The Great Smaug

Ah, good to see. For a while about 2009 those seemed to be drying up. Guess the military surplused more out.

Side note: These engines use standard #5 oil filters, like many other American trucks. This leads to some interesting catalog cross-referencing.

:haha:

MX-6 shocks arrived today. Shiny. Playing around with them I'm already happier with the extra 3" of safety margin. It looks like the front 5125s will be just peachy.

That pinion snubber.

K10's and K20's ordered with quad shocks also got it.

Martin

I was about to ask what other options got it, the 89 burb I bought for the 350 had it. It also had quad shocks

@Chevy305, how much difference did your Hurst short-throw shifter make? Did you run the stock stick before the switch?

I'm wanting to run the NV3500, so I think the difference will be smaller than what you had. But I haven't driven a late-model NV3500 yet, just the HM290 & NV4500.

I have driven a NV3500, I don't know what your criteria is, but I was as impressed as much as I was when i had a nv4500.

I wasn't.

Gear splits, I also thought it felt clunky, and it wasn't as smooth as I would have liked.

As I told you before, I couldn't believe it, the day I figured out that a nv4500 was the hot ticket. I junked a perfectly good one once...
Also as I told you before the 3500 would be better for you imo.

I'm aware that the NV3500 is a better fit. That has been the plan for a while now.

I brought up the NV4500 because I wanted a Hurst vs. stock shifter comparison, and I know that Glen went through that with his NV4500.

I'm looking at buying a late-model NV3500 right now. Today the shop selling it sent me this picture of the broken shift tower:

It would be a fine time to upgrade, if it actually makes a difference. Otherwise I can just buy a stock shift tower.

I'm pretty sure that the NV4500 has a longer throw than the HM290 I drove, but it's been long enough that the memory is kinda fuzzy.

I would go on record to say most aftermarket shifters are probably better, but I also wouldn't expect much out of a truck trans.

I also go on record to say we bought a b&m shifter for the race Jetta, and it wasn't any better, and also broke twice mid race before we replaced it with the stock unit.

So that's my proof that aftermarket isn't always better.

I’m of the opinion that it’s a manual trans going behind a 6.2 in a big heavy 4x4. Were not splitting the atom here, shift points are something that have never really bothered me but I can put up with more than most
