Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

btw... how bout that winch rope? :ears: :ears: come on wheelers!!!! :p ;) is 1/2" x 100' or 150' a good choice? brands????

One of (if not the) high end manufacturer for synthetic cable. https://www.samsonrope.com/crane
A common supplier with a good rep http://www.masterpull.com/superline-xd-synthetic-winch-line/
Another, they carry both Amsteel Blue (samsonrope) and their own Diamond Line https://customsplice.com/collections/ropes
Good synthetic is significantly stronger than the same sized steel cable, the next size down on synthetic is often the same strength as steel cable. IE 5/16 synthetic is rated for similar weights as 3/8 steel core, steel cable. The bottom end cheap synthetics from China have equal strength rating to the same size steel.

Which cable diameter is gonna depend on what weight your winch is rated for but assuming typical 9-12.5k winch 3/8" the designed size and the winch is usually designed for 80-100ft.

Being in the marine industry you might be able to get it cheaper from one of yalls suppliers. Samson rope started there.

cool... thanks! yeah, now i remember amsteel blue... been a while since i was up on that stuff.. ;) it's an older Warn XD 9000.. mainly it will be for dragging boats/cars on to trailers....

wow, that's pricey! :o :o :doah: i was thinking like $300 for 100' of sum 1/2" type schtuff... i know the winch is 3/8, but i figured if i kept the line short, i could snot it up some. :o

I forget who just switched, and used something cheap sounding to me, $ wise. @AgDieseler?

don’t forget a new fairlead and hook

I moved over to the Warn nightline stuff, which was a ton easier to wind onto the drum compared to the original steel cable. I got 80' of 3/8".

With the fairlead it just needs to be smooth, synthetic works fine with either the haws or roller types. Some work with sandpaper on the rollers to clean them up if necessary.

If that's the main purpose you could go with smaller cable. My little 4500 lb winch uses 5/16" and it's been used mostly for loading vehicles onto trailers. Primarily full sizes without issue, 1 m35a2 (deuce and a half) weighing 13,000 lbs. Snatch block run off the front axle and back to the trailer on that pull. That winch has about 100ft on it. 5/16" would probably be perfect since the winch won't actually be pulling hard in your stated application.

Hahaha yea price is the downside to synthetic unless it's the cheap stuff like you find on amazon. 1/2" is beyond overkill for the 9k winch though, that size is meant for 20k winches. My old military wrecker used 1/2" on the crane rated for 20k. With steel cable rigged up in a 3 part line, it had a 3:1 safety ratio for lifting. With synthetic it was a 5:1 safety ratio.

2 pics of weight ratings. 1st is synthetic Amsteel Blue, second is typical steel core steel cable. On the steel chart at the bottom of each size the weight ratings are SWL (safe working limit for overhead) followed by breaking strength. So the 3/8" steel is 4250 lbs SWL with 15,100 lbs breaking strength vs the synthetic at 19,600 lbs.

3/8" will be plenty. We just use OEM Warn 3/8"-125' steel cable on all the M12000 inches at work and it will easily do way more than 12,000 lbs. Most of the trucks that have winches that get used regularly all weigh more like 16-20k before being stuck ad no one ever two parts their winch line.

You don't want a wire rope s-rope that that is stronger then the winch. You can get rope at shop but parts for a winch u would have to order. Jm2cw

just put in a decent order at McBible... 1/4" black UHMW...... bunch of hardware... fabric shrink sleeve, few other things...

decided to run the 1/4" UHMW on the ceiling and tray/track... that'll take up a 1/2" of the inch "spacing" i needed for the loop height.... the track is 3.5" wide.. the ceiling UHMW will be 4" wide since it won't have a guide... gonna rip a 1/4" off the tray one to ensure the carrier tracks nice between the guide walls..

next is a wire order, that one's gonna sting a bit....

latest issue averted..... boring minutia ahead...

in this pic, the track is about a 1/4" off the left wall... that's cuz the slider hardware is there.. no big, was just gonna pad the non-hardware areas out a bit to keep it away from the sidewall... well, just realized it needs to be another 1/4" further, maybe 3/8" inboard..... not a huge ordeal, still enough room in the tray... just glad i caught it now....

just went to start making the wire holddowns out of the Delrin, when i realized it doesn't matter on the ceiling, cuz it's far away from the sidewall, but down on the tray, the holddown needs to sit outside the track to the left a bit.. for the bolt...

on a good note.. i'm gonna run the 2 pos AND both grds like originally planned.. i also did a tentative mockup bundle for all the 14g triggers and a 10g grd... that should shrink up a tad smaller than the 1/0... with the fabric shrink, i think they will lay nicely from side to side.... a bit more space in the height department.. but that means the holddowns need to be wider than the track...

good note #2.... being i need to raise the tray a 1/2" over there.. I'm actually going to circ saw the floor out there, than put the wall/bottom in as needed... this will allow a cleaner install, more stable hardware for the UHMW and track..

this is why i need to do a wire order... i need "over the full length" sections of what I need for that trigger bundle.. do the shrink, and leave extra to size in the tray, and longer the other end....

EVERYTHING revolves around the entry/exit point to the track.... so i want to wait till that bundle is actually made, to do the delrin blocks....

end babble....

oh, couple of sidenotes.... this is gonna be the first time I'm gonna try to employ welded alum nut backers... was kinda hoping I could find "heavy" versions, or flanged, but didn't see em.. I could do it all just thru-bolted.. but as with all the panels on this bed, I just think it's gonna make this whole box soooo much easier to work on, install, tear-down, yada... if I don't, there will be very specific steps to taking things apart... some unneeded....

and just to explain how much of a kook I can be.... I'm gonna use black oxide fasteners to hold the black UHMV in place.. awesome... but the 2 at the ends of the track to secure it have to be "undercut" heads.. shallow.... can't get em in black, only passivated... I can see me touching em up in black, no doubt.... :screwy: annoying, it's McBible for God's sake... :dunno: :haha:

Ancor is the best brand hands down.. but yeah, that's a good price.. hopefully it's comparable quality... I paid about the same for my Ancor WITH my discount.. list is well over $200 iirc...

right now I'm deciding between killa marine stuff thruout the rig, thru work.. or just running GXL crosslink, which I don't get a deal on..... just need to run the #'s thru our catalogs....

Yeah I also get free shipping with Amazon prime, I can have it tomorrow, I checked out the link for Jamestown, I am pretty sure shipping will add at least $25 or more.

trust me, even if "a bit less" it's gonna be a HUGE improvement over any "auto" cable, or even welding, sold... the tinned REALLY makes all the difference...

good lugs, shrink, you'll be golden... I'd be curious to check it out... I'm kind of spoiled (obviously) when it comes to that stuff... ;)

* Ryoken - still battling in tha cranium where to run the main breaker panel *

I have been curious about if the tinned cable was worth getting. Sounds like it's a good idea.
