No I mean like the one in my 66 you can see in the picture below. Its bolted to the bottom of the dash.

ah, got it. yeah, if I could still return this unit and get something else, I'd definitely be looking into it. As it is, I'm $2k in the hole on this, so I gotta make it work.

If you do decide to return it, I may be interested in it instead. Everywhere is out of stock. I'm running out of things to do before I need it on hand...so I don't run into the issues you're having.

Ash, what blocks you from moving it left and away from the cage bar? Is it an interference with the cowl? firewall hump for transmission ?

I'm not sure what you're asking.

Yeah... I took the night off in order to come to grips with how much work this is going to be. :(

I'll start pulling stuff apart after work tonight.

That zr2 belongs to @blazenwhip
Don’t see him on here too much anymore, but he’s a good dude
Just curious, seems to be mostly stock other than the larger tires and flares, and handling the trails very good.

Mostly it's the hard lines coming out of the back of the air box. There is plenty of room for the air box to move to the left, but then I would need to have the hard lines redesigned, and the brackets rebuilt. It's all "doable", but in the end every option brought the suck. I decided that the least painful option was to redo the part that I knew I had the tools for.

The progress from last night.

Since I first installed the cage, I wanted to make it so that I could remove it without pulling the dash, so first step in the process was cutting off the A-pillars and installing some disconnects.
Tonight I'll get the air box fully installed and start modifying the passenger A-pillar.

Got the A/C all installed and it's working very well so far.

The cage modifications worked out great.

It fits nice and tight with about 1/8" clearance around the blower motor. I added a disconnect up behind the dash so that I can pull that tube if I need to pull out that assembly.

Nice final result, Josh.

Makes me happy to see a sucessful VintageAir setup in a 1st Gen. :waytogo:

It seems to be a nice unit.

Blows good and strong but the blower is a little louder than I had hoped. No outside air intake might be part of that. Also, no floor vents. Probably not a big deal, but I was surprised.

My restomod air has floor vents. The vintage air units I have installed all had them also.

LOL....

Intake noise through the squirrel cage or is it just the velocity of air coming out of the the vents themselves?

When you have nothing better to do, you could play around with an intake / muffler on that intake fan to attenuate the noise if that's where it's from.

I bought a "mock up" Gen-IV unit from VintageAir (still in the box) so that I could play around with the firewall mount as my firewall is built/rebuilt. Would love to mount it higher than stock (if possible) but from what I can see in your photos the limiting factor is the lower cowl where the rainwater collects?

I wonder if it's just a quirk of the 67-72 body style and where they have the unit installed. It is pushed as far to the PS as possible. It does seem like it would have been simple enough to just run another vent line.

I need to run it more to see exactly where the noise is coming from. It is the squirrel cage, but I wasn't able to check if it's intake noise, or the fan motor itself.

I think you will have room to move it up "a bit", but yeah, the inner cowl will be the limit. I bet you could move it up an inch or so with custom mounting brackets, but I didn't really look at that area that closely.

What part number was your kit?
Looks like #751170

according to the website it includes "Additional features include variable blower speed and dash/floor/defrost blend."

I wonder if a floor vent was extra and I missed that option?

@ktmoutfront You got me thinking, so I called Vintage Air and it does actually have floor vents. He said they are on the firewall side of the main unit, so I just didn't see them with the unit installed. Since I am using the stock controls (with their cable converters) it wasn't obvious to me where to put the slider for floor vents. When I get a second, I'll go out and play with it.

That might explain the extra fan noise too.... If you've got vents completely blocked off that are supposed to be operational, the fan motor is probably going to be struggling to push air out the remaining vents.

Interested to see what your investigation reveals.
