Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

Well, thread sealer usually does not dry. Its not a glue that has to set up, its more a lubricant and an imperfection filler.

Tapered pipe threads are self sealing by design. You just put the pipe dope on them to let them tighten down better without galling and make it easier to get them apart later.

Unlike PVC, pipe threads are ready to go as soon as you put them together.

That explains a lot....:doah: I might read the instructions one day...

technically you don't need a sealer with NPT, it is a taper after all...

that being said, there are many, many prioducts that can be used as thread sealer, depending on the app... is it gray Pipe Dope?

Nah...it's this mustard yellow sealer that's good for gas...I guess I just figured that compressed would have to be sealed...

It's called RectorSeal Soft Set 5 Pipe Thread Sealant....it does say not to "pressurize" it over 100psi until after 48 hours....

OK...I just ran a tank of air...I don't know how good of a test one tank is but if it's any indication, there is much, much less water...there was just a little mist in the water seperator and I didn't feel any on my fingers at the end of the hose...
We shall see what happens when I run it for real...

Did you notice much water coming out of the new drain at the end of the steel pipe?

Or more than before coming out of the tank drain?

Running the pipe up out of the tank should cause more water to drain back into the tank now rather then going down the hose.

man, this is going so agonizingly slow...after the pipe and stuff I am broke...but hopefully I can get some sanding done this weekend...I need to get the bodymount set also....

The boyscouts are doing their annual merit badge swim in April Bay....I got to get the Blazer out there and batton down the beaches..:doah:

Slowness is sometimes part of the process...

There have been numerous times when I had to stop the build to do something "in support" of the process.....building shelves, buying specialty tools, building a hydro bender attachment, adding new wiring, etc.

It can be frustrating since it feels like it adds nothing to the build, but in reality a well-equipped shop will make you more efficient every time you head into the manspace....and ultimately the quality of your work will be better as a result. :thumb:

:usaflag:

words of wisdom...

ya feel guilty not putting that time into the rig, especially when ya have tons to work on, but it makes ya faster and more efficient in the end.. even if that's just cleaning the shop up...

now that ya got some decent air, ya really need to make your next expenditure an air DA.. they're under $50 usually and it makes sanding much faster and efficient.... ESPECIALLY when ya have a whole truck to sand... orbitals are slow as he!! compared to a DA...

When it comes to $50 DAs does anybody have a preference or opinion?

eh, not particularly... I'm actually running a freebie Crapsman for air in recent yrs.... National used to be nice back in the day.. maybe a porter cable (they usually make quality stuff) or camble hausfeld, maybe ATD..

I bought a cheap DA...hooked it up...water and oil dripped out of the weephole and started slinging water and oil everywhere...
The amount of water has drastically decreased with my pipes...but there's still enough in there (probably in the 25' rubber hose) that it drips out of the DA...

This isn't going to work for me until I get a big dryer of some kind.

I saw a MAC HVLP SPRAY GUN 1.3 MM in a pawn shop for $60....is that too much? I "looks" clean but I guess you never know about the nozzle.

I own that gun.. my mac guy gave me a smoking deal on it.... with a 1.3 it does fine for base, and can do clear, don't like primer tho... that's not a horrible price, decent quality gun.. once again, i think it's a Sharpe made gun....

oh, and I'm guessing your still creating water in your hose, if your not, you should definitely be using one of these at your tools..

I am using one of those at the tool...

I am about to have some seriously dry air....I located FOUR of these discontinued dryers...and I am thinking about hooking up every one of them....:eek1: I'm supposed to pick them up tomorrow or Wednesday...

Are they just pieces of pipe with drains? Or do you run water though them to condense the moisture out of the air?

If they are just pieces of pipe, then they work like the black iron you just put in.
Only shorter.

They hold 2.2 pounds of dessicant beads...
