Wage92's 78 K5 Build

Well i grinded all the places i was going to weld the panels in and it started raining so i guess it will have to wait til tomorrow :frown1:

on a better note, a guy is buying my axles tomorrow, this leaves my axle upgrade fund about 50 bucks away from a hd 10b/14bff with 4.56s! hopefully will get figure out how to get that in the next few days.

Alright its been raining here all week so i havent got much done, but i welded my pieces in to be drilled for the body mounts, next up is grinding and painting the frame. Next weekend is looking like its going to be sunny and nice so hopefully i can do it then.

Also, i know the pictures arent great but how does my welding look to you guys? ive only been welding a couple months and just wanna know if im on the right track. just looking over them myself, it looks as if i could have had it running a little hotter, does it look like that?

First, looks like your prep is none existant. Shoulda been welding clean, prestine metal! Second, when your welding a joint like that, you need to stay on the base metal a lil longer and let the puddle wash up on the plate more consistantly. Third, tie ins couldve been better. But all in all, Ive seen a lot worse! Good job, unless you wanna grind alll that out and start again. :waytogo: oh, when your gunna weld. Get set up and run a couple dry passes with the mig gun before every bead you lay down. Just to make sure you can make a complete pass without getting bound up physically. And wire wheel that weld clean and add a coat of primer to it since your outside and dealing with moisture.

well it was ground down to bare metal just far enough for the weld to be clean, you can see in the middle picture where i grinded it. And yes i agree with you, i knew i wasnt staying on the base metal long enough, i still gotta work on that. oh and the reason some of the welds end mid bead, is because it wasnt mig welding, was stick.

Thanks for the tips though, hopefully by the time this blazer is done i will be more comfortable with it!

In any process, you wanna run a couple practice passes. Just to make sure your not gunna get bound up. And your gunna wanna prep more of the weld area then. Id go about an inch or so. You can still contaminate a weld if you havent preped enough of the weld area. The little metal beads threw me a little. A simple stringer prolly wouldve been fine and a lot cleaner looking

Okay, good to know. And stringer? what do you mean, sorry for my cluelessness haha

Hard to tell you exactly what I mean. But basically, you just drag the puddle in a straight line where the two metals meet. Drag it fast/slow enough to keep the puddle round or in a circlular shape. You do not weave or oscilate the electrode. To me, its easier to run stringer beads with the stick process than with mig but Im an idiot too. Hahaha

Ah okay, seeing as how im still just learning mostly, i do that sometimes, but for these i was making like little circles as i dragged the stick across. Someone told me to move the stick around a little while you make the bead, is that incorrect?

thats all bad with the stick process. Doing little circles means your going over weld youve alread laid. And trapping slag in the process. I dont recommend it for any process. Some do it for mig cus it keeps you on the "edges" longer but you can achieve the same thing by moving your electrode in a "zig zag" or "Z" pattern. Just move the electode from side to side and pause a little when you get on the edge. :waytogo:

okay, makes sense, next time i use the stick i will try to get it right in the corner and just drag it. thanks man

just go slow and watch the puddle washout onto your material. Then move forward accordingly. Remember to keep feeding the rod as you drag. Your starting with the right process! Once you get good at stick, you can do all the othere processes! :pimp: when you start with Mig or tig you develope lazy habits. :waytogo:

thats what i hear, ive been doing stick for a few months now, but i have a mig as well ive used a few times and its freakin easy. Have done tig once and got the hang of it within an hour or two, but thats the extent of my training haha

Well, i hold a mig cert. And in the process of taking my 1 inch unlimited stick cert, i got slag in my eye and couldnt finish the test. I passes the half i did finish but not the second half and just havent had the $500 to retest. I wanna get all my pipe certs so I can make some real money but at this pace itll never happen. :doah:

Okay so here we go, since i last updated this, the frame has been primered and am waiting for a non rainy day to give it the final coat of black paint. In the meantime, got me a set of axles, d44 HD up front and posi 14 bff in rear thats been beefed up majorly, 4.56s all around :D from the same guy i got a hardtop and tailgate that needs some work and he even threw in some diamond plate panels for free :D taking a week off the k5 to clean up the basement and garage and organize my parts, next up will be figuring out how im gonna clean the rear axle and paint it and then gotta make an order to DIY4x for a shackle flip!

Brought this home over the weekend:
