TBI Mods:Snake oil or worthwhile??? Updated 5/19/12 AFPR and Pod Spacer!!!

I was actually hoping to put the the pod spacer, AFPR, and my new reciever hitch on today, except were are in the middle of a huge snow storm here in eastern Pa... Crazy weather!!!!

after my mods, including the fuel pressure increase, i was consistently getting 15 to 17 with 3.73's, 32's and the 700... that was about 60% highway, 40 city.. unless of course i was flogging it...

first run was 70-75mph interstate at 12.2mpg. second was 55-60mph 2 lanes and about 40mi intown at 12.6mpg. I think it might need timed a little better. but it wasnt what I expected either. I think 4.10's are in store for the future.

I figured this might as well be my build thread, i haven't been doing much except collecting parts and driving the snot out of this pig... Winter blend gas is here and my fuel mileage has dropped to 15 mpg. I've been having trouble with what I think is my injectors gumming up. I change my fuel filter and it always looks clean, but I keep having to add seafoam every 2 or 3 months to clear up a hesitation and idle issue. I'm wondering if this is due to the ethanol in the fuel?

I picked up a NOS gov-bomb 10 bolt rear for an m1009 with 3:08's still in it's original crate to replace my current rear. I haven't decided what gears I want yet... Toying with putting it in after winters over and trying the 3:08's out. I have 3:73's now, the 3:08's would make my OD unusable until about 65 mph, which I'm fine with. Either way I'm looking at a regear, so why not try it? I compared the gear ratios of my 700r4 with the th400 the diesels ran and they're pretty similar. I have a taller 1st gear and my D(drive) is identical to the 400... My truck has a lot of get up and go, so I think as long as I keep it out of OD until we are cranking down the highway at 65 to 75 mph I might be fine? Definately time for a transmission cooler and guage, I don't want to cook my recently rebuilt transmission.

I was given a used set of 32" Goodyear mud terrains by a coworker. He bought a used pickup and couldnt stand the noise on the highway, my trucks so loud already that I don't care!!! They have about 70% of their tread left and they were free! I was going to buy some mud tires anyway, because the Blazer is being "repurposed" this spring! It's getting setup as our Crisis Response vehicle for our church that travels all over the US after natural disasters to assist needy families with things like tree removal, roof repairs, flood damage, etc... I'm pretty excited, I can't explain in words how nice it is to help people who feel helpless! I spent a month this past summer rebuilding homes in New Orleans and we actually got to move 2 families back into their homes after almost 6 years! The one family had been forced to live apart for almost 6 years, they had home owners insurance, but they have yet to pay a dime to help them rebuild. Meanwhile, they still had to pay their mortgage on a house that was completely unlivable!!! So awesome to stand in their living room the first night they got to stay there together again!

Sorry, I got a bit off topic. So, I've got the classic saggy k5 rear, and an m101a2 military surplus trailer that is going to be part of this combo. It weighs about 1100 lbs empty, we won't be loading it real heavy, just mostly tools, equipment and supplies for 3 to 4 people for a week at a time. The issue is it sits about 4 inches higher than the blazer's rear. Trying to decide about adding helper springs, zero rates, or a small lift? Thoughts?

Oh, I forgot. I still haven't put the pod spacer, fuel pressure guage, and AFPR on...... maybe over Christmas break!

3.08's + 32's will kill your mileage. You may be spinning slower at 55mph but it'll take more grunt to get up to speed and you'll burn fuel there.

It'll take more grunt to maintain speed on the highway too.

Remember at the lower engine speeds, it's not making as much power as it does at 2000-2500 RPM. That's why you can cruise down the highway at speed with your foot just barely on the gas.

I suspect you're right, but what do I have to lose by trying it? A tank or two of bad mpg's. No matter what I'm looking at a regear, and this truck spends 99% of it's time on the street. I'm copying your bed sides covered in bedliner by the way!

hey, i dug out the salad bowl, things been sitting on the living room floor for a month now..... but i still need to find the grommet... sorry, i'll try to dig it up this weekend... i should be able to send that out next week for ya...

Scientific method it is then!:pimp:

I will say on the bedsides...measure measure measure. I was in a rush and my original bedsides were very water damaged...so mine don't fit perfectly. They did turn out pretty nice though.

FWIW, if you are regearing you might consider throwing in a different locker or limited slip and ditch the Gov-Bomb.

I forget, why are you getting rid of the rear axle? Does it have something wrong with it?

Yeah, it keeps chewing up bearings, after two rebuilds(1 by me, the other by a shop) I decided I'm not throwing anymore money into it, that was when I remembered that when I bought this thing it had one really mangled rim, the metal for the bead is actually torn, and it had a tube in it so it would hold air!!! So I started to suspect that part of my problem is with the axle housing itself... I can't touch a 12 or 14 bolt rear pricewise for what I have been able to find so far, and I got a really good deal on this 10 bolt, it's complete drum to drum still in it's crate for only a little more than a used 10 bolt from the junkyard...

Yeah, the M1009 rears are the deal.

I'd definitely recommend ditching the Gov-Bomb.

I think his old rear is tweaked and problematic.

I would have no problem with a brand new gov loc in a street/dd application up to 33" tires.

I will say though that regearing while it's out of the truck is easier. At least in my experience.

Awww, come on... You guys had me feeling all scientific, now I'm back to feeling stubborn and stupid! Hahaha

So I retired the Blazer from daily driver status a week ago. I love driving it, but as gas has crept up it now costs me $100/week to fill up... At this point I can more than buy a new commuter car and pay for fuel, so it just doesn't make sense to keep driving it every day.
The silver lining? I can finally start tearing into this thing! I've got a huge collection of parts and projects that have been on the back burner in part because it was my daily driver. It still brings a tear to the eye to see it just sitting there...

Quick list of what's to come:
1) Minor rust repair & paint
2) Regear & swap in the m1009 rear, possibly add zero rates
3) Install leather front seats w/center console seat from a newer Tahoe that I scored for free!
4) Herculine the interior
5) Finally install the remaining injector pod spacer, AFPR, fuel pressure gauge, and salad bowl. Then tinker with fuel pressure and timing.
6) Rebuild or reseal leaking transfer case
7) Swap to manual locking hubs, and Service front axle.
8) Mount fire extinguisher
9) Figure our better seat belts for the kids

I'd like to have it all done by the Rausch creek trip, but June 9th & 10th is approaching fast!!!

Here's my temporary DD, my wife's '99 Mustang... I bought it new for her after she graduated college. It only has 58k miles and gets 28+mpg commuting(5spd w/6 cyl).

Oh, I put the 32" Goodyear MTR's on that I got for free from a coworker, no noticeable difference in the trucks "get up an go", but my fuel mileage definitely dropped versus the old 31" all season tires... But the hum and vibration from the mud tires covers up the vibrations and noise from the slowly failing stock rear!!!

Hey guys, I got a Helix Power Tower for my blazer with the truck. I was considering putting it on but I just wonder how comparable it is to CFM? Will also be doing the salad bowl next paycheck. What other bolt-ons work with this truck?

Look similar to this?

First I've ever heard of it personally, but I say try it out, just make sure to set your TV cable so you don't ruin your transmission, and you may have to raise the bracket that holds the cable housing and throttle linkage.

Things you can try:
Salad Bowl
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator
Pod spacer
Ignition timing
Air cleaner mods
Tons of other ideas here in this thread, you can also do a google search for "ultimate TBI mods". I like to do one mod/change at a time so I can easily figure out if something worked or if it didn't, that way it's easier to correct any issues that may come up. Curious to see what you find out, and post up your results.

It does indeed! It's got some ridges in the holes, im assuming so it does a swirling motion going in. I am truly loving this truck! I traded my 1978 dodge powerwagon for it and have no regrets. I'll probably get around to doing some performance mods once I get everything else fixed. I just finished up with the tailgate on it. I had to replace the window motor for the tailgate and lube up the latches. Now, the dome lights decided they want to stay on so I have to rip the kick panel apart and replace the door jamb switch. Lots to do, hopefully the weather will start cooperating soon here in fargo, lol maybe a little less snow would be nice so I can get out there and work on it so I can get to the fun stuff!

ok i need ur guys help i got a 87 k10 350 tbi stock but no cat and glasspack muffler its got 308s and 35s but the previous owner says he had the tranny geared different to make up for long gearing and big tires. a friend of mine who is a great mechanic says thats very unlikely, but the truck has balls i can pull up to a stop sign and with out the brake mash the gas and burn the 35s so what r ur guys opinions?
