It was a fun day up til they denied Luke entrance...the rules state:

Passengers must be protected by one or more of the following:

Steel top (doesn't seem to matter how flimsy it is though)
Roll bar behind the seats
Helmets for each passenger

The officer stated that Lukes K5 meets none of these criteria. It does seem like factory engineering and the fact that the passenger compartment is still stock didn't seem to make any difference in his interpretation of the rulebook.

If we had tried something else, like getting the kids in my truck then letting them hop back in his would have made him somewhat of a target then. best to avoid that I think.

oh and never once did I see them checking anyone for noise levels...just a sign that says any vehicle is subject to checks while out on the dunes.

Ive never, EVER, EVER, been checked for anything while in the dunes. Not exhaust (theres guys running open headers that drive in), and not for a roll bar if people are in the back with no helmates. The only thing the DNR look for that patrol in the dunes are dumbasses going the wrong way in the directional section, and people not wearing seat belts.

And really, what are they gonna do if they did catch ya? They may kick you out, but your not gonna get in big trouble if you say they let you in.... But what can I say, grandpa always told me ya gotta be a little bit crooked

helmates, cell mates, i'd rather not be in the back with any of them.

Specially one that carries a yoga mat around with him

I am regretting the decision to change Horton, but am sticking to my guns with the changes, had some buddies head out to our dunes this weekend.

Looks like fun guys

Looks like a fun time Dave, sorry to hear they wouldn't let Luke back in, bummer. It seems like saturday afternoon is when they are the strictest. That's when I got checked for noise on the way in, and that's when they blocked my friend for noise several times now, it's when you leave and try to get back in.

As for your truck cutting out, is some of Adam's K5 issue rubbing off on yours? Did the maiden get to close and catch something?

the maiden looks good in the sand! looks like a fun time all around.

Thats what i said when we bogged out on the way up test lol. But when he got bac and matted it, there seemed to be no problems

:waytogo: thanks man!

it happened 4-5 times out of the probably 100 full throttle blasts I made during the 4 days I was there. Felt more like an electrical shutoff to me, although I could pump the gas, and it felt like it would burn the squirt of fuel from the pump of the acc. then die again. I'm thinking it may have something to do with the rev limiter, as it seems to happen when I get it close to the 5K limiter setting.

5K rev limiter  Man your choking it! ha ha. It's pretty obvious when you hit the rev limiter of a 6AL, that telltale stuttering miss and sudden loss of power. Sometimes those rev limiters will engage 100 - 300 RPM early if the RPM is swinging up real fast. Its different when I hit the rev limiter with the EFI, no miss, just all the sudden nothing, it's like the engine suddenly quit for a moment, then roars back to life a split second later when the RPM drops back down enough.

this one is a Petronix unit, it does the random cylinder drop to control the rpm. works well, except I think it may have something to do with the cutting out of the ignition after it hits it.

yeah 5K should keep it safe.
the top end should be good for 6-6500, but the bottom end is cast, and 5500 is all my machinist recommended for that.
My cam is engineered for 1600-6000, but torque drops below 500lb ft. by 5000rpm.

so basically you should chip it at 5500 - 5700, but you are cutting it off around 4800 instead, wuss :p:

NOOOOOOOO. I should dial it to limit at 5K, which is what I did...I read the instructions and didn't listen to internet advice...

Decided to get the sand and debris from a trail ride out of it so I could drive it on the road without getting stuff blown in my face/eyes....that lead to washing it, and cleaning it out. Put 30# of air in the tires and went for a ride down the road to see how the hydro assist would feel at higher tire pressure, where the death wobble used to get really bad....drove dam good actually. need to tweak the tuning on the steering box a bit, but it was actually well behaved on the road at 50-60mph.

I've got mine at 5900, and the machinist that helped me told me to put it at 6500 :haha:. I've got a pretty similar set-up with the cast crank

We'll see about that, I haven't had a chance to beat on it to see how 6000 sounds

I know guys that do it at the drags, run cast 454's to 6K, seem to hold up ok, I don't remember anyone scattering their junk on the track...

I also am having what sounds like a bearing, or gear slack rattling in the t/c...not sure which one, but it does it in 2wd as well as 4wd...something else to take apart...:doah:

Excellent outcome

OK that's a good one Zim, I like it! :D But in this case there was no instructions except your machinist said 5500, and you chose 5000, which means your useable RPM is probably cutoff around 4800 and you are cutting yourself short. There is no reason that engine can't take 6k. I would chip it at 56 or 57. Yeah, your torque drops off, of course, its higher RPM, but where is your peak HP? I bet its above 4800, and what shift point does your average power become the highest, because it's not just where you shift, but what it drops down to after you shift. I have a cast crank too :p:

Glad your death wobble is gone, I'm sure thats a relief.

Heath again...no chips in this unit. its a dial type, peak hp was right at 5K w/ 460hp, and peak torque as built is at 3500 w/548, and 5000 seems to be enough...I'm not going for ET's with this tank:whistle:.

If I wanted more wheel speed I could change gears/ ranges/ remember I have a doubler, and 2:1 w the trans in 2nd (1.48:1) seems to work just right for the hills at the dunes....don't need to upshift or downshift...it just pulls all the way up.

And it really does go down the road better than I ever thought it would...30# in the worn TSL's, and it actually is pretty smooth, comparitively:rolleyes:.

I used 2:1 dave, (I don't have 4:1 but don't really need it for my truck), 2:1 works pretty well for the dunes with my 4.10 gears. I modified my governer to shift around 5500, so I just leave it in D and let it do it's thing.

And I don't have any chips or a dial either, I change it in the handheld screen. But I'm still going to say chip it and you're going to like it! :thumb:

Fwiw, I used to race my old truck at local mud bogs. That 454 had a cast crank, 2 bolt bottom end and I turned it to 6500-6800 regularly (once a month race with multiple passes + occasional wheeling). Knock on wood, that motor lasted 3 years and was healthy when I sold it. Point being, don't sweat 6k.

I also agree with Heath on the rev limiter, don't kill it while it's still making power. If it peaks around 5k then it's probably still making good numbers till around 5500. My new motor peaks a little over 4k but it still makes great numbers up to 5k, I plan to chip it around 5000-5200.
