1990 K5 Build ( Ol' Blue ) : Rocker rust...

Were you talking about using the rear u-bolt spring plates on the front axle?

Martin

Yea i was thinking of seeing if i could use the diy ones from the rear up front, and then order new ones for the rear 14bolt going in

So I went over to Nick's this morning to see what I could help with. slinging a 10 bolt under a truck is such a pleasure with two guys vs. trying to do it alone. Took us 15 minutes and we were here:

Nick and I tightened everything up, then backed off the jam nuts for the tie rod. With the tires off we clamped some straight edges to the rotors and ballparked the toe-in. Next up was to get the tires on and dial it in better with weight on the tires. First up was getting a nice scribe mark on the tires...starting with a skiff of high speed tire paint. :D

I rotated the tires while Nick ran the rattle can. I made up this easy tire scribe using a long chisel, a jack stand and a clamp. I did sharpen one corner of the chisel a little more.

Then I had Nick slowly rotate the tire as I fed my little fixture into it until the chisel tip just made contact. The end resut is this:

Now we have a deadly accurate line to measure to front and rear. Since we ballparked it already we checked where the toe was at with the weight on the tires...slightly more than 1/4" toed in. I had Nick rotate the tie rod out 1/4 turn, then we rolled the truck back and then forward again. We re-checked and the toe is a hair under 3/16" toed in. Tighten the jam nuts and good to go. The paint will wear off in a few blocks...

Nick is going to install his inner fenders and stuff, then get his rig turned around so he can work on installing the 6 lug SF 14. Overall a good visual progress day!

Today i tackled putting the ten bolt under the truck, as trusty put up on this thread. Him coming to help today, was a huge help, and it would have been a hassle alone. It gave me a great start on the day!!. Plus his trick to align the tires was a great thing to put in the ol knowledge bank! I can say without his help, and that of the members on here, this truck would not be even close to what it is, so a big THANKS to trusty, and everyone on this site! I am merely a padawan in a sea of K5 jedi's..

After we got the axle in, roughed up the toe-in, and ubolts tight. I could get to tightening up all the loose ends, and putting the cotters in.

I noticed the gaps on these chitty inners were a bit much to bare on the double walled areas, i had some rubber rock guard laying around, and thought id give it a try. I also wanted to give these a coat of paint while i had them laying here. I wished i would have seen these before buying them.. i may have shopped around more...

After all that was done, i figured i would get the front completely done, before starting on the 14B. So its not a back, and forth situation, like it usually is for me in the garage.:deal: So i started to fit up the inner fenders. They fit pretty good besides the passenger side inner body mount didn't line up but i will get back at it tomorrow, I was told to try jacking up the body mount near it and maybe it would bring it to alignment. The drivers side fit fine, I meant to measure the distance, from mount to mount on the inner fenders to see if it may just be a **** up with the fenders..?

There is 3 square holes in the pass. side inner. I figured they were for the reservoir tank but once i got the tank in there... they came nowhere close to lining up.. Anyone know what they might be for??

I marked up the holes for my tank and drilled them out to make mine work. Also got the battery tray back in.

Try jacking under the core support a little. I had to do that to get my inners to line up properly and all the bolt holes to line up.

Im hoping to splurge on a red top for the long drive as this battery has been through me finding the short in my tach, and i don't know what kind of life its got left... we'll see if i owe at tax time or not...

I also got these random ( relays..? ) screwed back down.. and got the alarm horn cut out as i never use it anyway because a ****ing lawn mower sets the thing off. I wish i knew what i could cut the hell out of here...

Thats as far as i got before i started fuggin around with the flux welder trusty to gave me when we were cleaning out his garage. welding old brake parts together was great once i got the wire feed working and the tip cleaned up. Once i get a a welding helmet i will be able to actually see what I'm doing and get it dialled in more. I plan to use it for the rust repair on the tub floor..:waytogo::weld:

I will loosen the bolts tomorrow on that side and try that for sure!

The rear axle has four equal sized u-bolts.

The front axle has different sized u-bolts for the u-bolt that goes around the pumpkin.

I was only going to use the plates, not reuse the ubolts. I like the look of the cast plates up front though, going to keep them. I ordered new u bolts and plates for the swap.

You would have a hell of a time squeezing the top of the u-bolt at the pumpkin together to fit into the narrower spacing of the incorrect spring plate.

Seeing as you are keeping the stock cast plates, you don't have to worry.

Looking good Nick!

Thanks! its been some long ass days in the garage, but its great doing this alone, in the sense that i am able to learn every step, encounter, and fix problems as i go. I couldn't let those axles i got from you go to waste!!

ohh ok, i see what you mean now. Sorry i misunderstood.

The day started off as a easy day.. putz around the garage, clean up the disaster that was starting, grease the front end, and maybe do the front driveshaft u joints... Well once i started with cleaning i got to moving things around, i basically said screw that, and got back into er.

I ordered my rear axle parts from ORD last night ( perches, bolts, plates ). I was going to order from DIY but the online section will not let you choose Canada as an option.. and i didn't want to wait a few days to get an answer about it, as i need this all done ASAP! I hummed and hawed about doing the rear shackles also, but didn't pull the trigger on it. Not sure if i need the shorter 4 inch or longer 6 inch ones.. I may still do this while the axle is out if money is right come tax time.. But for now i just kept working on what needed to be done. I got the 9.5 14b up on stands and wire brushed it a bit around the welds to get a better look. Then out came the grinder to start removing the spring perches, shock tabs and the other pad thats on there. i tried my best to cut it all off right above the welds, as id rather grind down welds, than plug weld cuts into the axles. it worked out well but in one area i nicked into the axle housing, and had to weld a little bead in there and grind it down. Thankfully i got that flux welder rene gave me working better.

I got them grinder down quite a bit, then cold chisel and hammered them off, as to try and save as much potential axle damage as possible.

It was kinda cold as i started to lay on the floor to disconnect the rear end and drop the 10 bolt gov bomb out of there. So i fired up the poor mans garage heater.. Courtesy of a welder at my last job not wanting it anymore. I got the rear drive shaft disconnected. I will be upgrading it to a thicker walled shaft, as well as a 1350 joint, as to eliminate the bastard u joint in the rear. Not to mention being able to get a perfect drive shaft angle since it hasn't been the greatest since the lift went in. On a good note. i may be able to save my new SS brake lines as they are the same thread size.. not sure if i can manipulate them around the new application or not. Worst case i have the stock ones still.

Im not too sure what I'm doing with the parking cables yet, as this does need to pass an out of province inspection come july. So i just disconnected them from the ten bolt and left them attached for now.

I also finally got around to putting some real hose clamps on the new fuel lines.. since they do run awful close to the exhaust..

i have some things to keep me busy until the parts show up for the rear. But i think the worst of it is over now:woot:

You factory 10b parking brake cables will bolt right into the 14sf

At least you didn't waste your day off! Nice job on everything so far!

Yea i definitely didn't waste my day off, or atleast id like to think i didn't! On top of it all. the garage is looking a lot cleaner than it was. I think my ears are still ringing from the grinder... ear plugs would be a good thing to buy next time!
