1989 Crew Cab Tow Rig Build

How’s that 6.2 radiator working for you? I have the exact same truck except mine has the sm465 and 454, starting my build now trying to get all my ducks in a row with the small stuff.

Been working great. Keeps the 8.1 nice and cool. Even when towing it rarely gets up over 180*

After fighting with big projects all the time the occasional small details and clean up items are always a good break.

Truck is looking good

Thanks!

I did just bolt something on the front of this truck today. After a 20% off and a gift card that was given to me, I paid $239 out the door, haha. These winch’s really arn’t that bad. My brother and dad both have one, and have had them for years with no issues. So since it was so cheap, I said why not.

I would have guessed they wouldn't do the 20% off on winches. I know generators aren't covered.

They don't do a discount on sale items.
But the badland winches are ok with the discount coupon, you end up with the sale price either way.
I got the 10k before they had the 12k.
I paid $269
I might get the 12k for the crew cab but not buying until I am ready for it

Yeah I have seen a few torture tests of winches and those Badlands ones do really well for being cheap HF crap.

I love mine, have my 12k on a receiver mount and the 9k on the front of my jeep. The 12k has been through a ton of abuse and still works great. Did Have to take it apart and lube the gears a year ago but it sat outside alot too

Yeah, both my dad and brother have theirs on a receiver hitch too. It really isn't that bad of a winch at all. My brother uses the crap outta his all the time and it's still running. For how cheap it is, it's actually pretty good.

I will say, I feel like HF has stepped their game up a bit more on some of their stuff. They offer some items now that actually are not that bad but still are cheaper than anyone else in the market

I like the way you mounted your winch too. Out front is the old school way. I plan to mount a winch the same way with a giant winch bumper. I have one of these humongous old Desert Dynamics winch I want to rebuild, and mount it the same way you did.

Just got back from a long weekend in Moab with my kids and my brothers family. We did Moab a bit different this go around than what we normally do. This time instead of hauling the crawler over, we took the dirt bikes instead. This was one of the first times I've ever ridden dirt bikes in Moab and it was a blast. I loaded up the camper in the crew cab and showed up real late on Wednesday night, then on Thursday morning we took all the kids to Arches National Park, then Thursday afternoon we took them for a ride to Tusher Tunnel (which was really cool). On Friday we rode out to Gemini Bridges and spent most of the day there. On Saturday, my brother and I went by our selves and let the kids play at camp and we went and rode up Metal Masher, then I drove home Sunday (yesterday). Moab never disappoints, even if only on 2 wheels instead of 4

This was right before we left Moab on Sunday with the new boat I bought off my brother hooked up to the crew cab (this was the main reason why we did this trip, to pick up the boat). The 8.1 ran flawlessly the whole time. I averaged 8-9 mpg's pretty much the whole time, which is what I was expecting since the camper was filled to the gills with bikes and gear, plus towing a boat that isn't necessarily light either. But it towed great. No lack of power the whole time

That's badass. With the camper and a boat and still getting 8-9 mpg. Pretty consistent with the 22,000 pound gvw rv's we dealt with at workhorse. Gotta love the 8.1.

Looks like a fun trip.

In some of those pics above you can see my old silver 96 K2500 truck I sold my brother that has the Vortec 7.4/4l80e with 4.10's (I actually miss that truck). That truck gets the same exact gas mileage towing as my 8.1, but the 8.1 has noticeably more power (both motors have tunes on the ECM by Team 208 Motorsports too). So to still get close to 10 mpg's towing and have power to spare, plus the reliability of LS and crazy easy/cheap to work on...I couldn't ask for more.

There's a pretty steep (short, but steep) pass on the Utah side right before you get to the Idaho boarder called Rattlesnake pass, then there is another pass that isn't as steep, but relatively long uphill on the Idaho side of the same highway called Sweetzer pass (granted neither are as bad as Loveland or Vail pass, but still nothing to shake a stick at while towing), and I just put the NV4500 in 4th and let it sing up both of those...never dropped below 65, and I didn't feel like I was really pushing it too hard either. Again, couldn't be happier.

Oh, I also got to meet @Truckman4life on my way home to sell him my dually hubs I swapped off the ford d60 I swapped into my suburban. He was nice enough to come meet me off the highway. It was cool to meet, even if it was breif

Good to meet you too! Thanks for bringing those down. I'll have to make it to Blazer Bash to check out your truck when there is more time but it was looking pretty good all loaded up.

Idk how I missed this one. I forkin love this truck!
