The restoration/modification of Daisy.

I'm a bit confused. Are you running the 4 core or the 2 row replacement?

I have the two row aluminum replacement. I referenced the big four row because that is what people familiar with these trucks will recognize. The two, 1" tube aluminum core units were never factory installed, they are service replacements for the old copper brass four row unit. Delco started the trend around 2001 or so. That is when I got mine. I expected a nice Harrison four row factory radiator in the box, but was greeted with this big aluminum Harrison radiator with plastic tanks. The Delco number is (was) a 20978, but it has been discontinued for a while now. At the time, I was very surprised that an aluminum radiator as big as that radiator is could be had for that price. I chalked it up as a win and put it in the truck I was building at the time that later donated its components to the Suburban. If you are on a site with cataloging, use something like a '79 K20 400/6.6L with A/C and A/T as an application and look for a 730 in the part number. For example, I know Spectra uses a CU730 number.

Work starts this weekend, I need to do something about my front tire wear before it leaves town again. I've got some negative camber, I'm thinking the king pins might be shot. It would be nice to just replace the upper bushings, I guess I need to take it apart to see what it needs. I should have done this before I put the front axle under the truck, I was in a hurry back then because the city was on my ass about the suburban being Inop. ( For those that haven't been following all along. )

The nylon bushing is kind of the sacrificial wearing part. With the tire on (for leverage on the upper and lower pin), give it a prying wiggle at the top and bottom and see if you can observe any play. Might give you some insight before tearing it down.

The lower bearing is pretty stout, and I'd tend to agree that you'll only have to replace the bushing and spring.

Last time I serviced the uppers, I added a washer to the spring for additional preload. Seems to delay the onset of death wobble that comes from worn springs.

i don't have springs anymore, i'm running WFO springless steering arms for my crossover. Vegas4x4 actually hooked me up with some free kingpin bushings, from what they say, the pin its self very rarely needs to be replaced. i'll replace the bushings this weekend and pull the lower pins to check the bearings while i'm at it.
 
Yeah, I think his Sub is pretty damn awesome. Someday when I make it up to vegas want to check out you guys trucks.
 
I just read through this entire thread. Fantastic work dude, really great work, and i admire the way you stuck with it.

During blazer bash last year Scott and I ended up on a portion of metal masher by ourselves, I was truly impressed. The burb worked and took everything like a champ.

That short little time was my favorite part on the trail. :thumb:

I read every step of the thread, looks like it was very well thought out.

I did miss/forget, is there any or what kind of lockers?

I've tried, thanks guys! Phil, I've got a Detroit in the rear and the front is open.

I've got a new radiator on the way, I'll post some photos when it shows up. This weekend I'll get it installed and hopefully move the trans cooler.
 
This is a nice unit. This thread is one of the main reasons I want a more streetable/dependable/multiday trip rig. Something to spend the weekend in.
 
I've said it before in this thread and I will say it again. Scott's ride is really something to strive for. Nice thing is almost everything transfers to blazers and pickups
 
Thank you guys. I've got some new goodies in the works for Daisy. Her new radiator showed up the other day, once I get fan mounting figured out I'll drop it in there and relocate the trans cooler.

Look at this sexy bitch, big improvement over my old one, 28.25x19x2.5" core.

Did your overflow tube Bung show up installed? Mine came loose with f'dup threads. That was extremely difficult to work through.

It showed up exactly as shown in the photos. I took it out of the box and snapped a few photos of it before heading out to the garage.
