Do you know about the trick of putting the drill bit through a plastic cup? Just the bottom half , so that the bit sticks out to see it. Of course, it can be easy to destroy the cup when the bit pokes through.

Do I want this tank cradle super tight or should I leave a smidge of wiggle room?
Specifically the front to rear fitment...
Obviously the straps will keep it up, but do I need to leave some wiggle for frame flexing?

I probably wouldn't have taken it that way if I wasn't already upset at that moment. Not you fault, no harm, no foul.
On the floor. Was gonna leave it up there but I still need to modify the bed bracing and cut an access panel and figured the tank was safer out of the way...

I don't think the body lift is required on a short box either...
The tank would have to be positioned just right in the frame however, with the main goal being "not using a body lift", instead of worrying about maximum available ground clearance. The top of the tank sits flush with the top of the frame rails (at the rear, not the axle hump) which is good with the body lift. No BL and the tank would have to be lower...

I can say for a fact the extra 1" was needed for the fuel filler hose to fit between the frame and bed.
both of my frames were/are late 70's.
I think with the tank in the right spot it is doable on a shortbox. But I can't be the Guinea Pig anyway, as I do have the body lift. But it is neither here nor there, because I already said the end goal would have to be making it fit without a body lift, which wouldn't place it in the ideal spot for a wheeling rig, or a rig with a rear bumper.
