1989 Crew Cab Tow Rig Build

I have some questions about your fuel tank setup from back in this post: https://ck5.com/forums/threads/1989-crew-cab-tow-rig-build.323756/page-13#post-3649001. I may be going a similar route if I'm going to run FiTech type setup.

What did you use to flare the lines on the sender?

I found a post in another forum where they used compression style fittings, any reason you didn't go that route?

Won't there be a problem with disconnecting the overfill line from the primary tank to use for the fill from the aux tank?

Hey, sorry for the late response, just got back in town from hunting last night.

To flare the lines, I just used a normal flaring tool kit you can buy anywhere for cheap. I've seen others who used the compression style fitting too...they work fine as well, but I decided to go the route I did because of the fuel lines I chose (the aftermarket flexible braided stainless steel lines) along with the hose ends and fitting I used. It was just easier to use the parts I did on the sender to work with the hoses/fittings.

Now, I will say, if you do decide to go the route I did, I would suggest finding another sending unit that has longer ports that extend a little ways off the sending unit like the one I have linked here:
http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=972608&cc=1061895&jsn=544
(you can see that the ports extend a lot farther out than a normal sending unit)

The reason why is cause from the pictures I posted before, that setup didn't actually work. The only way I was able to get the flaring tool onto the tubes to flare them was to bend the tubes straight up, flare the line, and then bend them back down. But when I did that it cause a small hairline crack on the bend of the tubes and it leaked. With the sending unit I linked above, the tubes are long enough you just have to cut off the little ends, slip the nuts and sleeves on there, and flare it and your done. And it's been working fine sense (even though the 8.1 isn't running, the pump has cycled and ran multiple times while trying to get it so start up and no leaks at all).

I hope that all makes sense...if not, just give me a call and I can try to explain it over the phone

I figured you were out hunting. :wink1: So in the meantime I did some research and it looks like a TBI sender from an 87 K5 will fit my 20 gallon tank and it already has flare, more correctly o-ring, fittings.

I like this setup because it provides an additional overflow port on the sender for running a feed line from the other tank.

The only difficulty I see is I would like the hi pressure pump in the passenger tank and the lines on that sender aren't orientated the best for that.

Perfect! That sending will work really good and you are correct, then you can run that feed line to that extra port for the storage tank and be done. It will be a bit easier since now all you need are the adapters @skunked has provided. If I ever have to replace my sending unit on my high pressure feed the motor tank, I may just go that route....but that will probably be a long time now that it's all working, haha

Unless that's why the truck won't start.......

I just wish it was easier to get my bed off like you did yours. I hate dropping the tanks. Although if I'm ditching the tank selector valve, that'll make it a little easier on that side.

Still doing some reading on timer or delay relays. So I can turn the aux pump on to transfer fuel and if I forget to turn it off it will stop on its own. I wish there was a way to wire something that uses the fuel level signal. Or I just need to not run it if I'm not in the truck. Use a bright light like you mentioned.

Nah, we have confirmed I'm getting 58 psi or so while prime and cranking with no leaks...so it's not the pump or lines at all....could be the injectors. I will probably be checking that soon too.

I hear ya. I'm sure there is a fool proof way to do it, but I haven't figured it out yet. Maybe after the truck is running and been driving for a while I could look into redoing the transfer pump thing, but for the time being, a separate toggle switch (with a cool red light on it :D) and a little separate gauge is all I could come up with

Separate fuel gauge? Hadn't thought about needing that. Will need one for each without the valve.

Yep, so the factory gauge cluster fuel gauge will be on the feed the motor tank, and then I have a small aftermarket fuel gauge that will be hooked up to the storage tank on a small mount next to my toggle switch. So when I turn the toggle switch on to transfer fuel, I will be able to watch the aftermarket gauge go down as I watch the factory gauge go up :thumb:

Have you looked at gauges yet? Curious how small you can find.

So, any word on your Howell stuff and why no runny?

Yes, they tested both my harness and my computer multiple times and were on the phone with me over and over again and they couldn't find anything...everything was working and functioning perfectly on both harness and computer from their end...so it's being sent back to me right now.

It's getting frustrating to say the least, but I won't have time to get it running before we move. My wife and I are moving to Boise, ID most likely at the end of November/early December...so it will have to be finished after we move up there. My wife got a job offer up there that we couldn't refuse, I have a few interviews for new positions up there this week too. We have wanted to move back there for a while now. We needed to get a bigger house now that we have 3 kids anyways, but everything in CO (at least in and around the Denver area) is so freaking expensive it made us think we should look outside the state...so ID here we come!!

Yeah, I'm curious as well.

Yes, I already have the guage...I purchased it a while ago. I can't remember where I got it from, but it's very similar to this one:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/atm-4319

However I didn't pay that price...I think mine was only $30-$40 or something like that. It's just a normal little small gauge that you would see for an aftermarket temp or voltage gauge. If I have some time in the next couple weeks, I may try to finish that up along with other small misc wiring things while I wait for my harness to get back to me.

Back to ID? Is that where you're from?

Too bad they didn't find something wrong with the harness, I'm sure it would be nice to have it running and towing for the move.

Good luck with the move.

I went to college in ID and spent a few years in the Boise area, and my wife grew up in SE Idaho, so she has a lot of family there. I've always wanted to move back there and to be honest, CO is starting to piss me off. Too many people moving in and way, way to expensive to live here anymore in my opinion. So when this opportunity popped up, we decided to jump on it.

Yeah, would have been nice to use this truck for the move, but we have already worked out how I'm going to get this truck and my blazer over there...should work out good. We will probably just rent a house (big enough to house all my crap) for the meantime until we find where we want to buy....we really want to purchase property with a shop this go around!!

My Grandma lives in Meridian, I try to get up there once a year to see her.

Good luck with the move, sounds like a great move for your family.

Meridian is probably where we will rent a house for the time being as my wife will be working in the hospital in downtown Boise and how things are looking I will probably either be in Boise working or the surrounding areas. If you come up, let me know and we can grab lunch or something like that.

Yeah, we are really excited. It's a real smart move financially for us. We will make a pretty big chunk of cash selling our home here to throw down on some property up there which is obviously a heck of a lot cheaper than here.

Meridian is better than Boise. I will come up and say halloo when I'm up. I head up to Joshes in Caldwell at least a couple times a year

will do :thumb:

We rent my Grandmas house in Meridian, it's pretty good rental market up there.

Yeah, I like Meridian, I know some people who live there right now. Please do stop by when you do. I've been chatting with Josh about this 8.1 problem off and on...maybe I can get some assistance from him on this thing to get it fired up once I get up there :sign22:......:D

You are correct from what I'm seeing, :thumb:
