TBI Mods:Snake oil or worthwhile??? Updated 5/19/12 AFPR and Pod Spacer!!!

I just ordered my salad bowl finally, Jeg's had them for $38 with free shipping. I figured I've gone this far, why stop now?

It's the Hypertech version, but how different can they be? I'll look into trimming out the air cleaner base to allow as much unrestricted air in as possible. I think it's somewhat pointless for this motor, I really believe I'm already flowing more air than my current heads, cam, and motor can really use, but why not try it? I was wrong on the throttle body spacer, maybe the infamous "salad bowl" will kick it up a notch.:dunno:
Starting to get motivated for the trip to Rausch Creek in June, these past few months have really been kickin' my arse... I needed an afternoon of tinkering with the Blazer to get me going again!

it isn't how much, but more how it enters the TB that helps with the salad bowl.. which I apologize to you for never getting back to about.. now I'm using it on Mutt...

the fuel bump will be your most noticable power gain...

I didn't do the recommended procedure of installing the guage and checking pressure before I installed the AFPR, but judging by my idle, it ran similar to the stock FPR at approximately 10psi and smoothed out when I got to 13psi. So I'm going to assume I was only running at about 10psi originally... Ryoken, no hard feelings, it went to a good home! I've been following your new build as well.

i checked my psi on my 350 with napa basic replacement pump in tank and its doing 11psi on my autometer sport comp electric gauge.

no mods to press reg yet.

yeah, I think the K5 was about 10.5 stock for me.. I went to 13.5 and really felt it...

that's one thing I'm stoked on doing to Mutt is a custom tank with a sump and an external pump right outside the tank.... gonna be badarse and very maintenance friendly....

That would be sweet, of course when my pump died 4 years ago I had just filled up of course. I started trying to swap it in the street by myself and after screwing around for a half hour trying to figure out what to do with 30+ gallons of gas, I said screw it and towed it to my buddies shop... I'm not sure what pump I have in mine, but I'm sure it's a cheap one, he only charged me around $275+/- including labor. Time will tell....... It could be any day now!

yup, f*ck them intank pumps... plenty of quality externals pumps that work awesome, especially if plumbed right at the tank with a spin-on filter....

gonna have an NPT drain plug in the sump too..

A drain would be a good mod, last week I pulled 1/2 quart of watery, cloudy muck from about 3 gallons of super unleaded W/ethanol blend that I had bought maybe 2 months ago for my mower... I can't for the life of me remember which station I had bought it at either. I work for a fuel distributor, and this isn't the first time I've seen the ethanol crap seperate in a tank, but this is the first its happened to me personally. I have been having issues with our vehicles that aren't driven all the time, and I was just thinking what a pain it would be if that happened in one of my cars. I was amazed at how much of it had changed/seperated, and what I was able to keep is now a darker gold color, and smokes when I run it thru the push mower.

the ethanol is a pretty big deal in the marine biz... we see a fair amount of phase seperation and other issues...

but yeah, a drain will be such simple great addition. just have 2 1/2 NPT pipe plug holes down there. one feeds the pump, a drain and a return up top...

FedEx delivered my salad bowl yesterday afternoon, it was installed on the truck 10 minutes later! I took it on a 135 mile run last night and I'm pleased to say that the truck definitely runs stronger with the Pod Spacer, AFPR, salad bowl, and with the fuel pressure bumped up to 13psi. It's time to start tweaking the fuel pressure and the timing.
I drove the truck on my commute to work today so I can take the air cleaner assembly into our shop and trim the center of the air cleaner base to open it up to the width of the salad bowl. We have an air grinder with various cutting tool bits that I'm hoping will do the job easily on my lunch break... I'll post up some more pics and update later on today hopefully.

Great info, I have to pull the cylinder heads off my 88 'Burb because the guides are shot and I have been picking up improved components to go back with when I finally get the time to do this. Being able to follow this thread has helped with my choices:waytogo:

The air cleaner assembly cuts pretty easy. 10 min job with a jigsaw with a metal blade.

Is that what causes 'em to shoot the blues on start up only? If so my 88 burb is doing the same thing:waytogo:

I think you'll like the salad bowl mod, I have yet to do my pod spacer or pressure regulator. but the salad bowl and spacer both made noticable improvements. Gotta get the reg and then rebuild a different TB with all the super mods. I've heard you have to get the chip reprogramed for that though:dunno: That would probably suck, I dont even know how to start that proccess

Yeah, our shop manager helped me do it. He took one look at what I was about to do, and went and got his cutoff wheel and his electric jigsaw... Took us about 25 minutes total, including removal, modifying the base, cleaning the air cleaner assembly in the parts washer to get all the metal shavings cleaned out of it, and reinstallation. I'll get some pics after work, I only had a 1/2 hour for lunch and didnt have time to take any yet. They just layed a couple guys off, so I don't like to be hanging around the yard too long, out of sight, out of mind!!!

I still havent even cut my air cleaner base and it was noticeable, I think i should get that done. I'm making my own dual inlet CAI though so maybe I'll wait till then
