The Beige Jimmy

Get many compliments out there?

Martin
Had some old feller today threaten that he would have wanted to steal my Jimmy if he still had dark hair, which by the looks of him was probably back in '84.
He was very complimentary and I get quite a few thumbs up now that it's nicer out and I'm driving it more.

That boosted my ego, so I did some tinkering on it today. I inspected and lubricated the rear window mechanism. It's never rolled completely down; the top lip of the window protrudes beyond the edge of the tailgate by almost 1/2".
I'm not sure if that's normal, but I saw no binding of the window regulator and the motor and switch work fine for now, so I put it back together. Forgot to take pics.

Next I did a little more bodywork to fix the rust holes.

And after. Looks just like it just rolled from the fact'ry.

Made some improvements since my last post. 20230528_130747.jpg

Threw down a little rust converter paint as a preventative measure

Good enough for the girls I go with.

Last weekend I drove an hour and a half south to buy these bumperettes.

They were in OK shape, but the seller had to cut off the welded-on bolts with an angle grinder.

So I had to get creative.

I drilled them out on the tailgate, listening to Alan Jackson.

Next up on the list, in no particular order:
-Emissions testing
-If successful, title, register, and plate in Oregon
-Front axle swap to 3.42s to match the rear end
-Install gauge bulbs
-Reassemble gauge cluster/dash pad
-Install chrome rocker covers
-Install stock radio
-Speaker upgrade
-Cruise/wheel
Wow, I haven't made much progress on this list.

Spent the morning reading back through this thread from the beginning. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Still have the AC parts?

Martin

I liked that you liked all these posts (finally). The ac parts are on the shelf next to the steering wheel.

Next project for this should be to install the new front end parts, axle, and zero rates.

I wanted to reLike a bunch of them!

For some reason, I thought the front axle was already under it.

@regal403 there is a nearly identical Jimmy for sale here in Denver right now, pretty wild to see such a close clone.

I love that diesel sound, but those wheels have to go. Such an ugly choice considering how stock the rest of it looks to be.
I'm also jealous of the sliding windows and side steps. They're both of my kinda sorta wish list.

INDESTRUCTIBLE 6.2 DIESEL!!

except the 2 piece crankshaft mod.

Bunch of horseshit.
I mean are you trying to sell that 6.2 on in 2023. We all know what they are and what they aren't 40 plus years later....

Are those wood blocks on the swaybar?
An ‘84 wouldn’t have a 6 digit odo ?
Those seatbelts and core support got alot more than 33k on em.

It's had a lingering gasoline smell after the carb rebuild. Sometimes the garage would smell like fresh gas the next day even. Found a small leak from the carb inlet adapter, so I snugged it down. The leak slowed, but didn't quit.

The youtubes tell me there should be a little gasket between the adapter and the housing. Google tells me the Teflon tape I had wasn't necessary.

20230625_120942.jpg

Yep, no gasket.

And there in the left over bits and bobs from the carb kit sat the neglected plastic gasket.

Cleaned off the Teflon tape and all the threads, reassembled with the gasket and no tape, changed the oil, and hope to drive it to work tomorrow.

I'm taking the minivan out for our wedding anniversary dinner date tonight, since it has AC.
