Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

Maybe I should actually use Rust Bullet on the master Cylinder....:haha:

full circle shark hunter, full circle... :pimp1:

Almost....true full circle will be when it is painted and I take a picture of that same area that was rusted when the thread started...(although it's not even the same metal)

Got to page 71 of this post.. Great stuff thanks to all for the info...

However, I feel the need to comment on sandblasting material. I did a lot of research and found that Crushed Glass Grit is very effective and completly inert.. That means safe. Sand and most other media are dangerous to your lungs.

If you use glass you only need a paper breathing mask and face shield. I sandblasted my blazer frame. I put tarps on the ground and when I was done I captured most of it and ran it through a very fine screen and re-used it. Again and Again.. Saved a lot of money and only used about 40 lbs to do the entire frame.

Since glass and sand are both made from the same material... (sand), both are just as hazardous to your lungs. ;) Paper breathing masks don't do anything for fine dust, only particles that are heavy enough to fall to the ground easily. Use a sealed mask for anything you don't want to get in your lungs.

Oh I agree you must use protection. The point I was trying to make was that the crushed glass is considered inert vs. sand where the silica will interact with your body.

Stolen from net:

"Silica sand is among the most popular sandblasting media types. Although it is inexpensive and effective, it also creates a significant amount of dust. Besides the mess involved with the large amount of dust, it has also been proven to cause lung disease in some users. As a result, places such as Portugal and Germany have banned the use of silica sand as type of blasting grit.

Crushed glass grit and glass beads are also effective types of sandblasting media. They are recyclable, making them rather economical. As a general rule of thumb, the smaller the glass pieces, the slicker the surface will be. The beads are commonly used to clean calcium build-up on tiles around hot tubs and swimming pools. In addition, either type will clean fiberglass, lighten grout, and remove rust or mold. "

Stolen from another site:

"
Safer: Dust is classified by OSHA/NIOSH as "nuisance" dust. Contains less than 1% free silica unlike most coal slags and has virtually none of the OSHA identified Heavy/Toxic Metals associated with slags and some other mineral abrasives.

Cleaner: Manufactured from 100% Recycled Container Glass. Directly helps reduce landfill waste and limits the use of more toxic slags. Non reactive and inert. It can be used near and around water.

More Benefits
• The Coarse & Medium products are approved on the California Air Resource Board's List of ABRASIVES CERTIFIED FOR DRY OUTDOOR BLASTING UNDER EXECUTIVE ORDER G-06-053
• Glass is listed on the EPA's Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines for Blasting Grit.
• Numerous government studies in the U.S. and Europe have confirmed the environmental and work safety and effectiveness of using recycled glass abrasives."

Just pushing glass as safer, greener, and may just be better overall than Sand.

:)

I'd hate to have to pull a small trailer for the top just to drive to Edgartown (Amity), but I've made up my mind....everybody has a bucket list...I only really got one...I want to drive the finished Blazer to MVY and drive around the island for a couple weeks....pretend for real that I am Martin Brody....and go look at all the Jaws sites...

Worked all day on getting the jambs / quarters ready for seam sealer. While stuff was drying I tore apart the passenger side seat...that wasn't easy...the foam didn't want to let go so I got a torch and set it on fire...

And now, just one more bit of wet sanding and it will be ready for the seam sealer...didn't get there today

jambs look good..... gonna blast/paint the frames?

Yep...gonna take them to the guy with the huge fire hose sized sand blaster and get them cleaned up good...zinc...and paint.

I already got the seat foam and seat covers...gonna take them to a pro after I get the frames painted.

I think the old foam was original, but not the seat covers...but hard to tell...there were these rods that run front to back that hold the seat covers inside the cut grooves...those things look rusty and original and almost impossible to get out...so maybe they are original blue seat covers.

Think it matters what kind of black I paint the seat frames with? :dunno:

nah, whatever you want the exposed bottom to show... obviously all paint rules apply... hardened paints are more durable as are shiny paints, etc, etc... I'd rattlecan em myself...

Hey...I wonder if you would willing to do something....and don't think it's ghey...if I were to mail you my 3 triangular top hold-downs and pay for the return shipping, would you sandblast them in your new cabinet and zinc them and send them back.

It's more a symbolic thing than anything...as much help as you have given me over the last few years I thought it would be cool to have you actually restore a part of this Blazer.

Just let me know if you want to mess with it or not.

I could send a half of a half pint of the single stage Urethane paint.....and a six pack of something...

well, I don't expect the cabinet to be up and running for probably a month or so, but if ya don't mind waiting, sure...

I can wait...I have to find them...It may take that long to find them :haha:

Oh...and don't even think about customizing them...they are the only set I have...:haha:

come on, how about some edge-lit plexi sharksteeth mounted to em? in amber to match the rig! :woot:  :dunno:  :screwy: :haha:

sorry, carry on.... ;)
