'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

Anyone know what the thing is in the pic (on left) below? I know it kinda looks like an alternator, power steering pump, etc. bracket, but based on which bench I found it on, I think it came from somewhere in the cab. Obviously not 100% sure since I don't even know what it is......

It's a support strap for your brake booster. Bolts to the back of the booster and to a bolt sticking out of the firewall.

Ran the windshield washer tubing, vacuum gauge line, oil pressure gauge line, tach wire, etc. through new rubber grommets. Finished up the steering - no more steering by manhandling the tires side to side! I could put the dash cluster in now, but I have a few questions for Painless before I close it up. Hopefully they are open tomorrow....I have to work, so maybe......I'd like to finish the dash on Tuesday.

I have to consult my accountant (wife) tonight to see if it's cool if I drop $12-1500 and get the intake, carb, distributor, peripherals.........I want that engine done!

Does anyone know what the nomenclature is for the rubber "tray" thing that the windshield washer tubing runs through in pic below? I have spent an hour on LMC and The Truck Shop's websites and cannot find it............

Perfect! Thank you Ekajkrats.

Any guesses on this one? The 'Tachomoter Conversion kit' came with this wire (below) with connectors and a pigtail. The directions say to hook that end to the fuse lock receptacle labeled 'IGN UNFUSED.' Fuseblock has no such receptacle. I called Painless today and the guy said, "It just needs to go to a terminal marked accessory." Nice guy, I didn't want to argue with him, but if that's the case, why the heavy gauge of wire, the pigtail, and the connectors?
I appreciate any thoughts.

I might have figured it out. I looked up the part number on the bag the Tachometer Conversion kit came in and it's this: https://www.kmstools.com/counterpart-automotive-tachometer-wire-harness-1967-72-chev-gmc-truck-16635 which is not a Painless product. My guess is that they include that tach kit to help out guys who are putting in HEI distributors, but the application is broad in nature. Therefore, I would assume that I simply cut the wire before the pigtail, put a connector on it, and plug it into a open Accessory spot on the fuseblock. The only thing that still concerns me is the gauge of that wire, it's pretty meaty. Is my concern valid?

Did the tach kit come with your new gauges? Or with the painless kit. Sounds like the gauges.

I think you are right about the HEI conversions. If I recall mine had a big wire like that. And the pigtail was probably to still be able to run another accessory off the same ignition unfused since there are limited places in the original fuse block.

A larger gauge wire is only going to make for less resistance, I assume? Modern tachs aren't pulling many amps, and probably not yours either. My thinking is that a thicker wire won't be any worse for you tach. Are you wanting to switch to a smaller gauge wire?

Ekajkrats - My apologies, it came with the gauges, not the Painless Wiring harness. Your explanation of the reason for the pigtail makes perfect sense. I don't think I'll have that problem as the Painless harness includes pretty much any accessory you could possibly have/install. Hell, at this point I will only be using about half the wires, but it is nice having everything else pre-wired just in case I ever want power windows and such.

I don't want to switch to a smaller wire, I was just concerned that the circuit needed the larger wire, was pulling more current, and that might mean something special about it......I don't know, I guess I am just paranoid. I believe my best option is to simply cut off the connector, put on one of the supplied Painless blade connectors, plug into Accessory on fuseblock and carry on.

Thank you for the help, I really appreciate it.

Thinking back, the Painless Tech Support guy was a Saint! He probably knew damn well that the Tach conversion did not come with the kit (as I was telling him), but instead of telling me I was a moron, he kindly explained that it just needed unfused power.......

Nothing like spending an hour getting the push rod connected to the brake pedal only to look and think, "I wonder if I should paint the booster?"

That's funny, wife just came out to the shop to put a few of her Yuppie beers in the shop fridge (we're having people over tonight - I have a perfect view of the fireworks from my back patio......work is gonna hurt tomorrow.....). Anyway, I was standing there looking at it and she says, "That's really nice, why are you staring at it?" My wife knows as much about cars (and cares about my Blazer) as much as I do snow blindness in cats, but still......funny that the first two people said leave it as is.......I'm sure I will get all kinds of input tonight.......friends just love to 'give tips.'

Oh, and more great news. Apparently wife set up some kind of slush fund account for vacations, and that paid for our DC/VA trip, meaning...........carb, intake, distributor, etc. - Fire When Ready! Now I just need the time (and patience) to sit at the computer and figure this all out......while I am at it, I may as well ask - any lessons learned regarding distributors that fit without banging the firewall? Hell, or if I should do some kinda MSD or whatever. Only reason that is even on my mind is hearing my buddy's '70 C10 start up.....one crank - it's roaring. Hell, if ANY of my vehicles started like that I'd be stoked.

Only advice I have is avoid all the msd stuff. Seems every post I read about I gnution trouble involves a bad MSD box.

HEI Distributor will fit without any clearance issue.

Thank you bp and Joe. I appreciate the info. Funny, every one of my buddies said to leave the booster unpainted. Tips I get from my buddies are usually along the lines of 'Why don't you put a Cummins engine in it', or 'You should cut the wheel wells so you can put on bigger tires.' Things like that.....it's just a group of guys standing around bsing and drinking beer while looking at a project.......all kinds of 'great ideas' are inevitable!

Got a shipping notification from DIY4X4 today, so I know my crossmember/engine mounts are on the way. Tomorrow I have a meeting near the shop that did my engine, so I plan to swing by and discuss the carb recommendation they gave vs. what some of you gave, distributor, etc. so that I can just make a damn decision and get that stuff on it's way to my shop.

Oh, and my buddy who recently bought the '70 C10 wants me to help him convert it to power brakes.......I'm like, "Dude, I am probably not the best guy for that......" I think they are starting to see my Blazer come together and think I know something.......shit, if not for you guys this thing would still be sitting in the shop with the front clip removed, and nothing else done. Honestly, I can't thank you all enough - this is the best source of info I could imagine. No way I could have done something like this without all of the incredible support you have provided.

Was looking for something yesterday, looked around and realized shop was a freakin mess - pretty much spent the weekend cleaning/organizing shop, Blazer parts, etc. came across the items in the pic and thought........
It was my buddy's annual Pig Roast weekend, so most of my weekend was consumed by that......shoot, butcher, clean - in the pit Friday night (AKA: drink beer till 3AM), Saturday about 150-200 people......drink beer till 3AM........some screwed up shit at one point last night - dude's drunk ass wife decides it's a good time to tell him she is "having an 'affair.'" WTF! At a pig roast? Ole boy is a big dude.....his arms are the size of my legs......I'd imagine some dude got his ass kicked today.

Nice work! Kind of hard to tell, do you have a plate on the outside of the frame behind the front spring hanger?

Thanks man. If this (below) is the area you are asking about, no. Was it somewhere else?
