Rear axle teardown

I got my C&C axle, and the 79 3/4 ton axle into the shop today to begin teardown.

I plan to use the diff out of the C&C, and put it in the 3/4t housing, with a Detroit in it.

Here's the two axles:

The C&C diff. 4.56 gears and open diff....I was thinking this thing had a gov/bomb in it. I was really pleased to find out it was open.

The 3/4t diff. open also.

Taking out the axleshafts:

Taking off the spindle nuts:
There is a locking ring first that must have the tab bent up/out of the indentation in the outer locking nut.

The you need to get the brake drum free somehow. These axles were sitting outside for a few years, and were absolutely a bitch to get the brakes loose from the drums. I ended up taking the pivot bolt at the top of the backing plate off, and pounding it in towards the drum. I beat the hell out of the adjuster wheel, and couldn't get it to budge. After pounding the pivot bolt through, and cutting off the brake shoe holding pins, the drum reluctantly came off with the shoes assembly inside the drum. I also had to slip the parking brake cable off the actuator lever inside the drum.

Glad thats done.

The 4.56 gears.
There is a part number, then the gear pinion/ring gear numbers (9/41), then the date code (8/84).

The empty housing, ready to go to the acid strippers (I'm doing this because this housing has rust inside of the axle tubes, and I want it cleaned up good):

And the pile of parts...

I'm really considering that now that I don't have to buy a set of gears for it. That and I'm working Thanksgiving and the day after for 3X.....$$$.

Next time try using a t-bar puller to pull the drum off. Works well, and very little cussing.

School me on the T bar puller. Does it use the spindle as a center support to leverage from?

Might not be the correct name, but that is what I have always heard them refered to as.

Thread to longer 1/2" bolts through the bar, into the drum, and put a spacer on the end of the spindle to push off. I just had to do this the other day.

Yep ok, just a regular puller then. But I mean this sucker was stuck on there. I was ready to torch the drum to break the bond of the shoes, but then just cutting the shoe hold on pins, and the pivot bolt loosened things up enough to get in between the drum and the backing plate. Then all I had to do was disconnect the parking brake cable.

My 3/4t housing is from a 2 wheel drive, and I want to change the shock mounts, as they hang low, and will just get destroyed.
So
1)Where do the 4wd mounts go?
2)Can I use the 2wd mounts and relocate for 4wd shocks?
3)What are some other options for shock mounts off the axle?

Can somebody throw up a pic or 2 or what you got.

:D i hear ya Dave...i look at all the badass rigs on here and try to duplicate some of the ideas.but them i realize we live in MICH and it's mostly mud.Mike did the same thing. Iroks SUCK in the mud!:haha:

diy4x has some really cool lower shock mounts that you can buy, very reasonable too. they are option with the inboarding kit thing, but would work in other ways.

mine are low on my 12 bolt.i think anywhere but stock should be cool Dave.the only dragging problem i have is the pigs.i just put 40 lbs in the tires yesterday.getting ready for the 21st.;)the bigger the tire, the less you drag. muddy trails mean ruts.mud pits are of coarse different.trails suck as you are only as good as the size you have.if someone had 44's before you???looky!stuck bigger n chit.

You can just cut the stock 2wd ones down so they dont hang below the tube.

You gonna throw disc's on it???

Yes I am, after fooking around with the drums, and all the hardware, it would probably cost as much to replace all that heavy stuff, as it would to go disc.

I still need to measure the C&C hubs to see if they will push the WMS out further than the SRW hubs.

Its all in the plan now.

i think c&c hubs will squeeze it in closer.

Thats what I wondered, Scott responded to my axle width thread
http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262461
saying that a Van axle would give me the extra width to match the D60 front. I get that, but still didn't know if the C&C hubs would move them out or in compared to the SRW hubs. I wasn't sure if the C&C hubs were mounted the same distance apart on the C&C housing as the SRW hubs were on the SRW housing.

So basically are the C&C hubs the same as the SRW hubs?

no C&C hubs are the same as dually hubs, and srw hubs are the same as van hubs. the van housing is just wider and the c&c housing is narrow.

CandC hubs are different then the SRW hubs. CandC will make your wms narrower than the SRW.

Good post Kert....I checked that out last night.
Also took some pics of my hubs today from the SRW (which I will be using)
and the C&C hubs.

I separated the hubs/drums/wheel studs yesterday. Nice to have access to a 30 ton press.

I'll add these to the metal recycle pile:

Got my housing from the strippers today, man I love how stuff comes back from them. Like new metal.
