Don't feel too bad man.
Did a suspension rebuild on my buddy's 89 Camry 2 winters ago. Struts, tie rod ends, cv-shafts, other assorted silliness.
During the rebuild we had to be quite hard on the tie rod ends to get them to come loose after 20+ years and almost a quarter million miles.
After the work was done it drove SO much better.
Except for the clunking it made every time he hit a hard bump. Slight road bumps and regular driving nothing. But hit a pothole or a crevice in the road and CLUNK!
We looked everything over for days.
Started to wonder if we had messed up the rack and pinion during our brutality. Wouldn't have been good as they aren't cheap or easy to fix.
Then in one last fit of "look everything over" we noticed...
...we had never tightened down the upper strut bolts that hold them to the mounts on the top of the wheel wells.

We did them to hand tight while installing them, set the vehicle down, then promptly forgot. They had a quarter inch or so of "wiggle room". Tightened them down and POOF gone.
