1976 C-10 Stepside Shortbox - Beagle's Build

Yep, it's past the 100 year flood.
The river crested yesterday. They thought it was going to crest on Sunday.

Last night we got 3 more inches of rain.
My backyard is flooded for the 5th time in a month.

Anyway. Back to some build thread type of stuff.

The machine shop called me two days ago.
Told me he was ready to start machining the 454 block.
Yes, it's been over a full year since I dropped off the engine. Probably closer to 1-1/2 years. His backlog is that big, he's that good I guess...

So anyway... The 496 build is officially on....
How longs the wait til you get it?

He said he could run it through until it was done.

Problem with that is, BBC stuff is expensive and I won't have the extra cashola to finish it right away.
I am going to use the Holley muti-port fuel injection on this thing. Which is around 3 grand. So hopefully they have the happy holley days around Christmas time.
So basically the plan is to build the long block over the next few months and then pick up the Holley stuff in December.

We talked, he said we can pencil in dyno tune for January.

Sounds good to me.
I will drive the truck until November anyway, so I won't won't to pull it off the street until at least then.

It will make my current Avatar picture so much meaner knowing their 650 ponies behind that sheet metal

A cam and tune will hit them numbers in an 8.1..... Expensive as F**k! though. Can't remember the company but there's only like 1 that makes aftermarket stuff for em anyway.

I am fully aware of the displacement calculations, that's why I had the Dual finger flick off smiley. That was supposed to be sarcasm.

Now about the factory 8.1. The factory heads will never support 600/600 numbers.
If I bought a factory 8.1 liter engine I would be not gaining anything because I would still have it rebuilt.
So it makes no sense to spend $1,000 on take out motor, when I had this 454 sitting around. Plus as I learned I have one of the better 454 blocks for high performance motor.

I've looked at the raylar stuff. Probably good. But like I said l, it still the same rabbit hole chasing performance.

I'm unfamiliar with sarcasm

But you're preaching to the choir about using a 454. You'll like the Dart heads. We ran Dart heads on our big blocks as well

I know. Anyone with experience building high performance engines will get it.

It's kinda like when I built the 406 a few years ago.
Everyone said. Just LS swap it you can make 500hp for cheap.

Well when you really start breaking it down you can't. Sure you do a tune and cam and blah blah blah, but to make 475 horse na is still going to cost you.
Plus it seamed like everyone wanted me to use a junkyard engine. I wanted 100% new and rebuilt. Not a 140,000 mile take out.
And yes I know they don't have shit for wear with modern efi. I get it.

So after all then I still have to convert the truck for the LS. I wanted to go a 6.0 in the worst way. To keep up with the cool kids.
But to build a legit 475hp/514tq motor the dollars and cents just didn't calculate

If you are paying for machining it's a wash, but if your using used parts than the Ls wins usually, and the other thing that you are leaving out is that usually the Ls motors need no help or little help with compression unlike all small block engines... just say it, you like the lower torque curve.. that is the main difference.. old motors make torque way sooner.. but that's the platform limitation, it's almost like comparing NASCAR engines to truck motors... nothing wrong with a hopped up bbc nothing sounds like one spun up either..

Lol. I want a 454 too. :waytogo:

I just remembered the power numbers someone on here said for the 8.1. Forgot about the kit having heads.

The fact that only one company does aftermarket for it and it costs more than my truck did to upgrade, pretty much killed the 8.1 idea for me too lol.

I hadn't seen that Holley kit before but I like it :D

You'll have to buy tires by the truck load:burnout:

That's the main take away... I would completely rebuild it. So it costs money to even play the game. I had the 400 sbc. Just like i have the 454.
