It doesn't have to happen the 1st weekend, but it would definitely be a great idea to clean the garage while the truck is away....
The final assembly is going to be a clean process, so getting rid of all the old greasy, dusty stuff you've got around will help to insure that the final product looks flawless. If you are reinstalling moldings and original grillwork, etc it would be good to get it all cleaned up and polished NOW. As soon as you see the fresh paint on your truck, the last thing you are going to want to do is install old grubby parts onto it...... And having to clean them up later (when all you really want to do is install them back onto the truck) is going to test your patience to the max!
Any chance the body shop would let you sneak in once a week to snap a few "in progress" pics? You'll probably wish you had a few later on....

I told them I would and they said ok. They aren't good about returning emails and I don't want to bug them to death on the phone. I'd like to know when a major phase has been done so I would know when to go take some shots.
They are only open Monday-Friday so lunch break is my only chance to get over there...it is across town, only 8-10 miles nut in horrible traffic at that time of day.
Even if you couldn't make it "perfect" and final paint it, with Paul's help you certainly saved a WHOLE LOT of money by getting it to that last step before bringing it to a body shop. I can't imagine what it would have cost to have a shop do all that from start to finish.

I got bit by the bug after a Jaws moment...I realized that I had always wanted that Blazer in Jaws and I was now able to actually try to get one.
As for what it would cost for someone else to restore I have those figures...twice.
When I first got the Blazer the quote was $10,000 and a year to complete.
Just last week at the Maaco they showed me an old truck that a guy brought them that had completely been sandblasted and it is sitting in their shop raw.
That guy is paying $10,000 to have it restored...
So $10,000 seems to be the magic number right now.
BUT, I wouldn't trade the knowledge and experience I have learned about it for $10,000. There's nothing like knowing your vehicle inside out...I learned historical stuff about it that is priceless to me....and found a great group of guys who share the same passion for Blazers...
Also, that $10,000 to restore is after the cost of Blazer...so...purchase price + shipping + restoration would have been around $15,500.
and that was just body and paint...that didn't include interior restoration.
After this paint job I will be sitting at about $18,000 total in it. Then comes trim and interior...so the paint job is what...65% - 70% of completion?
I got much more to go...but this is by far the most exciting and nerve racking phase of the restoration.
On June 20, 1975, Universal released the first true summer blockbuster, “Jaws,”...what are my odds of having it painted and in my driveway by June 20?

Pretty fair odds I'd say. And people do often severely underestimate the cost to fix up these old trucks. That's why you see so many failed projects. I'm just happy to see someone stick with it through it all!

my office is now decorated with Jaws prints by Paul McPhee and I also got a nice set of short fin Mako jaws...can't take great whites anymore...it's like ivory..they are protected.

now I got to replace the front wheel bearings....
I'm gonna have to call Maaco and see if there has been any progress....they aren't good with communications...I am like an expectant father waiting to hear anything...

Honestly if he tells you a month, don't be surprised if it takes 2 months. I've never had anything come out on time from a body shop.
and if your expecting "update calls or e-mails", you'll be disappointed...
