1986 K30 - Rapid Learning

Get 'er cleaned up and solid.
Cool, thanks Mark. I think I will use that for the nitty gritty wire brush cleaning.

A pressure washer.
Maybe I can just bring all of this stuff to my local spray bay and clean it there...

Also, what would you all suggest for kingpin replacement kits?

This video helped me out a little bit when I was still trying to figure out how it was all put together:

So, I was thinking of buying their kit:

However I love supporting ORD because I know they make great stuff and they're a Colorado company. Their kit is just pretty dang expensive. Nearly the same cost as the Ventures but only for one side:

I think I need to go outside and take a close look at my caps. I know that my passenger lower cap is toast, but perhaps my three other caps are fine. If they are fine then I can just get this kit instead... but again if I get two of these it's the same cost as the Ventures:

Dennysdriveshaft.com has good prices.

Spicer only imo. 4 wheel parts used to have the lowest prices I've found. Just checked. Not anymore. But, If you go in or call in and talk to a sales guy, all they have to do is type in "kingpin" and it will populate in the invoice for them. Then just add the pin itself 37302. Obviously times 2 for everything.

Then Spl55-3x for shaft joints.

Spindle bearing kits 700014

Lower bearing caps 37299

Tube seals 36487 you can do new ford seals if you want. Pretty sure they are 2019816. Research that.

Pinion seal 42449

looking good on the tear down .

leave them upper king pins in and run them by the looks .

hope you marked the position l/r and clocked for them shims leaning against the spindles were they mate to the knuckle . those are a aftermarket shim used for alignment to bring the front end back in spec . if you didnt mark them then i would NOT put them back in as if you do not get them correct they will make it a lot worse if you get them wrong . someone did a lot of work to get them in there . most places wont do them or customer spend the money .

Thanks man, and thanks for providing feedback on the kingpins. I'll run them as-is.

Regarding those shims, I did not mark them... I might have gotten lucky though. There is a bunch of dirt on them and you can sorta see where they were against the knuckle:

you did get lucky .

line them up and see how you can match them up to the dirt / grease on the knuckles and spindles now before clean up . then mark them l/r and knuckle / spindle faces .

A little late now, but this is my new favorite tool for remove rod ends.

Hey all, I haven't made much progress since my last post. I still need to get the lower kingpin races out of the C. Then I need to clean everything and figure out exactly which pieces I want to buy / replace.

I don't own any punches... do you guys think it is worth it for me to buy some to help get the races out? I tried using a flat head screwdriver and went right through the passenger side race.

A buddy came over today to do some work on his Cherokee. I snuck away for a little bit to clean the Cs.

That passenger side cup + race is NOT coming out, this axle is wearing me out!!

I am going to be back at it most nights this week. Going to just keep hammering away and hitting it with PB Blaster.

Take the pin out and hit it with a long punch through the top hole of the C.
It's just a bearing race. Do you have a race punch or are you using a flathead screwdriver? Lol

I am afraid to take the upper kingpin out because of its torque spec. I don't have the means to get it back in at 500-600 ft lbs.

I don't have a race punch, I'm using a flathead screwdriver (or a metal chisel). It's rough lol

Now might be a good time to snag a 12" race punch. It's really useful on the wheel hubs as well.

you do NOT need to take the king pin out .

get a good bite with a real chissle or punch and wack it . go side to side she will come out . trust use :deal:

Tonight was a good night.

First off, you guys were right - the races came out without as much effort as I thought they would need. After my last post I hit 'em with PB Blaster and tonight they were very agreeable. Perhaps ten to fifteen smacks each and they were out.

So, I am officially done with demo on this axle. Happy to be able to say that. This means it is cleaning time. I have some old regular gasoline sitting in my garage, can I use that instead of diesel? Figured it would do the job okay but thought I would ask.

Also, I took some photos of my Cs on both driver side and passenger side. I knicked them in a few places and wanted to show you guys in case anything looks jacked. Most all of the damage is pretty small.

Here is a pic dump:

Anything you knicked, just deburr and shave any high spot and you will be fine
