help protect the paint.

That sign magnet stuff is 30 mil. That should be plenty. Feel the difference between the 1 mil trash bags the 3 mil contractors bags. That sign stuff is 10x thicker.

good "Ryoken brain visualization" there.. ;) I get that.. :haha:

I think combined with the foam keeping them in contact with it, will make it a good system... need to get that sh*t up and running..

for the record... as was alluded to.. ;)

what annoys me the most about the drawer "resto" project I'm dealing with now is, and it's more the stooooopid amounts of metal resto I'm doing, than the $250 in sliders.. is that not only did I know it was gonna happen, more importantly, if I had spent about 2 hr's making up a few spacers, I could have left the folddown doors in place to still look "complete"... and removed the drawers, keeping them mint in the LAB™ till I could box em in...

my only excuse to myself is that I had been pounding stoopid amounts of hr's installing all new running gear/suspension AND building the bed all winter.. than got it installed... ready to run jeep taillights? nope, do the curved panels, etc, etc.. i was REALLY pushing it for what i could get done.. WAY ahead of where I thought I would be... but driving it around without the folddown doors, being all open and goofy, was driving me cwazy...

by that time, I was spent.. drive, and be happy... :pimp:

pic in the brain thing? :dunno:  :doah: :haha: :saweet:

I'm just wondering how long it's going to take you to polish all that aluminum.

I know you probably weren't going to do it, but now that I have you thinking about it. . . . . . .

nah, no polish.. i wouldn't do the top no matter what.. i dig the burnished look.. the undersides it would have strictly been for a durabilty, cleaning capability... but after reading that the Sharkhide sometimes gives polished alum a bit of a freaky rainbow hue deal, i decided against it.. i 'm pretty sure i'm gonna get a REALLY good look over the scuffpadded AL... it's the kind of product that will need a new application every 3 to 5 yr's depending on abuse (meaning the bellypans), but if i stay on it, it should stay nice... works amazing on tuna towers...

i also feel like the etch will help it apply/bond nicely..

I'm gonna wait till all the box work is done before i coat.. but i think i may only do 3 boxes now.. save the NIB one for once i get the tank done and can do the dual bat box... once i finish the 3 drawers, it should be decent enough outside to get going on the bellypans... even that is a bit up in the air on pass side.. i'm definitely gonna do the ds to finish.. but twithout the front bat box on the ps, i won't be able to fully do a belly.. but that would be ok.. I'm fine with the boxes with just tops. tho the exteriors will be subjected without the belly....

Any concern about the magnet pulling up and messing up what's left in the drawer when grab something out of it?

sorry, posted the wrong link.. they sell the same stuff with an adhesive back..

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Flexible-R...614217?hash=item4d69dda149:g:fV0AAOSwrklVEJko

i saw they actually have 60 mil adhesive backed, but it's only in 8.5 x 11" sheets on ebay.....

and magnum does make the same adhesive backed, but i don't see it on eghey.. maybe i'll drop em an email... they actually make it in 60 mil too... but i bet that's $150, 200 a roll...

box 2 done.....

hopefully box #3 will be done by sat morn... I've got a good system down now.. well, the exteriors on all 3 still need the 220 wet work, but the fab work should be done this weekend.. including the 3rd divider set hopefully...

hopefully the weather is cooperative at the end of the month, as i want to get to the ds belly pan work outside... I'd love to have the 2 belly's on the ds done before i start driving the rig around again in the spring.. it needs the main one over the tires, that runs back to the mudflap.....

but I'd also like to do a small, triangular one for behind the flaps, keep any possible sh*t out of the lights, and give it a clean look when I back over your Prius........ ;)

found, and ordering this next week hopefully.. 60 mil thick (they say thats 2 dimes), outdoor adhesive...

http://www.magnetking.com/store/pee...roll-006-peel-n-stick-outdoor-adhesive-magnet

that'll pretty much do all 4 drawers if i want.. i think i may do all 4, than in the one with no dividers, put some indoor/outdoor over the top of it for now ...

all the alum fab work is done for now.. now it's just a week of non-stop wetsanding... :doah: I'll be so glad when these things are coated, assembled and reinstalled... :pimp:

maybe I'll do some pics tomorrow...

Something else you could try is the foam mat that links together, commonly sold as anti-fatigue mat or play area padding.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Norsk-M...Flooring-Recyclamat-4-Pieces-240247/204318886

It's almost 1/2" think and made w/ a light weight closed cell foam. It cuts very easily w/ a utility knife or razor blade. It's even cheap enough that you could stack 3 or 4 layers. Put in a solid bottom layer. Then glue on a few more layers w/ holes cut out to fit your tools. It's easily glued w/ contact cement or spray adhesive.

The Dodge's back seats fold up and it has a corrugated metal deck that folds out. I've always left the seats up and deck out for the dog, but she was never stable or comfortable on the bare metal. I used a commercial grade fuzzy rubber floor mat trimmed to fie for years. It was good for the dog's traction but wasn't comfortable for her to lay on. I tried these mats under the fuzzy mat and they worked great. The dog spent years on them. They showed no wear and never became hard or brittle.

IIRC, I recommended them about a million posts ago in this thread to use for Kai's enclosure in the back of the truck.

i have some of those at work that i use to kneel on when working on the boats...

one box setup, thru one coat of Sharkhide... think I'm just gonna do 2, but i can do as many as i want for added protection...

here's probably the most visible part (once the doors are open)... the front of the drawer...

probably about 8 hr's of DA-ing and wetsanding there...

mom always said I was special..... :screwy:

:doah: :haha:

Those look super nice.

I don't have the patience to do anything like that so it's cool to see the results of it in your truck.

thanks...

trust me, if i felt I had another avenue, I'd rather not be sanding my fingerprints off... ;)

there's been eleventy thousand times that I've pondered how awesome it would be to have a giant burnishing planer doohickey to feed a flat panel thru, and have it come out with that paralel cut look..:haha:

it's something this whole tubebed project was destined for with the alum.. a gazillion hr's of wetsanding.. :woot: :doah: :yikes: :pimp: and deep down, i knew it before I started it... paints for pussies.... :ignore: :haha:

hopefully once these drawer assemblies go back in, they won't come out for a long time.. and will stay looking good... the roadsalt did a number on the drawer bottoms... even with machine 80, i had to leave a bit of the pitting here and there.. not a big as it's gonna have magnet glued on it... but it showed me how vulnerable the raw alum was... I'm really stoked to be getting the undersides done, and protected...

albeit slowly.. :doah:

A fab shop I work with a lot has this machine called a time saver that sands sheets of steel/AL but not nearly as nice as what you are doing.

hmmmmmmm.... if it came to it..... https://www.homedepot.com/p/Future-Foam-3-in-Thick-Multi-Purpose-Foam-10030BULK3/203837114?cm_mmc=Shopping|THD|G|0|G-Pro-PLA|&gclid=Cj0KCQiAkZHTBRCBARIsAMbXLhHP4KFwTqqPfx7XTMa3YhDu24kMb4tbnLUp53a0ZX0nuzR8Ay--Z2AaAszfEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CIbJtduc6tgCFU4DNwodb6sJmQ

I'd like black... need to stop and check some of stores over on 37 and see if they use any for packing...... I'm not sure if i want that mushy, couch cushiony kinda piece.. or more of that stiffer, shiney packing stuff..... kinda like this stuff.. this is layered, cuz it's a cutout stereo packing, but i think they sell this stuff in thicker than the 1/4" here... but you get the idea..

I just have ZERO clue what each are called, EVA vs polyethelene vs butyl buna vs hooka knee pads....

cuz than i could actually try to source the right product in black, and larger hunks... i know i've seen the pictured in black before..
