The restoration/modification of Daisy.

I think Stephen has told me, or I read it here, that by the time he specs out rear springs to still haul a load and not wrap horribly you pretty much end up at the Tuff Country springs they sell. But I could be remembering wrong.

I plan to run air bags in the crew cab for handling the load of a camper trailer.

I feel you on the leaks. The tired, smoking, old 350 I had wouldn't leave puddles but the fresh 454 does from the rear main. Now the trans/tcase adapter has started to leak. I keep looking at the axles and thinking "well at least they aren't leaking!" I'm springing for the deep pan and lube locker gasket for the 4l80e because I don't want it leaking.

Lube locker makes a 4l80e gasket? Sweet! I'll have to look around at some rear springs, I've already got the shackle flip in there so it'll have to be a stock or near stock height spring.

Exactly what Stephen told me when I ordered springs for my K5.

FYI: grade 8 Allen head fine thread bolts make great center pins and can be had at good hardware stores :waytogo:

Yeah, none of the hardware stores nearby have them in a 5" length. The spring shop is closer than the store that carries bolts I can use, haha!

I picked up my center pins today. Tomorrow I'll go out there and shim the rear axle up a little and see what that does for me.

Yeah, down. lol!

Well, **** me. I don't have enough u-bolt left to throw these shims in. I was at the spring shop yesterday, the very place that makes u-bolts. I really want this done today, I guess I'm heading down into Vegas for some new ones. :mad1:

Did you get steel shims or aluminum?
Steel.

Well, it's definitely better than it was. There's a vibration that comes on at about 62 mph that has been there since I built the truck, it gets a little worse at about 77 mph. From 40 to 60 mph it's much smoother than it used to be, I guess I didn't realize how much it was vibrating before. I might take it to the driveline shop and have them re-balance this thing but for now it's greatly improved. My engine and trans are both mounted on poly bushings so I'll never get rid of all the vibration.

New center pins, shims and u-bolts, all torqued and ready to roll.

Much better, the t-case and rear axle are within one degree of each other now.

This kinda shows how beat my rear springs are. You can see how the spring has a weird curve behind the axle and how it's flatter before the axle, which causes some pinion angle issues. This is at ride height, with the trailer on, it sits 2" lower.

Haven't messed with it yet. I need to replace the radiator and fix the transmission leak before I worry about springs.

I put daisy on a scale yesterday at a local recycling yard. No cargo, just me and an empty fuel tank. Guesses?

I’ll take heavier than I thought for 6900.
