I hope it doesn't get stolen when you're not looking. I wonder if you should put a lock on it somehow.

Remember to post lots of pics of your Rubicon trip so the rest of us schmucks can live vicariously through your thread.

I've thought about it, then again the truck is wide open with tube doors :dunno: I could slide a lock through one of the holes in the jack and through one of the holes in Kert's wing nut. Still might do it.....

I would. They'll steal anything they can get their hands on. If they see a lock or something that would deter them at all, they'll usually move on. I keep my high lift in my lockable toolbox but it's a real pain to get to since I have to take everything out first that's on top of it. I like where yours is mounted better for sure. Your new sliders will provide good places to jack from. In fact, the side of the truck is usually the best place to put the jack when you're hung up on something, so you can push the truck over a couple of feet if you have to.

always that 5% of dickheads around I suppose

that was a big reason why I pushed as hard as I did to get the sliders done, otherwise I would need to get creative in the event that I needed to change a tire.

I have been able to use a hi-lift to change a tire, but you have to get a ratchet strap and strap the axle to the frame so the springs can't droop out. Usually when you have a flat, you're not able to get under there to do that. Even then you have to use every inch of travel that the jack has and by the time you do that, the truck is higher than your head and things get real dangerous. Of course the ground on a trail isn't going to be anywhere near level. You can use rocks as wheel chocks and a makeshift jack stand maybe. I also carry a small bottle jack for changing tires in addition to the hi-lift. As cool as the hi-lift is, there's really only a few situations where you really need it. But when you do, it's the only thing that will work and you'll be glad to have it. You may get to use it and your winch this weekend.

Drill through the bolt, small padlock. Somebody REALLY wants it, they'll find a way, but it'll discourage the douchebag looking for a quick score.

That's another option that I thought about after seeing yours done awhile back.

I'll figure out something, thanks for the ideas :waytogo:

Has any cutting happened yet? :D

And is it just me or does that two tone body molding look WAY high?

some, I'm doing a little more today.

the trim might be a little high but it's close. Maybe your thinking of a different year/trim package.

It does make for nice photos as long as it's stays off my exhaust :D

Heading home in a few minutes to start packing up the tools and camping gear.

If anyone was following the Rubicon Trip thread then you know I had some breakage that sent me home earlier :doah:

bmxbryant9, his buddy Nick and myself made plans to run the old Rubicon trail that went through Wentworth Springs and ended at Loon lake where we would meet up with k85octane and wetoolowdingbangow for a night of camping at Loon.

Here are some pics of the run from Friday starting just after Georgetown

The famous Uncle Tom's Cabin, had to stop for a pop :D

finally on dirt

Stopped at Wentworth Springs for some lunch, met up with the RTF guys that were handing our spill kits, trail maps and other goodies. The rest of the trail was low range into Loon.

Shortly after this somewhere I was backing down a hill, passenger side drooped out and my front shaft separated. So that answers that, I need a longer slip.

this was one of the more interesting areas only because we had full size rigs. There is a video of us running down this section somewhere....

Not too long after this I felt what I thought was my front diff binding, in 2wd it was fine, in 4wd with the hubs unlocked it was still binding. Got out of truck, looked around and didn't see anything at a quick glance but I saw a fluid dripping up near the fuel pump, popped the hood to find the battery had somehow slid out of the stock battery tie-down and fell against the block :doah:. My codawag rigged up a strap on that while I looked around more. I then found a couple bolts loose on the front Driveshaft flange at the T-case. I tightened those up thinking that was the binding I was feeling but no dice. Up ahead we had a 200+ yard granite hill climb, in 2 high I couldn't get up it so bmxbryant towed me up the hill and out the remaining 300+ yards of trail to loon.

Back at camp we met up with the other guys that trailered their rigs in and I was going to pull the diff cover when I realized I couldn't even turn the front driveshaft by hand, I knew I had a major failure and would not be able to continue on so we drank beer and enjoyed the company.

Next morning we decided to fish, my co-dawg caught a 15"+ 1lb+ Rainbow and we limped the truck the 2hrs+ home.

On our way off the trail we got some death wobble so we stopped and tightened the king pins a little and carried on. I think this may have been happening on the dirt road a little the day before, bmxbryants GF was saying the ass of the truck was "twerking" :haha:

When I got home it was damn near 100 degrees out and I had 4 layers of deet and 4 layers of sunblock so after a quick shower we hit the pool with my wife and about 6 of her friends at my co-dawgs pool. I didn't even want to look at the truck, I just wanted to get drunk poolside and not think about all the fun I was missing on the trail.

On Sunday I woke up and slid the creeper under the truck to find this:

Damn T-case adapter is snapped in half causing it to drop down a couple inches and bind up the front driveline :doah:

I slid my tranny jack under the t-case to lift it back up for these pics:

I'm glad my front axle is OK but this leads me to wonder why this happened? All my mounts are poly and pretty new.

The turbo 350 is not happy so I'm thinking about pulling it for a rebuild, twin sticking the NP205 finally and in the process I need to find a remedy for this adapter breakage issue.

Nice pics! I hate you broke though. That's a bummer. It's hard to over tighten those poly mounts, so maybe they were too loose? I can't remember what t-case you're running. I've had an NP208 lock up on me like that when the planetary gear assembly broke. I couldn't get the front or the rear shaft to turn at all. I had to put the t-case in neutral and tow the truck home.

I also wonder if the front shaft's earlier misadventure may have caused some damage that led to the t-case failure. :dunno:

NP205

It almost looks like it was not tight enough (tranny/t-case mount) causing it to lean forward and then it snapped because of the leverage?

I also wonder if the front shaft's earlier misadventure may have caused some damage that led to the t-case failure. :dunno:

Possible. I was idling and barely moving when that happened. But that happened an hour or so before the next failure so I don't think that was it.

I have that same crossmember and those same poly mounts. It's really hard to tell if you've got them tight enough or not. It's like you don't want to get them too tight but...

I don't remember ever having that issue with rubber mounts.

the clamshell rubber doesn't last long with a 454 so that's why I went Poly all around.

Before it broke I was going down hill through a series of shelves that were steep enough that you would slide down them. The more I think about it, I'm leading toward the idea that the whole drivetrain was moving forward then stressing the trans mount that may or may not have been tight enough which lead it to snap in half. Maybe it's time to go with some of kerts mounts so the BBC won't move forward or back at all. I'm also assuming that the motor is able to move within those poly clamshells :dunno:

Damn son, that is some pretty serious breakage. Sucks that you have to tear back into it so soon.

Poly mounts do let the drivetrain move around a lot more. You can feel it. It looks like the case broke at the only possible place it's thin enough to crack.

Now you can take the guts and get one of those super 205 cases with double low range. I can't remember the name of them right now but they're awesome.

Did you check to see if your motor mounts are broken too?
