I blew up a gov loc in a 14 BSF once doing stupid stuff and it put a few holes in the diff cover and lost all the oil and it started whining real loud and smoking a bit. I removed all the debris and welded the holes shut and filled it with oil and kept driving it daily for a while and eventually sold it. Apparently it survived better than yours.

Ok, huge thanks to @GWeakland620 and @Bent77 for conspiring between themselves to get me a nice used 4.56 gear set complete with carrier and pinion bearing housing.

Those two fellas are class acts, and I greatly appreciate the donation to my cause.

All of that, however, was sh!t on by FedEx when they apparently kicked the package off of the back of every truck it was on. The gears look ok. I really haven't had the time to scrutinize every square millimeter of them, but I am confident that any potential defect found due to the mishandling by FedEx can be dealt with. The carrier bearings are wasted though.

I am a bit bummed, naturally, as I was hoping that I could cheap this 14 bolt back together and use the bearings supplied by Greg.

Since that is no longer a possibility, despite Greg's best efforts, I need to look into a bearing kit.

What I am seeing are kits that don't include 84 and 85 model year 14 bolts. I am fairly confident that I don't need to worry about this because the 4.10 gear set that I removed from this axle says 10 78 for the build date. In case those weren't the original gears, is there a date stamp on the housing anywhere?

If not, am I correct to assume that the only difference within these affected years of 84 and 85 is the third pinion bearing?

And does anyone have a cheap Detroit locker that they wanna let go?

That’s awesome of those guys. Sucks about the fabulous delivery service....

Yeah, that stinks. I hope you're able to figure it out one way or another.

Garage update.

It's Millertime.

Thanks Mark.

Some of you saw that @Bent77 recently retired his old Miller in favor of a shiny new Hobart. After about 2 seconds of "extremely intense negotiations" and nearly 30 seconds for me to put my boots on, he convinced to come up and relieve him of the "burden" of 2 MIG machines.

It was a really "tough" decision because I simply didn't know which welding hood I was gonna buy.

But seriously, thanks to Mark I am now able to glue metal together.

Which of course in no way means that I am able to EFFECTIVELY glue metal together. So no pictures.

Thank you Mark for making me a deal that I couldn't refuse.

Dude I’m right there with you. I’ve only welded twice in my life. And both, gladly, were never photographed.

I do have a line on a Hobart for this summer so I’m excited to learn to glue metal right with ya.

I just picked up my first one too. Went with the Vulcan MigMax 215 as it has had really good reviews.

Funny, I came across this thread over the weekend and thought about bumping it but didn't want to hassle you. I save that for @6872xtc
