84 K5: The Buzzard

Took it wheeling for the first time last night! Went down to a buddy's place and rode some of his trails. Couldn't get Julie outta the passenger seat so no pics, but we ran a little creek bottom and rock garden, also tried a rocky ledge that resulted in bending the drivers side door in about 3".

You can see the dent in the door here, it's bent in about 3" at the wrinkle in the body line. Window still rolls up so no problems! Also, you can see the angle where the same tree got the mirror bracket body and all in the same swoop. Gives you an idea how steep the little ledge was.

Didn't make the ledge because the gov'lock would stop pulling with the DS rear tire when the rest of the truck started to climb. It's cool though, chicks dig body damage! :thumb:

When are you gonna :grind:and :hack: those fenders?

Even when you were tooling around the yard it looked like your tires could use some breathing room.

I dunno, they never really got into the fenders more than a couple times and even then not bad. I've been looking at the inner wheel wells and trying to figure out how to cut them to keep them intact.

Well, three weeks (or possibly more, I can't remember) since I've had time off to work on anything. Picked up a set of Warn Premiums for $70 from the local parts house. They were switching brands and cut me a deal in their last set of them in-stock. :waytogo:

Got those swapped on and replaced the bad PS tie rod end. I didn't know that K5's and K10/15's used different size tie rods. The K5 is 7/8" and the K10/15 is 1" od... Kinda surprising when you think you have the right parts and that new part just slides in and out of the tie-rod adjusting sleeve...

Took it for a ride around the local Forest Service roads up to Hale's Lake for a picnic with Julie and the girls. Drives better now! Need to lean down the primaries and richen the secondaries up some. It smells like it's quite rich going down the road, but when the secondaries open it starts "lean surging". Kinda figured on the secondary problem as I used the 305cid "tune" when I put the carb together, but the primaries being rich is odd.

Going to check out a "rust free" military tub/axles on Thursday after work. If it's in as good a shape as it looks in the pictures, I'm gonna pick it up and straighten it out for a swap in the future. That'll also mean the doors and top are coming off (possibly for good) of my current tub and the "wreckless disregard for sheet metal" shall commence! No worries when you've got a spare, right?

Well, got the mini-spool in a few weekends ago. Due to circumstances this last weekend I have still not taken it out and seen how it does. Hoping to get to play with it sometime this year....

I like this whole build.. I've got an 86 K5 that I'm still processing thoughts on. I got it for a 4WD in the winter, but you can't really just leave it the way it is... gotta make it catch some eyes when going down the road... haha. How'd you like the dupli-color bedliner? I was going to pull the carpet and get the gallon can of it and roll it in... any suggestions?

It worked ok. I'm not sure it'll hold up very long, but it was cheap enough for the time being. I'd like to find a better tub in the future after this one is mangled good.

Quick note on the Dupli-color spray on bed liner: I mounted a couple speakers I had laying around to the rear wheel wells this evening. I was using an awl to mark the spots where I wanted to drill and the bed liner is on there thicker than I thought. It took a little work to get through to the metal to make a good mark. I think with about 3 coats of this, it would be really durable as long as you didn't flex the body too much. It seemed pretty soft as well, so it may even take that ok. :waytogo:

I just finished up a 3 week stretch at work. 228hrs in 18 days. Anyways, on the way home I picked up some stuff for the K5 and also the XJ.

For the K5, Julie and I stopped at Jo Anne Fabrics and bought the duck material to recover the seats.

The green is for the actual seating surfaces and the brown will make up the sides and back of the seats. I've got to get some black embossed-welting and some 1/4" foam and I'll have what I need to start work on them.

I also got my 20mm ammo cans today I plan to use as twin tool boxes mounted in the back of the cargo area.

And I went with my buddy Matt to a junk dealer he knows and picked up some 3/16 wall 3"x4" box to make the main section of my sliders out of. Also found a neat drill press there I'm very seriously considering going back and getting, but Matt says I need to wait till we go to his other warehouse and see if there isn't something better there.

Gotta set some time aside and get some stuff done on the K5, but at the same time the XJ needs it's new t-case and rear springs installed. Someone got about 10 extra hours they could add to my weekends?!? :doah:

228hrs in 18 days really cuts into project time.

For the first 14 days of that, if I wasn't at work I was asleep. Hopefully now I'll have a little time to get something done! :waytogo: Oh, and it padded the truck fund pretty good too.

Ok, 13 days left till it takes it's first trip. We'll be trailering it this time just to make sure any of the unworked-out bugs don't leave us stranded along the interstate. A lesson learned from out first time out with Matt's F-150 trail-truck.

Today's progress: Installed 11x8" B&M Super Cooler for transmission and Hayden 4 pass tube/fin cooler for power steering fluid. Also got the transmission temperature wire run for the cooler inlet.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try to put wire looms on the spark plug wires because they look like a spider took a dump on the valve covers. Should be getting a +3 quart deep transmission pan from Summit this week and hope to install it next weekend along with the transmission temperature gauge and maybe the add-a-leafs to get rid of the blocks.

I will try to get some pics of the tubes we ran today for the coolers and a shot through the grill of the mounting and tubing. It was late and I was exhausted when we were cleaning up this evening.

Here you can see where I put the coolers. The transmission cooler is mounted on two aluminum bars bolted to the radiator support. The P/S cooler is just through mounted to the radiator.

Here is the P/S return line mounted to the radiator support. The line to the cooler from the P/S box is mounted to the same bracket, just on this side of it and slightly forward.

This is how it's mounted and routed around the P/S lines and vent lines. I had to take the factory return line and bend it up at the end because of the O-ring seal at the pump that I don't have the equipment to recreate. It uses about a 4" long section of hose to connect to new 3/8 tubing routed next to the tube I have mounted in the pictures.

I've also got my Tach and transmission temperature gauge mounted. The Summit Racing Deep Transmission pan is waiting to be installed along with a new dip-stick since the original one broke on me. Also, our camera was broken last week so we still need to replace it. I'll get more pictures of everything finished up after I get it finished.... :doah:

Thanks guys! I've done some more work to it like getting the trans pan installed, taking off the back bumper and cutting behind the wheels. Started on a rear bumper, but have not had time to finish it up or get pics of what's going on. Hopefully after we get the house bought and the few things it needs done before winter, I'll have some time to dig into this thing a little more.

Axle seals leaking on my 12b. It was hard to get the c-clips out because, I would assume, the wear on the bearings. This axle was in a truck that was used to haul wood, but I'm really guessing. After putting in my open carrier and mini-spool it started leaking. May just be bad seals. Anyways, I'm going to have it apart to replace the seals soon and I'm considering ordering a set of Superior shafts from ORD. $215+shipping but is it worth it? I've got another set of 12b shafts I need to clean up and check the bearing surfaces, but I'd like to go to 35-36" tires in the next year or so. Poll on the first page in a few. :waytogo:

What size tires?

I'd say do it if you're staying 35's and under but planning on wheeling it. Sorta in my long term plans and I'm not foreseeing going above 33's.

I use Superior axles on my rig. I am on 35's and 1/2 tons. They are advertised as being 30% stronger than the stock axles.
I broke one but I was being stoopid trying to climb a hill with too much speed, got some wheel hop and my detroit locker snapped it.
I feel I was being abusive on them.Totally operator error.
The good part was Superior honored the 1 year warranty and Summit replaced the part and also gave me a refund.
I would say heck yea use superior, they make a good product & back it up too.
