Stomis' 94 Street Truck - Snail Trail

Well I was up in jersey for a week or so to see the OG misfits play with danzig. So that was fun and crazy good. Can't escape jersey without turboing something :D

And Ive been smashing away on my truck while I wait for parts for a customers jeep.

Downpipe was way trickier than I thought it would be. Turns out at full right lock you're shoving a 4in pipe through a 4.5in space thats also on an angle...

Then my insanely huge intercooler came... 27x13.5in core. I quickly realized that this thing was barely going to fit, and it wasnt going to be easy by any means so out came the pie cuts.


Ive always just kinda of "gotten by" when it came to thin aluminum. Ive never been great at it. Throw me on some 1/8 or thicker and I can lay out nice beads all day but the thinner stuff was just always spotty for me. So I made it a point to really do some homework and get my machine down with settings and such for what it was, specifically to do intercooler piping because obviously thats kinda part of this whole forte.

Well after a little research it turns out that the little I was taught about aluminum was basically wrong lol. Dialed in the settings and much to my surprise my first attempt at laying beads over 1/16th thick pie cuts wasnt too damn shabby. Im more own worst critic though, always room for improvement.

Custom everything lol. When I positioned my turbo it was completely in regard to jamming it straight in the intake for air to water. So when I changed directions and went air to air it threw a wrench in the works...

Box of stuff from summit on the porch full of fittings and misc crap. The agenda today is to add about 5 gallons or so to my fuel cell and get it dropped down through the bed floor at the tailgate to get some more weight shifted back. O and mount the intercooler too lol.

The list of "need" for parts is getting way shorter. I should be getting my 3.5in holley touchscreen to use as a ECU gauge pack for $100 off from someone on facebook and I need to order a 450lph walbro. I decided to just go for a single 450 pump for now simple because it will supply enough fuel for what my bottom end will handle. Once I get some gen 4 rods in the bottom end Ill twin it with another 450.
 
You should make a stencil to spray paint Frigidaire on the cooler...
 
Looks awesome, wish I had the equipment/ability to weld aluminum. That exhaust is going to sound rediculous, in a good way. I started mine the other day with the downpipe and a couple feet of 4" no muffler, may leave it that way.

Aluminum is a strange animal thats for sure. You basically throw out everything you think you know about Tig welding steel and start fresh. The arc doesnt distribute evenly when starting your weld, it jumps back and forth between the two pieces depending on torch angle and can make welding 2 different thickness materials together quite tricky at some times. Plus machine sizing is a huge factor for thicknesses. Welding something too thick or too big for the machine can be so daunting it just flat out doesnt work because the material just rips the heat away from the weld zone so fast.

Im by no means an aluminum expert. In fact my pie cut pieces came out pretty darn good but my tubing to intercooler pieces were fairly lackluster IMO. If you're interested in welding aluminum you cant beat an AHP Alpha 200. Its what I use and is about $650 off amazon.
 
Thanks, I'll def look into that one. I was looking awhile back and noticed that most of the budget friendly tig machines where ac voltage. So I held off and picked up argon and a spool of aluminum for my mig welder. Needless to say that didnt work out so I had to pay someone to weld the brackets onto my intercooler and radiator a couple weeks ago.

Aluminum is a giant sponge for heat. Thicker pieces might need a little preheat. Nothing crazy just take the chill off of it.

Now if extra heat/penetration is needed you can use an Argon/heilum mix or even straight heilum. Just remember to turn up the gas flow rate. With heilum it'll burn in really good.

With inverter type tig welders sharpening the tungsten to a fine point helps also. Lanthanated tungsten works really good for steel, stainless and aluminum.

I found a class I might be actually able to compete in somewhat local. It's a "street" class and it seems like the only thing I'll need to change is extend my down pipe past my door. Which I'd probably do out of aluminum. The only downside to this class that fuel is unlimited, which makes no sense to me for a street class. Meth is permitted so I could go that route with pumpgas but I'm going to need gen 4 rods to break the 1000hp mark reliably to compete I think.

I'll fully admit to messing that one up on that :whistle: lol. It was still usable though :D. But it was one of the first aluminum projects I tried when I first got my tig welder.
 
That's not too bad, just a couple evenings worth of work. I'm really interested in seeing how it runs, our builds have a lot in common and should be close to the same weight. Except you have way better engine management.

What's your cam specs?

I don't remember seeing it, but I'm assuming you got bigger injectors now with the turbo setup?
