'81 K5, "BlaZeus"- How to NOT build the ultimate budget K5; 3 & 4 link build

More blaze to goodness.. This is an excellent example of what to do..
Boxed the frame, and added tube cross members, not a lot of fluff, only where it really needs it.

If you were to make a rear frame that kicks up out of some 2x6 rectangular and slip that into place where you cut out, would add considerable strength and you then can dictate up travel..
One thing I am a bit perplexed about is how you felt there was not enough..
K5 blazers are unique because the frame kicks up in the rear unlike a truck where it is flat. Here is a pic with the stock bumps removed, and the axle stuffed in there, mind you the diff is touching the floor or very close so physically you are limited because your passenger buts have to go somewhere. This with a 35 inch tire is the absolute limit of what fits between the fenders with no trimming and no tubbing.. If you look close the gas tank is 3 inches lower than the bottom of the axle.. And the tire is more than halfway into the wheel well.. So if you needed more bump it would surprise me...

More to my point. Blazito didn't even loose the rear frame.. He just notched it 2 or three inches.. So basically what I am getting at is, it would be less work at this point and cheaper to stop and go find a junkyard frame.. Start fresh and do it right, trust me it's much less work ..

OH! thats why I had to cut the frame now i remember! to fit the coilovers. The coilover runs right through the floor where the frame used to be. :dunno::1zhelp::doah:

haha there is no way i would be able to put another frame under here, nor do I have the tools or resources to do so. I thought about it for a while cuz i bent my frame, but decided i would go "all trophy truck" and do a full tube frame deal.:surepal::o:screwy: Also, my entire front half engine cage is all tied in and connected to the frame. Thanks for the suggestion but i think i am just gonna have to run with what I got. Why can't i run tubing under the floor from the box end of the frame to the rear and add crossmembers and tie it to the cage above the floor?

You can, he was just pointing out that it's not going to save any weight, and putting a frame back in place would be easier.

Look at papa smurff build, you could do something like that, tie it up to the cage spread the load. Your going to have some tubes to fit. Fitment is extremely important.

This cage was a huge compromise but it was helped by the attached panels. We fully welded those. You can't see the roof structure very good but it was substantial. This thing seated 6 also the second ugliest cage I have ever built

This was only half ton here. When I put this pic up lots thought it was done.

Good example of door structure. This cage passed several tech inspections at different tracks.

Not perfect but this cage saved my life

No cage is perfect. But you gotta try to get as close as possible.
man i really wish i could just tear off everything and just build the cage and then add everything back on around it...but I'm trying to keep it CA street legal. :doah::1zhelp:

You could. I have seen a couple trucks where they build the tube structure. Cut the floor out of whatever and then just build a new floor.

Total tube structure. Full cab

If you watched it being built imho there is several things about that truck that are a total compromise or so overweight that it causes the truck to break from that.. He breaks a lot of parts granted from wheeling it hard, I think if he tried harder to keep it simple strong and light by using better materials instead of 1/4 and 3/8 plate every where it would be a lot lighter and less breakage would occur.. But again I'm using this as an example where a go fast rig is being built not a crawler.. Go fast plus a shit load of weigh generally don't mix.. That's why you see so much chromo plate and dimple dies along with tube gussets..

I don't keep up on his thread but he has been pretty much rebuilding it to go faster. Make it lighter etc.

My buddy bought some 42" stickys from him and I went and got them.

Actually I retread some of the thread, it was hit front axle truss that made me think he was super plate the heck outa everything.. But he's not really. If you look early on there are some pics of the cage with no body on it.. Shows the skeleton, really nice actually..
