Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

thanks man, appreciate the offer and props... :)

yeah, i wanted some depth, so it would have that shadowed feel... one of the probs with those letters beyond the font, is that they are shallow at the top and bottom, and more pronounced 1/2 way up.... they have a curve...

NotLaw has been hooking me up with various CAD ideas/renderings.... I'm not sure which way I'm going to go, with the black background style, or an individual letter one i had him do... it has the GMC a bit bigger than the existing one, and the 5.9 is a tad smaller...

i may order those, and one with the all-in-one background, to give myself a choice.... that Shapeways company seems cool... they do black too..

the one thing is, the single, background one, is actually a good bit cheaper than the individual letter one we came up with.. the single is like $23, whereas the individual letters would be $48.. i'm guessing that's due to # of pieces... haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I'm grateful to Notlaw for taking the time to hook me up with something a bit more pro that is beyond my capability...

stoked on how I think the overall look of the dash will be once done... :saweet: back to work monday, so I only have a couple days left till I start torture season... :doah:

Yeah, Shapeways, like many places that provide a printing service, charges a per-part processing fee. Its not much, but it adds up quick.

If @dbcorvairracer can print them up on a makerbot though, that would probably be much more cost effective.
As he says though, the parts would probably require more post-processing then a shapeways part. That being said, even a shapeways part may require a bit of processing to smooth out the print lines.

@ryoken, Those STL files I provided you are exactly what dbcorvairracer would need to print any or all of those parts.

had to break out the solder stuff to get juice up the mallard's arse.... ;)

couldn't be happier with how Mutt's "evil eyes" turned out.... just need to wire em into the turn signals at some point...

Yea they aren't cheap but I had an old shtbox f100 I was building a gasser out of that I already had flat black that would been cool with that on the hood I sold it 5 years ago tho

FTR..... the gauges on the left will be fuel level, oil pressure, volt #1 & volt #2.. the ones on the right will be water temp, oil temp, pyro and boost.. gonna run FP out on the hood..

decided to only do needed switching on the left and leave the right alone till I add systems like heat/AC and the throttle control... left switches are wipers, washer, lightbar and park/headlights.

hopefully i work all week, but can sneak in wet blocking this out and getting it in black at night for next weekend...

How hard would it be to copy that ? 3d Print ?

That thing would sell......... just saying

I like how it is basically a stock looking one fits into the stock spot.

that all brings up questions posed when I did the one for the K5.. this one IS improved I will say....... 3D printing, i have no idea... i know they have those fancy arm machines to plot it out.. not sure how accurate the CAD would end up...

on my level to reproduce, the only viable method would be a 2-piece mold... which is a bit more challenging than a regular mold... at that point it would just be glass layups. but i would need to charge between 300 and 400 to make it worthwhile... i wanted to do a website with an interactive thing where you could set up your own layout, etc.. sell gauges and whatnot...

all that said, i think there is a company out there, maybe classic dash or some name like that, that is doing a similar plastic one.... it has angle correction.. that's really the way to do it I suppose, injection molding.. but obviously that's a whole level of finance/capability i don't have...

checking out the indicators.. even with the killa camera, the pic doesn't do it justice.. they look great in person, but seem too bright for the cam to pick up right and see the arrows, etc.......

figures..... the last 3 gauges I'll need down the road, are by far the most expensive... the dizzle tach, boost and pyro are $750!!!! doh..... better start winning the lotto.. tach is 450, boost 100 and pyro 200....

need to get volt #2 out of Mutt, paint the trim ring and hopefully get this installed next weekend... but even than, only the speedo will be working for a while.. till i build the harness, dizzle, etc....

One problem I had with making my own LED indicators was the blue high-beam indicator was way too bright. The turn signals didn't bother me much because the weren't on solid and only stayed on a short time. The high-beam was just on and stays on for a long time.

They seem ok in person, you can see the arrows, etc, but if you catch it at the wrong angle, it's stooopid bright... I think I may try to diffuse the lenses some like I did the mallards eyes to see if that helps...

I'm also pretty fussy about dash lights, I prefer them on the dimmer side.
