'73 k5 Build - New Drivetrain - 350/3500/241/205

That's the same way I get to justify a lot of my tools. ;) And in both of our cases, we're right! :haha:

I had some time to weld yesterday, its not pretty in most spots but its not going anywhere. I was in a hurry to get back to work so I didn't get a picture. That might be a good thing though. I had to fill a few big gaps which got ugly.

Best educational tool yet.

Saw you yesterday welding so I know you got something done on the truck:haha:

I was gonna stop by but got sidetracked:woot:

Nice, that seems like a pretty cool little shop.

Well no progress on the truck recently, I did pick up a new dd/tow rig though, 2003 GMC 2500 6.0 manual 4x4. My little gocart '93 tercel served me well but it was time for an upgrade.

I have a week off school coming up soon so there will be some decent progress coming. Its been kicking my ass recently I am ready for a break.

Nice! I had a '94 Tercel, 4 door, red for a few years. :)

Its hard to beat 30mpg, but damn I hated that thing. I forgot to get a picture of the new DD, tomorrow

Little progress today, passenger side is almost done and the drivers box is out. The second went a lot quicker, I used more bfh. My sheet metal welding is getting better, still ugly though.

What do I do with the body mount? Leaning towards chopping it and capping it. This mount

When I did mine I cut a little out of the body mount and left it. You removed quite a bit...

I'd probably box it back together a little. Are you going to weld the sliders to the frame as well as the body?

I plan on tieing the cage to the slider then through poly bushings to the frame

Cut some plate for the bottom halves of the cage mounting plates, then drilled and installed 2 of 6.

Here is where the doubler fund went. It has a detroit in the rear which will end up in the k5 in the next few months.

Sliders are in, just need to brace and tie them to the cage/frame. Thinking I am going to just mount the cage to the body briefly so I can get a day or two of wheeling in. I have to get the knuckles braces and kingpins swapped first though.

Work has been really slow and I have school off this week so I have had some decent garage time. Stripped my front axle down and swapped out the kingpins. I am not sure who it was (Greg72 maybe?) but someone on here posted about cutting a relieve cut just above the knuckle in the kingpin cone, great technique. Using a lug nut and socket on a breaker bar they came out easy, dont know why I put off swapping them for so long.

While I had the knuckle off I decided to do some plating. I used 3/16's just because I had it laying around and cut out some rough pieces. Cleaned the knuckles up and preheated them to 500*F in the oven (the house still stinks) welded them on then a slow cool int he oven again.

Got the drivers side on and forgot to put in a lower seal so I get to rip it down again :doah:

Got both sides together right and the cage mostly mounted to the body. I still need to drill 4 holes in tricky spots but its getting there. I managed to break 2 bits before I gave up on the truck for the day and ran twine for my little hop garden. I have 3 growing this year, pretty cool plants and a cooler picture then a truck with 3 wheels on

I have been here 24 years its bound to show every so often. If it makes it better it should make some good beer:D

I believe miniwally suggested the relief cuts. Those knuckles look familiar, nice job. :)

Could have been, whoever it was though it works amazing. Thanks, I am pretty pleased with how they came out
