Actually the bearing surface is super smooth. But I’m thinking that’s a false harbinger
 
What might have caused the bearing to relocate and get all conjugal with the cover?

That’s impressive damage. Shoving a bearing through a case and breaking the housing is a good one. Congratulations?
 
What was the problem the last time it was pushing the bearing out of the case?
I missed the front snap ring on the output bearing. That's the bearing that takes most of the load. So without it anchored, it pushed back. My guess is the drive shaft cycling and the helical torque helped to drive it rearward

Bunch of trouble caused by that little snap ring. Now you know what happened, if the shaft looks ok and a new bearing slips on I bet you can run it just fine. I think that bearing cover is the same for the 205 and 203. If it is, I have 2 up here from some range boxes I pulled off 203's. The extra parts from the 203's all went in a box. Let me know if it helps you, I will send one down.
 
The bearing surface on that shaft looks good in that one picture, even though it isn't even wiped off yet. Since you found the actual problem and you aren't running high speed on the front drive, I bet that it will be good.
The picture with the bearing still stuck on it looks bad.
