Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

I was just looking on Craigslist, a good condition used fridge seems to be a viable option vs the cost of a new one.

crushed my knee and reripped the hernia moving the old fridge by myself...... fug me..... eating sh*t face first in pools for decades wasn't enough....

Ryoken = trainwreck...

anyway... hopefuly it's sane by the end of the week....

can anyone enlighten me as to the scam that is "ceramic coating?" i hear a lot of the body guys talking about it on car paints.... i'm guessing a "true" ceramic is baked on and such.......

sheen babble.....

I'm gonna keep a close eye on my Sharkhide.... I don't want to have gone thru the skin layers this winter wetsanding these panels to have em get fugged up again.... at this point, if the sharkhide isn't holding up, I'll consider anodizing them... tho I have no clue what that would cost.... i'm leary of a clear powdercoat.. while the big concern is actually the underside, the tops need to remain servicable for scrapes and gouges.. PC doesn't allow for that.. and I'm uncertain that anodizing does either...

Had a set of Headers years ago with the latest technology "Ceramic coating" inside and out.....scrapped some of it off putting them in the truck. Not worth it IMO, but things get better? over the years maybe its much better now?

I'm guessing any ceramic coating on the market that you "wipe on" a paint job probably isn't any better than my sharkhide... baked on processes I'm guessing are "true", and much more durable..

just trying to figure out what the "ultimate" solution to the panels could be.. I'll spend a g on a process, if I think it's the right avenue... I CANNOT repeat this "reconditioning" process every 3 to 5 yr's......

Is there isn’t reason you can’t spray clear coat on them?

that's a topical solution that doesn't lend itself to repairing gouges, etc on the topside... like a PC would be.. the undersides, that kind of a approach is ok IMO.. just trying to seal out the elements.... but the tops need to be easily serviceable... that's what i like about the sharkhide, it's like "padding" lacquer on an old desktop.. easy, and easily cleaned off.. it may be the right choice.. just trying to edumacate myself on other coating processes I could be exploring...

i think that's an advantage to anodizing, as i believe it penetrates, and would somewhat "heal itself' from a gouge.. where as PC, and clear, once open begin to corrode/oxidize, etc...

There are different types of anodizing, we use a lot of hard anodize coats at work and I've seen guys try removing it when they thought it was paint and they were prepping for a bond and after about 30 minutes they didn't even have the 1" square foot stripped off. These guys are local to me but at least a good start for what might be available to look for and what ballpark the cost might be.

so it sounds like something that is very durable to scrapes and such.... I'll have to research a local place to me... thanks!

hmmm, this sound like I need to find a big, full service kinda plating place like that... and stop in "with Mutt" later in the summer when it's back together and blingy... and ask THEIR opinions on what would be a good coating... have them do my drawer handles, etc in black too...

well, back to work for a couple weeks, and pretty battered already... :screwy: lot's 0' fleshwounds, the hernia, right knee that i crushed with a fridge, etc... the joys of going from ripping boat mills out for a couple days, getting all nicked/cut up, than the next day playing with thinner and gelcoat all day, yay.... the joys of being a multitasking marine monkey.... :pimp1:

anyway, haven't even been in the LAB™ at all..... getting back at it tomorrow... :deal: gonna try to work thru finishing up the panels... get a little LAB™ time in... :grind: hang with Kai #bestbud and crank some tunes.... :saweet:

if I'm feeling more creative, think I'll go out in the afternoon and make up a template for the ds bellypan.... even though coughKertcough has forgotten about my panel tabs, I can still get a final panel shape i think... if i have to, I'll mod my own mounts from other various tube size ones i have leftover with carbide burrs and such.. just a bit of work, figuring... but I'll start with getting a big hunk 0' alum cut out first... always motivating to do fab over mindless sanding...

nice.. the furnace crapped out last night.. just threw a ton of parts at it in nov.. worked flawless all winter... pilots on. burners won't fire.. damper seems to be operating and the therm is calling for heat.. better not be that gas valve.. that was new too.. look at them the wrong way and they go bad....

anyway, got the electric one cranking down there warming up... for some "sanding sunday"... doubt i'll do fab today, bit chilly... just gonna hang with The Kai™, and watch the Masters, while removing my fingerprints in The LAB™... ;)

I didn't go back and read but did you ever do the flat floor in the rear of the truck or the whole floor? I think I remember you talking about doing it to the rear. I'm running and in bed tank and wanna do a full flat floor on my crew cab and was looking for pics to get an idea or at least see if what I've got pictured in my head will work lol

not yet, it's kind of backburnered for a bit... eventually...

iirc, it gets tight cuz the frame bumps up there some... the rear kennel portion will be raised up some for me, so it works out ok.... a true flat, front to back, might be tough due to the frame... the under support a flat floor requires might be into the rails...... if i get a couple minutes sunday, i'll take a peek and give ya my thoughts on it....

haven't been in the LAB™ in 6 wks..... going to bed at 8:30 every night... work is just stooopid.... working 6 and life on the 7th....

hadn't driven Mutt more than once or twice all winter... misplacing my black rigs keys the other day, gave me an excuse to run it around a bit... shake the cobwebs off... felt good, even with a skeleton out back.... :haha: no money for Mutt for a bit, but hopefully I can get back to finishing the refurb on the bed soon... chompin at the bit now that the weather has turned... :saweet:

That's where I am, working long nights 6 days a week, no energy left for anything else but a few minutes of family time

tried to work on my 7 day. after making an attempt at the yard...... couple panels closer..... some to go... need to gear up for overcoating the tube with fresh black.. wet scuffed it one night this week by moonlight..

I have some sort of deep infection in my left index finger that's throwin a wrench in Mutt/mY plans... i think it's a wolmanized splinter from last month, fingers all swollen, yada... if it doesn't subside by weds, medi-merge for me... :screwy: :haha: septicemia will not de-rail Mutt!!!! ;)

High school guidance counselor: What do you want to do when you grow up?
Ryoken at 18: I like peeling off my skin! How about skateboarding?
GC: Well, that will work for awhile, but you can't do it forever...
Ryoken: :(
GC: How about we find some other careers that will cost you skin for later?
Ryoken: :woot:

true dat.... went and got it impaled today... hopefully it's out and doesn't come back...

so... here's a typical build fugg-up... knew it would come, but ignored it in Tubebed Madness ™...

been back at it a few nights now.. easing back in.. with the marina load and a side thing i gotta finish up, i'm stoopid busy... and i realize that... it looks like Mutt will be a nekkid bed, weekend warrior for quite some time this summer... still a fair bit of alum panel work left, prolly 50 to 100 hr's, to have them all ready for reinstall.....

I also scuffed the tubebed down and will be giving a quick freshen of black before the alum goes back in... so the earliest I see the tubebed being back together and spiffy will be some time in july... maybe august..

it's all to have the rig ready for fall shows, etc.. I've got my fingers crossed to get the tank installed in aug.... next winters first project will be the dual bat box and finishing the ps side... Cummins withstanding...

ANYWAY......

I am considering splurging and doing the work lights on the rig this summer.... 90watt diffused lense ones from sidetracked....

$250 on sale....

sunday i start on the bellypan fab, if the rain ever stops... stoked i got my panel tabs and can do something creative, as opposed to sanding my fingers off...

but i'm currently trying to figure out how to get my wiring from the lightbar, and worklights chased thru my tube... :doah::haha: obviously i didn't account for it....

not sure if i wanna bother trying to cut a window of some sort, create a chase at the bottom of the C-pillar.. it just needs the one joint opened up on the ps side.... then it will turn towards the frame and come out over at the rail...

or... just run some loomy/conduit down the C-tube and be done... :haha:

it's this joint, but the ps one... i would obviously have to add a chafe tube and a storyline or 2....

Dang $250 a piece!?! The lights on my service truck and my 78 (6 total) don’t even add up to that much and they’re plenty of light.

This thing is still just the coolest to sit and stare at!
