Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

well, your only real options are either to sand and overcoat, or you can try to compound it off... but with satins, that usually doesn't turn out too well..

if your gonna recoat, combo of scuffpad and some 320/400, clean, tack, couple quick coats...

I can't begin to say how much that sucks....but I haven't tried to pressure wash it yet either...maybe most of it is dust

hopefully it's just dust...

you can do a wetwash with lots of water and a bit of white compound/polish on a rag, may take it off... if it's overspray, a pressure washer ain't gonna get it..

I tried another method...I taped off the K5 and used a Q-Tip to put water soluble hand lotion around the letters and then sprayed paint one swipe at a time, waiting 7 minutes between coats
Then I used several wooden skewers and cleaned the paint off the outer edges...still got some cleaning to do....then have to figure out how to paint everything else black:

Spray painting is definitely the way to go for inside the letters...it lays down flat and smooth like it is supposed to do

I am skeptical about trying to brush the black background...wouldn't that be uneven and have brush marks? :dunno:

It's super hard for me to describe, but at work we have to touch up parts by hand with a tiny little paint brush and paint. To make it look smooth when it dries and not have brush strokes in it, I I get a large sort of blob of paint on my brush. When i touch the brush to the part the blob grabs on to the part. With it grabbed on to the part, and still globbed onto the brush, I can use the brush to pull the blob around the part until enough paint gets onto the part that I have to re up my blob.

Whatever. Anyway, I'm with ryoken. Razor blade and rattle can would probably still be quickest and easiest.

also a q-tip with a bit of thinner on it works wonders for cleaning the top raised surface...

if you do decide to try and brush something, ya always want to have a bit of reducer in with the paint, even a splash, it helps the paint layout without brushstrokes...

it's part of how we roll/tip boats...

In the modeling world we use spray mask or brush on mask. You can brush it completely on then when dry, us an exacto knife and score where you need. Then with a pair of tweezers you can lift up the masking and remove. All other areas stay protected. Once done just peel the remainder of the masking is just peeled off.

I hadn't read the responses before I started...I am trying a new technique which I thought of...I'll show pics after it dries....it will either work or likely be stripping it again

Here is what I did...instead of taping and cutting with an exacto, I decided to get a small bottle with a dropper on it. I dropped dish washing liquid into the letter till it filled them

Then sprayed the whole thing black, and then went back and used the Q-tips with paint thinner on the high edges.

It's not perfect, but they are good enough to put on the Blazer...they look great from a distance...but they are a little rough close up...but I have been unable to find a set in any better condition than mine. One day LMC will start selling like they did the grills.

took it for a long drive today...sunny and 58 degrees...when I got back home I raised the hood and hosed the black parts down...they mostly cleaned up...it is the hood hinges that still look dusty...guess I will have to spray over them at some point.

I tried to put windshield wiper arms on something weird is going on....they stop in the full up position....why is that? :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

Looking superb Chief...great job on the emblems. What's left?

Dash components, inside bedside panels, rear seat, tailgait insides, spare tire holder, blacking all the wheel wells, fiberglass top, adjusting door glass to operate smoothly...etc...

Emblems look great!

Did you remove the wiper motor when you painted the fire wall? I would bet you installed the arm on the wiper motor 180 out. Other wise, just re install them where they should be.

yep i removed the wiper motor...wonder if you have to loosen the motor to get the armature off?
