not sure how those will be for snugness.. not sure how "oversized" you could make them, and still get them in and out easy... as opposed to mush foam, which you could definitely compress it good side to side.. i'm gonna cut that white stuff, which i'm thinking is similar to what you posted in it's mushyness and see how it fits..

i'm thinking bottom layer of black magnet.. than maybe a cutout orange foam to match Mutt somewhat.... than the top cover foam would be black.....

maybe down the road.. i can upgrade from just magnet and foam when i really dial in what i want tool-wise in the rig....

actually, I would buy this stuff in orange/black... do it like this, but cut the bottom colored layer out to expose the black magnet. so it would be black when you look in the drawer for the most part, but you would get that halo of orange effect in empty spots... than a black top layer...

I'd like black... need to stop and check some of stores over on 37 and see if they use any for packing...... I'm not sure if i want that mushy, couch cushiony kinda piece.. or more of that stiffer, shiney packing stuff..... kinda like this stuff.. this is layered, cuz it's a cutout stereo packing, but i think they sell this stuff in thicker than the 1/4" here... but you get the idea..

I just have ZERO clue what each are called, EVA vs polyethelene vs butyl buna vs hooka knee pads....

cuz than i could actually try to source the right product in black, and larger hunks... i know i've seen the pictured in black before..

I bought that Home Depot foam today. For a cushion. They did have some black stuff that was squishy too, but not good for holding tools imho. Mainly because it would tear up too quickly if being handled and honestly would be a shame to put in what you are creating.

i think i need a cheap go between... the magnet, combined with something to hold them down somewhat will be the way till i go for a cutout.. and really, a sick cutout for tools app will probably end up being 3 drawers... as it doesn't utilize the space as well.. but i will have this up and running to some extent this summer.. tool cases, etc...
i'd love to just order some sheets of that orange and black and do it killa right off the bat... that's kinda how I roll....

but my brain (and wallet) overrides my impetuousness ($8 word 0' day ) on this one.. baby steps...

which is why a temp use of mushy foam may be the smart route till I iron out what the rig needs.... keep in mind, my initial thought for this was that the drawer space is VERY limited to carry all the tool groups.. which is why the "pile all the screwdrivers in one cubby, and mush foam for transport" idea-r was derived..

the foam most likely wouldn't be reused in the final cutout deal... but i have to see if the cutout is even a good idea.. no matter how neat looking, function over form..

working on that divider today, trying to get it into sharkhide.. i really should be outside yesterday and today starting the bellypan deal with the 50+ degree days.. throw in hatin on the wet 220 work.. but I'm waiting on panel mounts for that deal anyway...

If you're gonna use that foam, you're going to want something to keep your tools from bouncing up and out of it. Hit a pothole, driveway ect it's just going to bump them all up like shake and bake.

Yeah, I understand the temp use of the mushy stuff. The HD I just went to had 3 options. 24"'x24"x2" foam that was super soft (like soft for your head) at $6 a square. Foam that was a little more firm that was 24"x72"x3" at $25 and then that same dimension in black but there was no price tag visible on those and the black seemed a little more firm, but that may have just been in my head.

Why not do a combo of all the above. Magnet for the base, foam for the sides, stuff for tool boxes to hold sockets, wrenches etc. for the middle. That way if your needs change the foam doesn't need to be re-cut.

IMO I would just use individual slotted bags for the wrenches, and ratchets. Tool tray socket holders for sockets, the locking kind that you have to twist the socket to get it off. Then bags for the other misc. tools.

that may be a good way to approach it to start... the "loose" tool aspect of it all, is one that I'll approach slowly, just for the rattle effect of it all... i certainly have a ton of bags, racks, holders, boxes, etc to experiment and figure out the best plan... just need to get it up and running to some extent and mod from there...

that firmer black stuff is what i want to check out... can't say that's a section of depot that I've spent any time in...

the foam is to go on top of the tools and keep them from bouncing up and in contact with the magnet as best as possible...

not only did the alum and sliders take a beating, but the spring latches took a hit too...

now, the pins and bracket seemed to have been somewhat coated, maybe a zinc plate or something.. but obviously it wasn't up to the task.. at least to that abuse...

one hammered, and one disassembled and cleaned... any coating it had, is long gone...

now, the first thing for this is...... CHEAP!




whatever i do here will be in paint, for now... if i decided on powdercoat or something, it'll be down the road.. stuff comes off in 5 minutes...


this is more a question of what others like aesthetically ...... my conservative, "don't be a circus wagon" approach is to redo the components in silvers... the spring is stainless, so it's good.. but the bracket, and pin need coating... the bracket i can put paint on.. but the pin, i would either just cheapy clear em for now, than send em out for some sort of coating down the road.. due to the sliding action will blow the clear/paint off in short order..

my question for everyone is, should i consider throwing some black in here? either the brackets, pins, or even the handles.. or all... or stay safe, and just go with muted silver, grays, etc?

You could powder coat those small pieces yourself in your home oven for pretty cheap...

Maybe replace the pin with a some round SS?

The amount of manual labor you have in those is mind boggling. They look amazing. The drawers that is, not the fingers

yeah, i know, but endulging a couple hundy into a simple eastwood kit isn't in the cards now.. it was more about if adding some contrast with some black would look good...

i need to retain that pin.. it is actually cut for an e-clip to keep it all together.. i figure at some point, I'll get those powdercoated, farmed, or me.. but i want to decide if any of that, including those, should go black.. I kinda think it might looked good with the handles black...

so much to get done by the end of feb... i want the boxes/drawers done/ready to be installed in a couple weeks.. cuz I want 3, 4 weeks at least before going back to work, on the bellypan for the DS..

my immediate thought for if i went that route would be handles in satin black pc, the bracket in the same... and maybe do the pins in a silver pc.. hardware should prolly go black anodized... so the drawers and pins/springs would be silver..... maybe even plastidip the ends of the pins in red or something... been meaning to do that to the tubegate latch pins too....

the pin is the only thing i'm really concerned about.. and that's chafe wear.... i know "of" nitride.. and blueing... but would have no clue how to go about it... i need to look up who a local PC, coating guy is....

*weird aside* i did know a couple oldtimers that did chrome in their garage..

if i like the handles in black tomorrow, i think the obvious choice would be just do the pins in silver pc.... certainly not as good as a treated scenario like a blueing and such.... and will wear off at some point...... but if i'm dropping stuff off at a pc guy, might as well do those too... see how long it lasts... convenience and all that.. we'll see... for now, it'll all go paint...
