Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

I know where some are...question is what condition...I got two yards to try...

Is the sandblaster who damaged it your guy or the body shops? Why do you have to pay for it?

I took it to the sandblaster last year...just didn't know the warping was as bad as it turns out...I now suspect that is also responsible for the warping on my doors outer skins...

Went and walked one whole yard...no dice...the hoods I found were the 1979-80 ones.

Went to the Pick-n-Pull and they had four 1973 and 1974 C10, 2 of which had rotted hood, a white one with a very clean hood..that had been bent in half for no good reason...the hinges were seized and some jackass just tugged down on it and bent it in half.

The last one is a 1974...it looks reasonably clean and straight. I will go back tomorrow because they wouldn't help me with it, nor would they loan me a 9/16 wrench, nor would they let me buy it and come get it tomorrow...
The hinges are seized on it too...I just hope some jackass doesn't ruin it before I can get to it

price $49 :eek1:

I would like to shut the hood so I culd get a better view and see if it is bent in the middle...not sure why those hinges are so locked up

only rust I saw was a little surface rust on the inside edge of the front lip and a couple stone dings in the middle of the hood.
There is no rust in the vent area or in the bracing

Anything else I should check out before I buy it??? :dunno:

it looks straight to my eye but its hard to believe a hood could make it 39 years without something being wrong...

also lesson learned...don't sandblast a hood with sand...

pretty sure I warned you of that...

The sandblaster sold me on the idea that his industrial sized sandblaster would work so fast it wouldn't have a chance to generate that kind of heat...

so I actually payed to ruin my perfect hood...:doah:

OK...crazy day...went to the lot took the hood...took it to the paint shop...got sidetracked when i saw my Blazer with its wheels back on it and parked in the parking lot...anyway, back to the hell

They showed me the repop hood...man it was perfect...except that butt ugly front end...I told them I just couldn't do it...so they unloaded the hood

I go over to the blazer which is now blocked in 400 grit. It will be painted next week.

Walk back to the hood and tell the bodyman I am sorry I have to do that to him but I cannot put that hood on my Blazer and then we walk over and look at the used hood I brought him. He looks it over real good and says it is rusted out...once again...it looks ok to me...paint looks flat as far as I can tell....he took a wire brush and scraped the paint off the front and it looks like swiss cheese...full of holes...

I'm ticked at this point...load the used hood back up and take it back to get my money...they kept $17 "core" charge....

I get back to work...and start thinking...Desert Car Kings on Velocity...I give them a call...actually they are Death Valley Auto Parts....ask about a 1974 Blazer hood...guy tells me they got one in unbelievable shape hanging in the loading bay...said they found it on the yard and couldn't believe how perfect it looked so they brought it in and hung it on the wall...that was a year ago...

I told them to send it to me...so I got a nice original Arizona hood on the way...and as a neat side story it is coming from the television show parts yard...:eek1:

Oh you. If it werent for bad luck, you'd have no luck at all. I guess its not all bad. If it shows up and is good, you'll be in good shape.

I'm still baffled at the logic of the aftermarket...1973-80...that's 8 year models

2 of those are different...79-80.

What do they choose to repop and offer for all 8 years? the 79-80.

Where does that leave the other 6 years for restoration folks? Seems like they would sell more units if they went with the plain hood.:dunno:

eh, you guy's are homo ghey! :haha:

I'm a HUGE bodyline guy... it's my deal... early 70's muscle? pffffft... 70 to 72 Cuda.. sorry, deal with it!:haha:

anyway... cool, bang out what ya want... :woot: I hope he squirts ya right.... :haha::o

once it's balls on, nice in your garage, after 3 months, I'll be happy.... I"ll even dance the jig for ya! :deal:

The bummer really is, people still buy them! And put them on there pre 79 stuff! Half the sweet ass perfect resto trucks you see on ebay have a huge flaw stearing you right in the face with that stupid hood.

I now refer to that hood as the "mustache" hood because that's what it looks like...a queer French guy mustache :haha:

eh, you guy's are homo ghey! :haha:

:sign9:

Lets use a different example. 68 Chevelle with a 69 front clip. Still looks really good! But doesnt look quite right. If you were restoring your 68 chevelle, and all they repoped was 69 parts, would you use them? Or would you get it right and find good used 68 parts? $10 says you would do what it took to get the right model year parts on it so that the look was juuust right.

wow..don't know about you but I like the 1968 Chevelle much better
