The Beige Jimmy

It wasn't easy to hear in the video, but it was missing at idle.
Even though I cleaned off the carb as best I could by blasting 4 cans of carb cleaner on it and sucking down a can of Berryman's, it had a slight miss and backfired a lot with partial throttle, so I am rebuilding the carb.

It was pretty dirty inside.

Looks good. I’ve found doing a couple of carbs over the summer is really satisfying to do.

Update:

It runs, but has a miss. I got frustrated and got busy with other things in life. It's been parked since Halloween.

Timing was at 4° BTDC and I was able to get it pulling 17" of vacuum at a steady 800 rpm idle by adjusting the idle mixture screws. When I revved it up or took it for a drive, it missed badly. I used a stethoscope to listen to the valve train and it seemed noisier on the passenger side than on the driver's side.

Fast forward to today and I pulled the plugs. It hasn't turned over since I pulled it into the garage over a month ago.

Before the carb rebuild, 6 and 8 would cake over with black carbon. Now many plugs are oily, especially on the threads. I think the threads are wet from a leaking valve cover gasket.

Did I screw up the intake manifold gasket install? I'm going to check valve lash now.

Did you double check the plug wires are on in the correct order?

I could have sworn I did. In fact, I was so sure I had the wires on the correct plugs that I'd typed out a response in the affirmative. I've been avoiding working on this miss since I had worst case scenarios going through my head. Full engine rebuild, crate motor, or a Vortec or LS swap. I was prepared for a wiped cam or some major failure.

But before I posted the reply, I thought I might as well check them again... 20221217_152644.jpg

Yep, turns out I'd mixed up # 5 and 7. It runs perfect now.

Although it did spring a coolant leak. It's always something.

I have had my '90 leak a couple of times on those heater connections. I had to swap out the clamps, couldn't figure out why.

Have you tried more initial timing? 4* seems low to me.

The clamps and hoses are new. Since that photo, I took them off and reattached them but slid further out on the pipe, with the clamp closer to the bulged out portion of the pipe. No leaks yet.

4° is the factory recommendation for emissions, which I'm fine with. Not looking to win any races.

I've swapped plug wires enough times myself, I had a feeling. :D

I went to take it for a drive last weekend and the battery was dead according to my charger. I took it to O'Reilly's, who confirmed a dead cell.

Fortunately I was within the 3 year warranty at Costco, so I exchanged it for a new one.

But this old battery tray has seen better days. Might as well freshen it up while I've got the battery out. 20230107_142226.jpg

Took quite a while sanding it by hand before I busted out the wire wheel and dremel tool.
20230107_160928.jpg

Scuffed it up all over.
20230107_160924.jpg

Shot it with some thick primer.
20230107_162417.jpg

Hit it with some black Krylon.

These little manufacturing details are nice.

I did find some rust on the inner fender. Not going to worry about it for now.

I should have taken a before shot of the coolant overflow tank. It was crusty on the outside and rusty on the inside. Simple Green brought her back to life.

Refreshed tray and tank in.

Battery in. The end.

Unfortunate about someone downgrading your battery cables to those squeeze clamps. Nice job on the clean up of the battery tray and overflow though.

That's the only style NAPA had in the length I need. I could convert them later I suppose.

I hoped the side post battery with factory hold down would be enough to appease you, but apparently my hard work and suffering were not enough to stave off your mighty wrath. Please accept my humblest and most sincere apologies.

As my penance, I firmly resolve, with the help of thy grace, to confess my sins, install a 1" body lift with zero rates, and to swap in my front axle this winter.

Amen
