'73 k5 Build - New Drivetrain - 350/3500/241/205

Its back on all fours. Tied my front shock mounts to the bump stop mount too, still need to tie them to the top of the frame too.

Havent had much time to work on things recently but my tests are next week so I will get more garage time soon. Just a few more days of studying more then you would every want to know about beer.

I did get a chance to weld on all of the cage to frame bushing brackets last week and the fabricators sets showed up from Kert today. I also got some poly body mounts to replace the mismatched stuff currently on there

No pics of the truck, but my hops are starting to get tiny cones...

Tiny bit of progress and a question. Swapped in some poly body mounts today.

Is this spacer stock? Or did the PO put a 3" body lift on the front only?
IMG092.jpg

Either way its out now and I can actually see over the hood now.

The front cab mount was about about 1.5" taller then the poly replacements too

Started it up tonight and it was running like it was a low battery, checked it and got 10.3v at idle :doah:. Put new ends on my main ground wire cause they looked nasty and tried again with the same 10.3v with no load. Looks like it is time for some wiring fun

Looked around and from what I can tell that body mount spacer wasnt stock so the PO put a 3" body lift in the front only. Awesome.

Found the charging problem. The charge bulb blew so the alternator wasnt excited and therefor wasnt charging. Glad that was an easy fix.

Starting to look for a long block 350 to replace the current struggling carb to tbi swapped engine. Never really trusted the thing. Is it worth it for get a 96 to 2000 vortec block for the heads/roller cam? Or should I just stick with a tbi replacement? The vortec to tbi intake manifold is almost $400 on top of the price difference in the long blocks. Any recomended sources for long blocks? Or should I just stick with goodwrench stuff?

I would consider the roller cam for sure. The vortecs are good too, but I think there are better options available. What's your budget like?

I would love a 6.0, its pretty fun with the 4500 behind it in my dd. There are a few 5.3s of Craigslist With 3 wire hook ups for $1500. Guess I should look into it. Looking for simple and cheapish $1600, less would be nice but whatever I need to do to have a trustworthy engine

Little bit more progress. Put in a new brake booster and master cylinder.

Messing with a different color, thinking rustoleum leafy green satin.

New name...Jolly Green Giant?
Let me know if you want me to get you a case from Ace. Still get a discount just not mine...:haha:

I love that leafy green. Thats what i painted my cage originally and my diff covers. But the Yellow with the green looked like vomit,

My house mate told me it would look like a giant pea if i painted it all green so I guess Jolly Green Giant is fitting. I think it looks pretty cool with the flat black, hopefully not too puke like as I keep painting

Managed to get a quick sand and a second coat on the piece I started. Its turning into Colbys '73, I already had the cage, bumper and top now its kinda the same color too.

I have to have it drivable by the end of the month when we move across town so thats probably all that will get painted for a bit. On to the important things...

IMG100.jpg

Moved into a new house with no garage so progress has been slow as I rearrange my parents garage to fit all my stuff again. On the day before we had to be out of the old house I went to move the truck and had no clutch. Thought I had a stuck throwout bearing but it was just linkage stuff from the manual clutch and the PO's awesome front only body lift . Anyway got some new shoes somewhere along the line too, 37" old style MTR military take offs. They sit at the same height as my worn out 38.5" tsls
IMG105.jpg

No, I did get them through trailworthy though. I guess the special forces use MTRs not the MTs. I havent really had a chance to test them out, the only time I have driven on them was just across town. My tsls were pretty damn dry though so it nice to have something a little stickier. These actually chirp around corners instead of just kinda sliding . Hopefully I can get a test run on them before I pull it apart again for the doubler

$195 each plus the shipping. I guess they arent all that easy to get so trailworthy doesnt always have them. There is a guy on craigslist selling MTs that said he could get them and there are a few other places out there too

Starting to work on the 5 speed and doubler again. Finally ordered a intermediate shaft from ORD. Also got a clutch line made, square body hydro master fitting on one end and the new style quick connect on the other. Brought in the old fittings and they crimped a new line on for $40 even worked with the damn short end on the quick connect

IMG108.jpg

Also got the drivers side all painted up. Going to leave the hood and windshield frame black, think it will look cool and I dont really want to have to do the masking on it all
