1989 Crew Cab Tow Rig Build

How hard was it to install that AA adapter for your transmission to transfer case. About to order the kit and it was stating you had get new input and bearings. Or citing the tail shaft.

Sorry for the late reply to this, but the AA adapter was a breeze to install. Literally all it really is, is a spacer between the tranny and t-case, nothing special there. I'm not sure where you're reading that. Are you installing on an NV4500 to go to a long input round pattern NP205?

I believe I was looking under the options tab. https://www.advanceadapters.com/pro...bolt-pattern-transfer-case-adapter-replth400/ I have the same truck as you except I have the 454 and sm465. About the place the motor and all in and wanted to be sure this is the kit I needed

Yeah, that one is different than the one I got. My truck was equipped originally with a TH400 to a long input 32-spline 6-bolt round pattern 205. That kit is designed for a figure-8 pattern 205, and that one looks to also replace the rear housing of the NV4500 too. The reason why it talks about the input bearing in the options section is because most SM465's out there were either course 10-splines, or 27 spline outputs (TH350 was 27 spline outputs too). So odds are if that's what you're replacing, you will need to replace the input bearing on the NP205 to the larger bearing and also replace the input of the 205 to 32-spline. I guess you need to see what SM465/205 combo you have.

Mine was literally just a spacer that went between the NV4500 and NP205. I could have just bolted my 205 to the back of the NV4500 if I would have swapped my long input for a short input on the 205, but when I priced the cost of parts to change the input and do the tear down to swap the inputs, it was more expensive than just buying the spacer from Advanced Adapters and not messing with either the tranny or tcase. So for me it was a no brainer.

Sounds like your scenario is a bit different

I was actually on Facebook today and I saw the picture of the crew cab rescuing your daily driver. I have to say after following this building thread, the SAS build, and your K5 build I was EXTREMELY disappointed by your daily driver. Yes I saw all your excuses, but you can do better. Which I think you know and that's why you didn't post that picture here on CK5.....

:haha:
But I'm glad I saw the FB post so I could come here and give you a bunch of crap..... :saweet:

I'll post it here...no shame on my end. This dumb jeep has been one of the best daily drivers I've ever had. Bought it in 2012 for $3500, and this was actually the very first time since I bought it that I've had it leave me on the side of the road and had to go pick it up. I've put over 100k miles on it myself and it has 246k on the clock right now. It has the 5-speed manual in it and it gets 20 mpg's no matter if on the highway or in stop/go traffic. A/C blows cold, heat always works great...what more could you want out of a daily commuter for cheaper?

This dumb jeep owes me nothing. I've got my money out of this thing plus some. I told my wife, each extra mile I get out of this thing until it completely craps out is a cherry on top for my investment ;)

However, I will give it to you, I have been thinking lately about what I want to do for a different daily driver when the jeep is gone....I have thought about picking up a cleaner K5 and doing a 5.3/4l60e swap, I've thought about getting a 90's 2-door Tahoe for the next daily driver, I've thought about getting a 98-02 6-speed z28 or SS Camaro as a daily driver....

I've thought about a lot...but none of that is gonna happen until the jeep has been run into the ground.

Oh, and by the way, it was $50 in parts and 1.5 hrs of my time to get the Jeep back up and running :rotfl:. And you better believe I drove it to work this morning, haha

This is the only thing I can come up with..... :sign19: For both of you.

I actually did think you were driving the SAS rig.

I could daily the SAS suburban right now if I wanted, but don't have too. Plus, my wife and I do have fairly lengthy commutes. About 28 miles one way for both of us. So no need to drive the lifted, SAS'd, BBC suburban when I have a little jeep that gets 20 mpg's ;)

If it were me, I'd rather spend the extra $20 a week to drive the SAS'd BBC suburban.
When I was in the middle east I had plenty of cars that got great mileage, I chose to run my Chevy conversion van, I was even almost done with the 4x4 conversion so it would be the only vehicle I needed. But there distances are short and parking wasn't an issue.
Here I have a vehicle for every occasion because fuel becomes a big budget when you put the miles I do and finding parking here in California is a haste. I have 4 cars and a motorcycle registered and insured plus the big rig.

There are times I don't drive the crew cab because parking will be a pain.

This is also a factor since I work in Downtown Boise and park in a parking structure. It can be done to park both my crew cab or my suburban in the structure, but it sucks, especially during busy times. I can even fit the jeep in a compact spot when parking gets scarce in the structure, haha.

I guess I've always just looked differently at daily commuter cars. I could care less about what I drive day in and day out. The cheapest and crappiest car I can make work to be somewhat dependable to get me back and forth to work, the better. I like to keep my project type vehicles around for the long haul, so I don't tend to put any more miles on them than I need to. It's kinda like each vehicle I have is for a purpose. The crew cab is meant to tow, so it rarely comes out of the shop unless I need to tow something. My blazer is meant to wheel, so it doesn't even move until I'm gonna go wheeling. The suburban is more of a dual purpose rig for slight wheeling/camping stuff, but also doubles as a backup commuter if either my jeep or my wife's Yukon goes down for maintenance. I lately have been using the burban more as a weekend vehicle to tow my boat to have fun with the family, or go to the drag strip, or go fishing, or whatever.

When I was commuting a lot 2-3hrs a day or more. I couldn't do just bare bones daily. If I was gonna spend that much time some place sitting in traffic it had to be something I could stand to deal with.

I tried the daily "beater" but it didn't stick. I like, no more like love, driving places. So it's all about the experience for me, and I've gotta drive something I enjoy. My commute is about 30 minutes each way.

I also like giving Steve heck. As a side benefit Keith - my second favorite person to harass - is chiming in I get to give him heck too.

Sorry for hecking up your thread Steve....
